Wedding guest rules to ignore

At a wedding on Saturday with people from across the UK and across a pretty wide social spectrum in various ways. MN, I paid attention to the clothes!

Male guests wore:
Kilts, suits, blazers and chinos, tartan trousers, kurtas in a wide range of colours.

Female guests wore:
tea dresses in pastel florals, including cream and ivory, red, green, blue, black, long slinky dresses (mainly girls in late teen early twenties), all white (little girl who literally no one mistook for a bridesmaid because they were in dark navy). Both the groom’s grannies had black hats on. There were hats, fascinators, bows, and unadorned hair.

Literally no one was upset or offended by any of it, because everyone was wearing something special for a special day. The photos were a glorious cacophony of colour and no one was muttering about rules being broken, or upstaging the bride or any of the nonsense that regularly gets trotted out on here.

Groom’s mother wearing a dress that was subject of a lengthy MN thread on suitability a couple of months ago. She looked gorgeous. No one thought it was weird. It was in no way bridal or attention-grabbing.

WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE. It’ll be fine.

I've never been to a wedding with a colour code. So rude - you are basically demanding your guests go out and buy somethinng new even if they have something perfectly suitable in their wardrobe. How wasteful and selfish.

As far as I'm concerned, the only "rule" for women is no completely white or cream outfits.

Red (you've shagged the groom) or green (unlucky) are fine. Nobody's going to think you're at a funeral if you wear black. A dress which is a colour with 50% white/cream pattern is fine. You don't have to wear a hat or anything in your hair, but if you want to, that's fine. If you're a bloke, no jeans or shorts.

@grilledcheesefromthesims3 I do on wedding threads as she’s been to a lot. If posters say they have not been to one for 10 years, someone who has been to many can helpfully fill the gaps? I also do have incredibly stylish DDs but one has been to way more weddings than the other. I also think if you are in London and regularly mixing with stylish people, you maybe have a decent take on style? I’m in the country but I do know what stylish looks like - and it should definitely be tailored to the specific event.

I agree that colour coded is a step too far though and it’s a bit naff these days to have pictures including vast numbers of guests! How dull that they would all look the same!

I see a lot of threads where people say they have no interest in fashion and everyone should just wear what they want. I think if someone starts a thread asking for an opinion, it’s reasonable to give one backed up by knowledge and recent info. I agree type of wedding is paramount but opinions are presumably welcomed or these threads would be pointless.

Thank you for posting that sound like a perfectly normal wedding to me . I was beginning to think they didn't exist anymore because of all the posts with the so called 'wedding rules"
