Are you a trouser/jeans or a skirt/dress person?

I'm interested in this in a kind of 'statistics' sense. I see a lot of dresses and skirts in stores and online, but not many people wearing them in real life. Even in work related situations, across the board, I see women and girls mostly wearing trousers or jeans.

Might be location specific, I live in a very boring, unpretentious, not very fashion forward area, so it could be skewing things a bit; but I do travel about quite a lot and still maintain that year-round most women are in trousers/jeans.

I will admit that I used to love a well made breezy skirt with a flat waistband and minimal top but I live mostly in straight jeans these days. It is so hard to find that style now amongst the paperbag elastic styles or structural artisanal stuff.

So I am curious, are you mostly in trousers/jeans or skirts/dresses?

I wear 50:50 trousers and dresses. I wear a lot of Issey Miyake Pleats Please so practical but still stylish.

I rarely wear skirts or jeans. I think I’ve worn jeans maybe 3 times this year, and can’t remember when I last wore a skirt (2021 maybe, just after lockdown was first lifted).

I’ve climbed ladders to cut trees/bushes in a dress (and gold sandals) as well as put up garden fencing. I just spent a week off grid up past the Arctic Circle and my boyfriend was very «do not bring a dress». I still brought one, and yes I did wear it.

Dont possess a skirt or dress

Generally, in summer dresses and skirts, sometimes short shorts. Trousers in winter for day to day wear. If I’m going out it will usually be a dress.

I’m a dress person. Only wear dresses… skirts on the odd occasion. I only used to wear jeans or leggings once in a while during winter so that I didn’t look the odd one out when I used to do the school run and every mum at the school gates were dressed in the usual jeans/ trainers/ joggers/ sweaters/ hoodies stuff.

Joggers, usually. They are so comfortable. I have a few summer dresses for hot days. I probably need some more.

I surprised myself this summer by deciding on voluminous maxi skirts. I'm pretty sure I'll wear them through the winter, layered. It's all rather dramatic. I want a generously flared wool maxi for the cold weather, but I'll probably have to make it if the desire doesn't go away.

I've worn trousers and jeans almost exclusively since wide legs came back; before that, it was leggings with long tops. Dresses are definitely the most convenient garment, though. I've always had a handful of loose or stretch dresses that can just be pulled on for virtually any purpose.

I love that fashion's so non-prescriptive these days! Even here in the backwaters, there's a tremendous variety of styles among the sea of the dad jeans with stretch tops.

Both. I’m going into the office today and I’ll be wearing a dress, but last week it was wide legged trousers. I definitely don’t stick to one or the other.

See, I like this in principle but it'd make me look like your nan's curtains draped over a shed!

I am trying to decide whether to choose skirts or trousers

But why? Does anyone really have to make a decisive choice.

I like brands that care about design and craft - and that set fashion rather than following it - and I find it’s just as easy to buy and wear beautiful, interesting, well made skirts as it is trousers. I don’t shop with the aim of buying woefully unfashionable clothes (though once I have things I wear them for years).

I wondered if your feeling of having to make a choice is based on the proportions of the clothes and footwear you’d wear with either - but right now the tops, jackets and shoes I’m seeing work with both skirts and trousers.

(I’m not mentioning brands because I’m doing a ‘waiting for the very end of the sale’ dance and don’t want the bargains I have my eye on grabbed from under my nose!)

95% jeans. I haven't even owned a skirt for more than 20 years. I do like dresses, though, both winter and summer.

Jeans trousers for sure.
I only wear dresses in hot weather to keep cool.
Skirts never really feel comfortable. Im always fiddling with the waistbands which are always too big.

Trousers for work and dresses in my own time.

Everything but jeans for me. A mix of Leggings, Trousers with a fitted/stretchy waists, Skirts and Dresses(A line). Jeans dont fit properly or are uncomfortable and unflattering on my pear shape.

It has more to do with a career change after 25 years, and moving to a new part of the UK. From a very outdoorsy, rainy, windy place to a very settled, softer environment. Will probably be working in academia/museum environment and am a bit out of my depth without my Patagonia and Fjallraven. I hardly ever buy new clothes so it does feel like a turning point for me to assess what I have.

And...I just love the subject, and am nosey.

I'm a separates person: trousers, jeans or skirts. I can ring the changes far more than I can with a dress, which I always get bored with after a while no matter how nice it is. Also with separates you double your chances of finding a good fit.

At the moment, I'm mostly into trousers and jeans because I'm enjoying the variety of shapes after all those years of death-by-skinnies. (I don't even inherently dislike skinnies, I just got fed up of their stranglehold over the high street.) If that changes, I'll wear more skirts again.

Dresses and wide leg trousers for work.

Shorts or jeans outside work, depending on season. I have lots of dresses, but always default to shorts as soon as it gets warm.

This summer, I’ve lived in dresses, apart from dog walking, and loved it. I do have linen trousers as well. Winter, it’s jeans and a jumper. Work is seasonal - more black trousers in winter, and a mixture in the summer. I have got a few skirts, but prefer a dress (and quite a few, but I do wear them).

Currently i have a skirt with matching waist length top. It looks like a dress but its two separate items.
I have dresses for nearly every occasion.
In winter I like long heavy flannel or cord skirts with chunky boots and cardigans or sweatshirts but I have loads of winter dresses to go with my collection of Lanx boots!

At work in in shorts and t shirts in summer unless Im going to a meeting, then I'll put a dress on.

Depends on the weather, dresses (and occasionally skirts) most of the time when it's warm enough for bare legs and sandals, but trousers / jeans the rest of the year, I hate tights.

Only dresses. I haven't worn any kind of trousers for over a decade.

Oh - that does sound an exciting change, @AthenaPashmina. And no, I wouldn’t want to be wafting around the Ashmolean or the Fitzwilliam (or wherever) in yomping gear.

I still maintain you don’t have to choose between skirts and trousers. And you’ll no doubt want to experiment with new silhouettes.

I have a sort of division in my life. I wear only trousers to work. I keep a fairly strict work wardrobe - as i replace nice blouses / shirts i downgrade the former best ones for work. I would hate to wear a beautifil blouse to a team meeting & then the same blouse out for dinner etc

In work i wear tailored trousers of varying styles & lengths - lots of black, navy, grey etc

However i adore beautiful dresses for going out with dh or friends & ihave loads from sezane, ba&sh, me+em etc

I also have non-work trousers that i wear outside work

I have 1 beautiful skirt & i'm planning buying another

I love the fact that my work colleagues don't have a clue how i really dress!

I didn't wear jeans since 2020 as grew unbearably sick of skinnies (still am) but this year i' ve bought 3 pairs - 2 barrel leg (one plain midrinse & the other patterned) + a fab pair of indigo straight leg. I am enjoying wearing them.

I do not own shorts nor will i ever!

I worked at home for 25 years and am done with that for good! I can't wait to get out and about more and find new ways to wear stuff. I am drawn to that idea, too - keeping a separate, small collection of items for work and then having fun with the rest. It's sounds like a great idea and would cut out a great deal of 'decision fatigue' generally. If I am able to wear jeans in work, I will probably take the Steve Jobs simplicity route!
