Does this outfit work?

Is this outfit too baggy and shapeless? No special occasion, just heading out to meet someone for coffee and a browse in a garden centre but have some time before I leave and interested in opinions.
I’ve lost weight recently and so am a bit aimless about clothes just now

I like the outfit overall but hate the trainers

I agree, I think both the trainers and the trousers need to go to be honest.

I agree with the need to shorten the jeans. I can't quite tell, but I think they might then really suit you in the way that barrel or loose fit trousers for nowadays, and it's my preferred shape. I don't think they suit being rolled up because there's already a lot of fabric going on.

I'm completely off bags at the moment. Cross body are so useful and practical, but I think both of them get in the way of the outfit.

Lovely top!

YouSawBrigadoon · 06/08/2026 16:38

I think it’s fine. Trousers are slightly wearing you, but nice nonetheless.

dudsville · 06/08/2026 16:39

I think the footwear could be reconsidered after the jeans are shortened, both options would look better in that context.

I think you look great. I hate the top personally because its mumsy and frumpy but thats my taste. As an outfit and you, you look elegant and smart. But you have lost weight, you dont need fleurdy Boho mum shirts, try a nice fitted black t shirt, TH do a lovely one that is slightly longer length and fitted but heavy cotton which helps make it feel less revealing.

You think she looks great but the top is mumsy and frumpy 🤐

Savvysix1984 · 06/08/2026 16:53

I like the top but I feel the jeans are too big and too long.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/08/2026 16:57

Jeans are too long and I think a paler bag would complement the colours in the rest of the outfit. Definitely better with the small bag.
top looks good on you.

cantsleepneedsleep · 06/08/2026 17:00

I like the top but agree it’s knees down that is the issue. The turn ups and trainers.

OvernightBloats · 06/08/2026 17:02

Really like the top. The trousers don't fit well - too baggy.

outerspacepotato · 06/08/2026 17:19

For what you're planning, it's fine. Think about getting rid of those jeans though, your weight loss has affected the fit and they're too long. I'd be carrying a beige bag, but it's a very casual day out. You look comfortable.

The top is nice and loose and the colours look flattering on you.

Twodogsonthecouch · 06/08/2026 16:35

I think you might mean that in you opinion it’s mumsy and frumpy @Jerrybalanitis 😂.
To be fair to the top I think it might be me that, at 60 years of age and a mother of 4, is mumsy and frumpy, not the top which on someone younger, taller and slimmer would look a lot better

No i hate it because of what it is. You are elegant and it looks ok on ypu, I just think you have lost weight and your brain hasn't caught up. You remind me of Mary Portas. I just dont know why womens clothes are designed to drown in fabric and in colour. We aren't the flake woman from 1982 ffs

SchnitzelAgain · 06/08/2026 18:24

Great top, workable trousers if you were wearing brown sandals.

Some of us might aspire to look like a Flake ad woman ... especially the 70s ones!!

I think you're applying your own personal dislikes wholesale to "women" and the fact that we are allowed to have varying tastes. Some of us like loose colourful boho clothes; some of us like fitted black clothes. Some of us might even like both!!!

Fashion designers aren't all plotting together to only design flowery tent frocks, you know!

Ohyeahohno · 06/08/2026 18:38

The overall effect is nice but the trousers are too creased.

Marroon · 06/08/2026 18:42

The top is fine imo, it’s nice to wear colour and pattern and not obsess over everything being bland and neutral.
Next time try ironed wide leg white jeans with sandals or flats, or more of a cropped tapered jean with sandals. It would balance out the flowy top imo.

Inmyuggs · 06/08/2026 18:57

The rolled jeans No!

The sneakers...no.
Like the top & nothing wrong with mumsie looks.
Who the hell irons nowdays.

TheChosenTwo · 06/08/2026 19:00

I think your revised look with the smaller bag was better and yes, I agree that the jeans and trainers maybe need to go - or get the jeans taken up.
I lost a lot of weight and have taken ages to figure out what clothes I actually like versus what clothes I can buy just because they fit.
i don’t go for this ‘flattering’ business because it seems to mean accentuating specific areas of the body whereas I just want to go out looking respectable, covered and not with clothes clinging to bits of me! I wear what I feel comfortable in and most of the time it’s quite oversized and boxy.

Pineapplesonpizza · 06/08/2026 19:01

I think you look great and nothing wrong with the trousers - they look useful. The trainers are a NO though, so next time go for sandals or flats.

EmmaB1309 · 06/08/2026 19:04

It’s ok. The top would go better with bootcut jeans I think.

Petrine · 06/08/2026 19:25

I think the top looks ok but the jeans don’t fit and are far too long and crumpled.

DaisyChain505 · 06/08/2026 19:36

Love the top, well done on the weight loss.

IwanttoWFH · 06/08/2026 19:37

I think a looser top calls for more fitted trousers. Loose trousers need a tighter fitting top - it’s all about balance and proportion.
The trainers are too chunky and casual with the top. A pair of slimmer trainers (such as converse or Adidas Sambas) would be better.
If you’re wearing loose trousers, they should just skim the bottom of your shoe and not be bunched up.

The bag is too dark for the outfit, too. Have you heard of “sandwiching”? It suggests pairing the same colour top and shoes to create a “put together” look and then tying in your accessories.

Have a look on Instagram. Lots of style inspiration on there.

Cucurella · 06/08/2026 19:41

The top is gorgeous. Agree with others that the trousers would look better shorter and teamed with some flat sandals or different trainers but you look great and I hope you had a lovely time.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/08/2026 19:42

Trousers rolled down to cover the majority of the trainers (if you can't replace them with something more converse style), brown bag on the shoulder rather than cutting across you and the fluid fabric, tuck the shirt in more round the side to reduce the illusion of bulk and it's fine.

Overthinking22 · 06/08/2026 19:50

Belt might help?

looks lovely either way
