I don’t wear any…….

  1. Black. Ever. Feel like I’ve time travelled to being a waitress 40 years ago, which I hated.
  1. Cold shoulder or no shoulder tops. My frame is tiny, literally 13 inches across the shoulder - still look like a shot putter.
  1. Co - ords. Fabulous on everyone else, pyjamas on me.
  1. Shorts. Tried every style but basically my legs are the least attractive part of my body so every time I put shorts on I see too much leg and feel self conscious.
  1. Knee length dresses. Same reason as shorts, cankles, wobbly calves. Yeurgh.
  1. Polyester. Unless there’s some in the gym leggings and I only wear them for an hour. It’s just too warm in London for poly.

you ? (Excuse numbering, on stupid phone if you put in spaces it then gets rid of numbers 🤦‍♀️)

Ha, agree with all your list except black, which as a pale Welsh (assisted)redhead suits me well. And I look fab in a mini skirt so why don’t shorts work? A mystery.

I will add:

Angel sleeves / flutter sleeves. Instantly ages me and gives cruise ship vibes. Especially when chiffon.

Pink. There is no tone, from ballet slippers to fuschia, that doesn’t make me look yellow.

Drop waists. I’m a tall, slim size 12. Drop waists = instant pregnancy bump. I’m 54 🤣

Dresses with attached tie belts. Never sit in the right place for my actual waistline. Never look right whether tied front or back.

Heels. Makeup

localnotail · 07/08/2026 08:02

I wear predominantly black, also like dark blue, yellow, brown and green. Dont wear:

anything with dots or stripes
flowery patterns
frills
whimsical clothes
garish colours - I really dislike Oliver Bonas, it basically represents everything I would never wear ))

also:

short skirts
anything fitted
sleeveless tops
high heels

I have a good figure so these are simply taste related.

PinkCactusPink · 07/08/2026 08:03
  • anything with a sleeve shorter than elbow length (even in Summer!) I have disproportionately fat upper arms where the fat literally hangs over my elbow and it looks disgusting. Makes my wardrobe very limited.
  • yellow, orange, pink, red. I'm a pale red head and these colours are not for me!
  • shorts. Horrible, pasty legs that don't fake tan or real tan. And now varicose veins on my thighs 😢

Basically if I could change everything about the way I look I would 🤣

BrokenBiscuitss · 07/08/2026 08:05

Trousers: i wear jeans, joggers and skirts but never met a pair of trousers I like
Jumpsuits: same reason
Lipstick: either comes off after 5 min or is the horrible long lasting kind that makes my lips look parched
Cardigans: annoying

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/08/2026 08:14

Wool
Leather
Suede
Silk
Feather
Down

I will wear pretty much any colour but not a fan of turquoise and never mustard or chartreuse ,
Tiers on skirts or dresses
Wide legged trousers
Heels

Botox - apart from the ethics , I don;t need to look "fresh" , I'm not a bloody lettuce

Myblueclematis · 07/08/2026 08:17

Yellow or orange, I'd look as if I needed an ambulance it makes my skin look so awful.

Brown, I just don't like it enough to buy anything in that colour.

Below the knee dresses, I'm 5'4" size 14, big boobs and it makes me look really dumpy, was horrified at the photos when attending a wedding. Have to be knee length if I ever have to wear a dress again. 😫

SunwaysSystems · 07/08/2026 08:19

I don't do shorts - in hot weather I prefer flowy skirts - much more comfortable for me.
Lipstick - never really looks good on me. I found my ideal lipstick/balm thing and it was immediately discontinued Sad

Any top with a large/ deep scoop neck. Looks weird on me.

Agree re polyester.

In fact, most clothes available in the shops I would find uncomfortable or would look incredibly unflattering on me.

I don't know if i have an unusual body shape or colouring, but there are a handful of styles I wear and anything else looks awful, so I'm stuck with them.

I'm slim with a flabby tummy so anything tight around the waist is no good.

SpiralSister · 07/08/2026 08:19

Lipstick. The feel of it! Vile.

Viperregency · 07/08/2026 08:19

I don’t wear black or knee length skirts, or cold shoulder tops.
I will wear polyester blends, absolutely, as it comes in different qualities but from higher end brands
happy to wear shorts but not mini skirts, I’m in my 5os and i just feel it’s a bit young looking, which isn’t to say anyone else can’t and don’t look fab,
I tend not to wear co ords but have a gorgeous set from me and em I wear. The lower brand quality ones do often look like pyjamas.
i don’t wear skinny jeans any more
i wont wear dungarees,
I don’t wear yellow, bright blue or purple either, I dislike the colours, in clothes,
I also don’t like pastels, like mint green
I don’t like cullottes, jorts, or polka dots
I don’t like sliders with socks.
I won’t wear leggings out of the gym, or even gym gear out of the gym,
I don’t like busy patterns or anything too loud.
i abhor patterned trousers.

i tend to be in a sleeveless midi dresses right now, I like a fit and flare shape, when it’s cooler I tend to wear wide leg trousers and a fitted top, usually sleeveless, in winter slouchy jumpers, usually cashmere or a high quality wool blend.

i like pale colours, which are not pastels, so look best in creams, tans, dusty pink , seafoam etc and olive, navy,

Owly11 · 07/08/2026 08:23

My list is so long it would be quicker to list what I do wear 😂😂

Doodledoggle · 07/08/2026 08:25

Ohhh good thread!

Belts. Invented by men. Never don't get stomach ache if I wear a belt. Also any other form of clothing that presses on my lower stomach. Pain.

Midi and maxi dresses. Instant frump on me. In fact I've stopped wearing dresses unless cotton voluminous mini dresses on a hot day.

I don't wear jackets any more. Coats yes but no blazers or denim jackets. I've been on mumsnet since 2008 and a soft grey boden blazer with a big scarf screams style and beauty 2010 to me, I've never pulled it off since!

Also see cardigans. I owned many gap chunky cardigans in the late 2000s. Never going back!

Obvs cold shoulder tops. Who the feck does look good in those?

dudsville · 07/08/2026 08:28

Low cut or v neck tops. I have always had dry skin and I'm a side sleeper. My cleavage is the only major wrinkly part of my body at mid 50s.

Overly fitted clothes. Several years back I suddenly started to feel really bound up in my clothes. Now everything is wonderfully loose. I can see I'm becoming the lentil weaving, hemp clad crone of dystopian films. Younger me would have shrieked, now I just cackle happily.

Black ankle boots with black trousers make me look lije a Star Trek wannabe.

A crisp white shirt, as above, makes me look like staff.

Handbags. In recent years they seem so fussy, can't stand them. My nice bags are in storage in case I come back around.

MagpiePi · 07/08/2026 08:29

Beige, heels, make up, a bra, unless I am going out in public although I don’t bother in the winter if I’m going to be all layered up.

I really don’t ‘get’ fashion and stick to jeans, t shirts and hoodies type stuff. I’ll put on a dress or skirt for a special occasion but otherwise cba.

Velvera · 07/08/2026 08:31

I don't wear flappy wide leg trousers,clompy sandals,any sort of heels,dungarees,maxi dresses,short boxy tops.

Sealswimmer · 07/08/2026 08:31

Skirts
Fur
Frills
Dresses
Heels
Acrylic knitwear
Anything uncomfortable

BarbarianBabs · 07/08/2026 08:38

I never wear white (don’t trust myself not to spill things on myself!)

never wear lipstick, foundation or most other make up. I tend to just do a good moisturiser, with occasionally mascara and eyeliner. I never experimented much with makeup up in my teens so not really sure how to use it anyway!

never wear pencil skirts/dresses. I don’t like the restricted feeling they give when I walk but I also am pear shaped so don’t like how they over exaggerate the size of my bum

Morethanadecade · 07/08/2026 08:42

I never wear T-shirts. Shirts and blouses are much nicer.

Smittenkitchen · 07/08/2026 08:44

Black, drop-waisted dresses, pale beiges - totally wash me out.
Figured out in recent years that lots of busy patterns don't work on me, block colours best.
Converse, white trainers.
Boxy-fit t-shirts, did try this but it's really not great on me.
Certainly shoulder pads or anything at all square or bulky at the shoulders.
Cool colours post colour analysis.

MsRubee · 07/08/2026 08:45

Separates, I seem to have a very long back and short legs !

borntobequiet · 07/08/2026 08:53

Crew neck anything. Unflattering and uncomfortable for me. Shops are full of them, unfortunately.

SchnitzelAgain · 07/08/2026 08:54

Leggings
Cold shoulder tops
Crocs

Gettingbysomehow · 07/08/2026 09:16

I look fabulous in black but I have a white cat so I look like a yeti within 5 .minutes of sitting down. The cat hair in the atmosphere seems to be magnetically attracted to my clothing 😐

Dropped waist dresses. I look like some kind of kitchen maid in the 1920s.

Breton T shirts. I have three and look awful in all of them.

I love blazers and have tried so many. I have yet to find one I look good in.

Crew necks. They make me look like a scrawny old woman.

honeylulu · 07/08/2026 09:17

I wont say never but I rarely choose/ wear colourful or patterned clothes. Unlike the OP I'm a huge fan of black and feel "unsafe" and weird in colours. The colour that looks worst on me is coral (orangey pink). I like the look of it - in fact my bedroom is painted this colour - but it does not suit me At All.

Also white trainers. I think they look awful, make legs look like golf clubs and they are grubby within a few days. What are you supposed to do? Buy new ones all the time?

Bobble hats - make adults look like giant toddlers.

Dungarees - same.

Puffer coats - look like hot water tank covers.

Polo necks - feel like I'm being strangled.

Morepositivemum · 07/08/2026 09:23

Anything with no sleeves- my upper arms were always the oddest shape!

three quarter length sleeves as I get irrationallly angry and want to pull them down😅

three quarter length trousers as my ankles are not good!!

short dresses (see sleeves comment😅)

bodycon dresses as if have everyone asking me my due date

Love black but colours too (but weirdly after years of no white im starting to love it even though I don’t think it should be ‘for’ me (I always think of it as for being for very sophisticated types!). Love scarves and bobble hats (saw them mentioned above) and boat neck tops and big jumpers and cords and trousers that cover your shoes!

honeylulu

same with polo necks, they strangle me plus they weirdly give me a cold
