Are you a trouser/jeans or a skirt/dress person?

I'm interested in this in a kind of 'statistics' sense. I see a lot of dresses and skirts in stores and online, but not many people wearing them in real life. Even in work related situations, across the board, I see women and girls mostly wearing trousers or jeans.

Might be location specific, I live in a very boring, unpretentious, not very fashion forward area, so it could be skewing things a bit; but I do travel about quite a lot and still maintain that year-round most women are in trousers/jeans.

I will admit that I used to love a well made breezy skirt with a flat waistband and minimal top but I live mostly in straight jeans these days. It is so hard to find that style now amongst the paperbag elastic styles or structural artisanal stuff.

So I am curious, are you mostly in trousers/jeans or skirts/dresses?

I was thinking about this the other day as Ive made a new local friend and I realised she only wears dresses. And how weird (for me) it would be to have a wardrobe of all dresses. I love it for her though, I do think it is a signature style. As for me, I do have a small number of skirts and dresses but id say I'm 90% trousers or shorts. I do have some very wide trousers and love culottes, so they have a skirt vibe to them, but aren't actually skirts. I think I feel too dressed up in a dress for everyday wear...so I default to separates.

I can never find dresses that I like but to tell the truth they are so easy to just chuck on and go. I like that idea very much! Simplification!

Er, all of the above? On work days it's maybe 60% trousers or jeans, 30% skirts, 10% dresses. On weekends mainly jeans.

It has changed, with different jobs and different commutes.

Also different body shape.

Even now it varies with the weather. I'm a skirt / dress person when it is hot or at least warm enough to have sandal / bare feet, but a jeans kind of a person when it gets colder and I want to wear socks and boots or trainers / walking shoes.

Work - dresses/skirts 90% of the time
Casual weekend/WFH - trousers/jeans 90% of the time
Going out - dresses/skirts/culottes

Im v petite and also wore dressers, skirts & tops with the odd trousers. I put weight on with health conditions & started wearing jeans. After 10 years I’m finally loosing the weight & im back into my old style & feel so much better being back in my style of clothing. Ill still wear jeans in winter when I walk the dog.

Well I am glad to see so much diversity! It must be my town then. I recall a spate of prairie dresses during the pandemic but it's all gone back to jeans here now. I would like a new dress...i only have 2 and they are ooooold.

I always wear trousers and a top in natural fibres, usually Toast. I don’t really like jeans but do sometimes wear them.

I also own but never wear a fabulous collection of very expensive dresses always described on here as ‘tents’ or ‘Grayson Perry’ because I love them and just collecting them is a genuine hobby for me. I’m 55 now and have lived this way since I was about 30 and earning enough money to indulge my passion for big frocks. I earned that money through being a professional dressmaker so I think that does explain it!

Dresses mostly. Sometimes leggings/trousers. I do have jeans that I wear occasionally and I wear skirts in winter but not in summer.

Nothing wrong with that! I spend on books and tech so no judgement here! I do love to get a few nice things from Poetry each year but am not very fashion-forward. That's about it for for me. I am off to google Grayson perry dresses now...

Dresses and skirts mainly, summer and winter. Definitely not jeans, I find them uncomfortable. I quite like palazzo trousers occasionally though.

Both, dresses and skirts in the summer when it’s actually warm enough to have bare legs but also happy wearing them in winter with tights. Loose floaty trousers with tops or jeans with thermals underneath, I mean I literally have no ‘style’ - I just wear what I fancy on the day.

I was told this was Grayson Perry. In reality it's gorgeous, gets lots of compliments and in its 4th summer.

Skirts and dresses.

I own one pair of jeans but never wear them because I weirdly expand throughout the day and they become too tight by the time my shift has finished.

Around the house I mostly wear pyjama shorts.

I wear trousers at work (kitchen) but never otherwise. Skirts and dresses only. I hate wearing trousers and jeans.

According to a google search over 95% of British women prefer trousers/jeans. With ages 11-29 opting for them the most. Fascinating stuff! It says much of this was driven by the rise of smart-casual for work, but I am not convinced. Not everyone i the uk works in an office.

What did amuse me is that the highest take-up of denim was in Scotland and the higher north of England. Aside from these bizarre heatwaves and long summers, I am not at all surprised (I am northern!).

I wear them all, lots of dresses and trousers and jeans. I have 4 skirts but they somehow feel more of a fancy dress item even though all my clothing falls into the "smart casual" style.

Dresses during spring and summer, but in autumn winter its jeans and trousers. Just as they are warmer and I don’t do tights. Dresses don’t look the same wirh socks as they do wirh bare legs/feet/sandals and a bit of a tan.

i never used to wear dresses, but as I lost weight,and am quite tall, well just under five foot 7 and a size 8. With a narrow frame,short body and long legs, midi dresses work very well on me.

Always sleeveless , close fitting in the body and I quite like ones with a floaty swishy skirt part, and I wear one most days at the moment. I suspect I often look like a middle aged fairy or ballerina.😂

This sounds lovely though and it's sad we have come to see it as 'dressed up'. I think no matter how individual or original we think we are we still tend go with the majority.

But I don't do floaty or long clothing so all my skirts/dresses are short, hard wearing, and worn with leggings rather than tights/bare legs.

And you'd never say my everyday outfits were "fancy". I am often to be found in a denim mini skirt, ratty old jumper, and wellies 😂 I just absolutely hate trousers and how they feel, and genuinely find skirts and dresses more comfortable and practical.
