Wedding guest rules to ignore

At a wedding on Saturday with people from across the UK and across a pretty wide social spectrum in various ways. MN, I paid attention to the clothes!

Male guests wore:
Kilts, suits, blazers and chinos, tartan trousers, kurtas in a wide range of colours.

Female guests wore:
tea dresses in pastel florals, including cream and ivory, red, green, blue, black, long slinky dresses (mainly girls in late teen early twenties), all white (little girl who literally no one mistook for a bridesmaid because they were in dark navy). Both the groom’s grannies had black hats on. There were hats, fascinators, bows, and unadorned hair.

Literally no one was upset or offended by any of it, because everyone was wearing something special for a special day. The photos were a glorious cacophony of colour and no one was muttering about rules being broken, or upstaging the bride or any of the nonsense that regularly gets trotted out on here.

Groom’s mother wearing a dress that was subject of a lengthy MN thread on suitability a couple of months ago. She looked gorgeous. No one thought it was weird. It was in no way bridal or attention-grabbing.

WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE. It’ll be fine.

Precisely 💝

Which one was the grooms mums dress? In what way did people think it unsuitable?

mybeautifulemeraldparure · Yesterday 16:16

I don't understand. Everyone seemed appropriately dressed?
Why are you so angry?.

weareallqueens · Yesterday 16:30

She’s not angry. She’s merely coming on to
advise people not to overthink. Obviously some people are mad and really care about ‘rules’ but most people don’t.

Ok. Seems to annoy her unduly though. Just ignore threads that you don't like 🤷🏼

I need to know which dress the groom’s mum wore!

Not angry. But I am fed up with all the times people suggest perfectly lovely and appropriate things to wear at weddings, to be told they shouldn’t because of some rule.

Ok. Fine, I hope you had a nice time.

I hope you had a nice time, as it’s s&b what did you wear?

AgnesMcDoo · Yesterday 17:25

Sounds like a great wedding 💒

Twats with stupid rules will always be disappointed and likely divorced quite soon.

ginasevern · Yesterday 17:33

I must admit I'm tired of hearing about brides demanding colour co-ordinated weddings. This seems to be a relatively modern thing and how boring it is. Weddings used to be a glorious splash of colour and (as with the wedding the OP is describing) guests used to wear kilts, long dresses, suits, all sorts. The only faux pas would be turning up looking positively bridal or indecent.

hahabahbag · Yesterday 17:41

People can overthink things when it comes to clothes but the flip side is most people don’t want to be under or overdressed. It really helps if you know the style situation … I wore beautiful flowing midaxi length Laura Ashley dress to a wedding and felt so underdressed because everyone was in highly structured dresses straight out of the costume department of four weddings and a funeral, crazy hats included. Whereas I wore linen dress with coat jacket and people looked like they had been to Glastonbury … I do like dress guidelines nowGrin

She's obviously saying there were no rules, no themes, no specified colour, everyone wore what they wanted and it was fine. As it should be. She's not angry.

Depends on various factors - the couple’s vibe, the venue, whether there is a stated dress code etc - doesn’t it?

I’m going to a ‘black tie dress code’ wedding next month at a very high end venue, with some seriously rich folk. I can assure you nobody will be wearing pastel tea dresses or kilts!

The last wedding I went to was a laidback, ‘rock n roll’ music industry couple who had a traditional church wedding, but followed by a ‘festival’ style reception in a field with live music, food trucks etc. Quite a few women (including me) wore quite ‘safe’ smart midi dresses, but there were women in ball gowns, glitzy bodycon dresses, one in a tuxedo barely covering her bottom and towering heels, a few women in ‘festival style’ floaty mini dresses & flat sandals. It was anything goes, really.

I’ve never been to a wedding where at least some eyebrows wouldn’t have raised at somebody other than the bride wearing white, though. I still say it’s weird 😆

Wow, love the dress. Perfect for just about any wedding (but perhaps not so much for beach, forest or nudist ones.)

weebarra · Yesterday 18:05

I would definitely say kilts are black tie!

NeededANameChangeAnyway · Yesterday 18:07

@JortsNTeeShirt kilts absolutely are black tie! So long as it's the full traditional outfit with Bonnie Price Charlie jackets and not the Braveheart / flouncy top with ties nonsense!

MyManinCaracas · Yesterday 18:27

That’s a beautiful dress! I do love pink and red together.

Indeed - what an odd comment that was. Of course kilts can be black tie as can tartan trews with the right jacket.

CaptainMyCaptain · Yesterday 20:00

That's a lovely dress @bridgetreilly

Traypaint · Yesterday 20:22

Just because you didn't hear it doesn't mean no one was muttering and if the bride was too polite to say she was upset, that doesn't mean she wasn't upset.

I mean I'm sure you're right, none of this stuff matters, but you can't know that those most involved in this wedding didn't have the same "feelings" as some of the wedding posters on here.
