Weird intimidating stares - what is it with clothes models about to duff you up behind the bike sheds (or worse)?

Collective marketing depts must have decided 'DIRTY LOOKS SELL CLOTHES'.

It's just so odd. Hush models are frankly terrifying. M&S has a hefty sprinkle of 'ard. Many of the Seasalt models look like you just pissed on their chips. Mint Velvet, cross. H&M, thoroughly pissed off. Even the White Stuff models look rather disappointed in you.

AIBU?

100% know what you mean. I guess they might be hungry?

BeanQuisine · 26/06/2026 16:00

"Ugly sells", is their new mantra. And it's just as laughable as all their other mantras.

Vaguelyclassical · 26/06/2026 16:27

'Twas ever so! This old lady remembers the Hard Girl Stares from her 70's fashion magazines, and if you look at a 50's Vogue, quite a few of the models, if not exactly about to beat you up, are certainly enacting disdain and superiority with ever fibre of their being!

MixedFeelingsNoFeelings · 26/06/2026 16:43

Here comes the bride, whoop-de-doo.

This one is doing the passive-aggressive "are you OK, Hun?" complete with the head-tilt. Riverboat Cardigan - Seasalt Cornwall

Probably because they've made her wear that horrific cardigan Grin

ALittleSoiree · 26/06/2026 17:12

This Jaegar model was promised a photoshoot by the sea. She in not impressed with the location.

Definitely agree but don’t blame the models- my son is a model and it’s not their choice to do these moody looks! This is what they’re told to do and the images that the client picks. From the model’s point of view just looking normal or smiling is a lot easier than trying to look moody and mysterious while standing in a field and simultaneously trying to make it clear what your shirt looks like 😂 As pp says, looking friendly and pleasant is associated with lower end/catalogue clothing and looking pissed off or like a zombie reads as high end.

Doesn't really work if everyone's doing it though, presumably people don't think H&M must be luxury now as they have glowering models. Maybe high end designers need to start having them grinning and waving, to prevent any confusion!

user67584329 · 26/06/2026 17:33

Has anyone else noticed that other than landing pages, jewellery and sunglasses, Net-a-Porter and Mytheresa never show model's faces much above the mouth?

There must surely has to be some ground between haughty disdain and... menacing though?? 😬😂

Was it you who inflated her shirt perhaps?

Phase Eight models are seriously naffed off. They are giving off ‘Oh, great! Another bloody wedding’ vibes. 😀

I was going to write exactly the same thing. I find it really off-putting to be scowled at aggressively by the models. Why do companies think this will prompt sales of their clothes?

I also don't get the M&S poses in the lingerie section. Legs wide apart, or sitting with trousers unzipped and open whilst reclining, again with legs akimbo, when modelling bras. It looks suggestive to say the least and I find it distasteful.

Also on the bra subject - why put a jacket on the model who's showing a bra to the extent that you can't see the item other than a glimpse of it at the front?

Lastly...

Models who stand absolutely straight, arms by the side, staring blankly - Toast often do this as does Ghost. You might as well take photos of the garments on hangers.

Yes, the anatomically neutral pose and blank face verging on a scowl 😄

Newsenmum · 26/06/2026 19:09

What I can’t understand is why the zara models do these hideous awful poses.

She looks like a mum at the school gate who's just realised the others have been out without her.

Pistachiocake · 26/06/2026 20:29

As a kid, the first time I saw an older relative looking at a clothes catalogue, I was surprised the models looked grumpy-why wouldn't they be smiling? In my tiny kids mind, I decided they must think the clothes didn't fit them very well, because I'd seen relatives upset when the clothes arrived if they didn't think them a good fit!
Now I'd probably be told off for thinking women should be smiling.

Went on Seasalt to see what you were talking about and saw one friendly face. Then I realised it was not a professional model so he has not seen the act all hard memo.

What makes you think he’s not a professional model?? I’m used to be a commercial model. Just because he doesn’t look ‘hunky’ doesn’t mean he’s not a model. I imagine places like seasalt will select their models from professional commercial modelling agencies. If you look at commercial modelling agencies that represent mature models you will see there is a variety of different looks that aren’t your typical chiseleled cheek boned, 19 year old hunk. It’s a bit ignorant to say he’s not a professional model when he will most likely have been selected from a professional modelling agency and would not have done this job for free! He will have been paid!
And if you research into commercial modelling (which is a different kettle of fish to high fashion modelling) you will see that most of them don’t have the “stare” you are talking about. They have more of a ‘friendly’ look about them! Because it’s a different market to Chanel, Gucci and the likes!

Oh, this has really amused me! 😹😹😹

What annoys me is that a company pays a photographer to take photos of garments on models for their online shop and also big photos shown in store.
Most of the time you can’t see the item eg a dress as the model isn’t standing up straight - the photographer had ONE JOB 🙄
Another thing - the colour matching of the actual garment to the photographs in store is so off 🙄🙄
I’m looking at you in particular M&S
It’s sh*t

As an ex model of 25 years, albeit embarrassing for you, I’m glad you found it amusing considering you seem to know little about the industry 🤣

I just know who he is and I think he’d be amused too, that’s all. If a little peeved. He did also used to model way back!

Yeah okay! If you say so 🤣
However he will have been paid so to claim he isn’t a professional model is hilarious in itself. He’s literally modelling 😊
Maybe you should research commercial modelling and you will see that certain brands use a certain type of ‘friendly’ aesthetic! Not all hard stares. Again embarrassing for you!
