Weird intimidating stares - what is it with clothes models about to duff you up behind the bike sheds (or worse)?

Collective marketing depts must have decided 'DIRTY LOOKS SELL CLOTHES'.

It's just so odd. Hush models are frankly terrifying. M&S has a hefty sprinkle of 'ard. Many of the Seasalt models look like you just pissed on their chips. Mint Velvet, cross. H&M, thoroughly pissed off. Even the White Stuff models look rather disappointed in you.

AIBU?

@Flyingintotheunknown people/posters are allowed to think these "poses" look a bit silly and have a laugh about it, fine it isn't your sense of humour but it isn't as deep as you think.

I wasn’t thinking it was “deep” apart from certain people taking the piss out of models that don’t eat cake or stereotype all healthy looking models to make it sound like they all have eating disorders, not realising that eating disorders within the fashion industry is rife due to them being bullied into it. Not so much for the commercial modelling industry however.

What I do find amusing is some people seem to have an issue with certain things I’ve said when it isn’t that deep either.

ALittleSoiree · 27/06/2026 09:24

Back to the subject 😀. This advert is giving me ‘Annoy me once more and you’ll end up in a suitcase’ vibes.
Very arty though.

If you really want to see the serial killer vibe, have a look at Cos.

Moonlightdust · 27/06/2026 09:31

I think it’s more reflective on today’s image - it’s obviously the current trend in the fashion world that models expressions have taken on a far more ‘darker’ tone than say even 5 years ago.

This post was meant to be taken light heartedly and not a dig at the models themselves 🙄

CryptoFascist · 26/06/2026 11:16

How about that squatting-for-an-outdoor-piss-pose that they all do now? Totally hides the clothes, weird!

A way to show the models legs I thought. But it is weird.

@Flyingintotheunknown People are wondering why the models are being told to pull these faces, or why these particular pictures are being chosen. I don’t think anyone thinks these models couldn’t do a different expression or that they’re not beautiful women. I think you’re a bit too personally affected by this to really see it from anyone else’s perspective tbh. I’m sorry this has triggered you, it was just some ordinary women sharing some laughs about something they’d noticed a lot while shopping.

Agree with you. After all no one is forcing these models to work in the industry. If you don't like the ethos then don't do it.

drspouse · 27/06/2026 10:19

I'm pretty sure Patrick Grant did not get paid (in cash at least) for that modelling gig.
I had my photo taken for a serious topic for the paper recently. Though it didn't quite end up being Daily Mail sad face, it definitely wasn't my cheeriest face either.

Beachtastic · 27/06/2026 11:32

Yeah, it's all a bit "Did you spill my pint"

VirtueName · 27/06/2026 11:40

minipie · 26/06/2026 11:25

It’s because smiley models are associated with catalogue clothes and other unfashionable brands.

The grump is there to tell you it’s ART, ok??

Exactly that. Smiley equals the type of model who does the Littlewoods and Damart catalogues, or those photos of comfortable slacks and stairlifts at the back of Sunday supplements.

I think it's worse than that: it conveys the notion that feeling comfortable in your own skin means being slightly hostile.

riversofjoy · 27/06/2026 12:04

Yes its bizarre - they all look like a bulldog chewing a wasp.

Also, why the weird poses? why can they never just show models standing up normally and walking normally so we can see how the clothes drape and look?

On ASOS, lots of the models are doing obscure poses like half squatting with their arms crossed as if they are taking a shit in the dirt, or leaning over on one leg with the other high up in the air behind them, or they have their arms high above their heads like theyre at a rave- just stand normally dammit!

notanotherfootballmatch · 27/06/2026 12:04

AsteriaBuffy · 26/06/2026 22:00

To be clear, what my OP is griping about is the marketing and creative direction. Not the models themselves, who may well be - and very probably are - perfectly cheery and very nice people.

For me it's the awful posture that is used. For what felt like weeks I kept seeing a woman wearing a long skirt with the combination of sticking her belly out whilst standing round-shouldered. It looked awful. I've seen the same pose repeatedly now, just why?

OriginalUsername2 · 27/06/2026 12:24

It’s even on this very thread in the ads!

This girl has just been told off for smacking her cousin

Flyingintotheunknown · 26/06/2026 21:37

Seriously?? You think models don’t eat 🤣

I’m well aware that in the high fashion modelling industry that many models are bullied by their agencies into having eating disorders because they are literally manipulated into shaving inches off their waist to “book the job”. This can be an extremely toxic industry and these models don’t starve themselves for fun, they do it because they get shit from their agencies for being “too fat”. But to tar them all with the same brush and make fun of them, claim they don’t eat through choice is quite frankly disgusting!

Why are you getting so worked up and defensive on this thread? It is a lighthearted thread and you are taking it so personally because of your ‘experience’.

Sunglade · 27/06/2026 12:38

Agree, it's been a thing for a long time now. I remember it had started when high street TopShops were still here, models looking sullen or downright grumpy.

I like a jacket from Mango but the model looks like she's stoned/ half asleep/ giving her mate behind you a signal to nick your phone.

If you don't know Patrick Grant, you need to watch the Sewing Bee to fully appreciate his charm, charisma and utter gorgeousness!

I know him from Sewing Bee and love him!

Iggii · 27/06/2026 12:43

Damart model looking slightly smug as she's allowed to smile and stand in a normal manner

People are gently mocking the industry. Not the models, who are just doing as instructed.

Brilliant!
This one is lurking down an alleyway, waiting to mug you.

I had a fight with her in high school. Didn't win.

Same!

Exactly! I think it might be worth the 'industry' taking a look at how the actual customers feel about the way they are promoting those clothes.
I look at those 'who the hell do you think you are?!' expression and conclude those clothes are not for me.

Yes. Nobody wants simpering, moronic grinning or come-hithering (well I don't).

But maybe some middle ground between that and homicidal? Some humour even?

Most importantly - show what the clothes actually look like, where the pockets are (and how deep, can you get a big phone in there without risk of it falling out) etc etc.

This one is doing the passive-aggressive "are you OK, Hun?" complete with the head-tilt. Riverboat Cardigan - Seasalt Cornwall

She's not a model, she just wandered into the photoshoot and is getting chippy with the photographer for taking her pic.

I'm explaining away the rest as hangry, the Seasalt ones have had their chips pinched by a rogue seagull.

Darragon · 27/06/2026 17:29

Wow that took a very po-faced turn.
