What current fashion trends will we cringe at in 25 years? (Lighthearted, just for fun)

I was looking through old photos and had a proper ‘what the hell was I thinking?!’ moment. Things like ultra low cut jeans with embellishments, big belts, tiny sunglasses, extreme side parting etc. Some of my old outfits and haircuts aged terribly, while friends who kept things simple still looked like they belong to that era, yet somehow managed to look stylish.

It got me wondering: which current trends will make people in 2050 look at today’s photos and cringe?

I’m thinking:

  • Laminated brows
  • Exaggerated barrel leg trousers
  • Chunky sandals with thick soles
  • Puff sleeves
  • French tuck

I don’t mean to diss these, I actually like some of them! I realise everything dates and nothing is truly timeless but some trends are bound to age worse than others. What other trends do you think will make us cringe in 25 years?

Cold shoulder tops

Potato tops. Popular with women who were a bit overweight.

Oversized jackets with wide trousers

DeeNiall · 24/06/2026 12:58

Straightened hair

Those men's tracksuit pants that are really baggy at the top but stretch tight over the calves and finishing just above the ankles.

To me, at least, it looks like they must be wearing a nappy. The proportions are all wrong, somehow.

My favourite Crocs story is that the costume designer for the film, "Idiocracy" (2004) was looking for some shoes, "So ugly that they would never become fashionable" Guess what she found? A small business start up in California which was making...

Wide legged trousers

Scrunch bum shorts

Absolutely these!!!

Bright white trainers.
Peplums of any kind.
Tiered skirts and dresses - how do you even begin to iron those if you are into ironing?
High waisted anything.
Leggings any kind with a short top.
Nighties as dressies.
The beige trenchcoat (even though I have one) 😳
Massive chunky shoes especially with dresses.
Anything hugely oversized.
Logo heavy garments - I'm not a billboard.
Crop tops and cold shoulder tops.
Ballet shoes - hideous.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/06/2026 13:12

Also probably leopard print even though I am a massive fan.

Toowhiteforawedding · 24/06/2026 13:18

In the same way that people who used to over-pluck their eyebrows ended up with tiny threads when fashion changed, I think people with any kind of cosmetic tattooing or bright white tooth veneers may regret it later.

And bloody peplums. They didn’t look good on anybody the first time around and they certainly don’t now. Puffball skirts I quite like though so 🤷‍♀️

Nonnim · 24/06/2026 13:26

The other day I saw a Dad in the high street wearing a pale pink shirt (the kind worn with a suit), cargo shorts, knee length red socks and orange trainers.

I wonder if he thought he was so down with the kids.

Kadiofakit · 24/06/2026 13:26

Big curly fringes for teenage boys. My DS who is now 19, does not seem to grow out of it and it looks awful

Media walls

100%
Also bi-fold doors

I think it will be the over exaggerated make up look. The huge eyelashes and fake dark eye brows, in addition the too much filler and Botox, and the over exaggerated contouring etc, and the over exaggerated glasses.

i think it will dial back, still a flawless look but one that also looks natural,it’s already going there with the glass skin. It will just take today’s look and dial it down a few notches, to a sort of natural ethereal healthy look.

so I think we will cringe at all the over exaggeration we see today.

obviously there is some silly shit in terms of fashion. The socks, sliders, socks over leggings, scrunch bum leggings, cold shoulder tops, furry mules, the clingy athlesiure look , the all in one Lycra things, especially in pale colours. Wide leg jeans and trousers that are over exaggerated and really wide, (wide leg at a reasonable width will be fine) and skinny jeans will raise a lot of eyebrows and chuckles, as so few actually can carry them off, it will all look even sillier when we look back.

i think we will or are moving to a much more subtler healthy look, with all the exaggeration toned down.

This look was never fashionable and always tacky though. It’s opted for by women who feel, for whatever reason, that they can’t pull off the naturally beautiful ‘clean girl’ look that is in style (or those like Dolly P who want to look ‘trashy’ on purpose).

The exaggerated look was more 2016. Not 2026.

@willwashdishes , I've never liked the 'bring the outdoors in ' look. Must be hell having wall-size south-facing windows in this weather.

Given the trench coat has been around since the 1850’s, I’m not sure that will go out of style any time soon!
I have a particular aversion to cold shoulder tops, especially roll neck jumpers with cold shoulders. Makes no sense. Head to to beigey nude Lycra is also rarely a good look. Hopefully theses will die a death soon

oviraptor21 · 24/06/2026 13:42

Crop tops
Skinny jeans (all jeans really but I might be wrong on that one)
White trainers with all dresses
Black eyebrows unless you have black hair
Big logos

Silverbirchleaf · 23/06/2026 21:46

Cold shoulder tops

Yes! These and those bloody awful waterfall cardigans should be banned 🤣

louderthan · 24/06/2026 13:49

I work in a uni and a lot of the students dress very much how I did as a student 25 years ago. There was a ‘vintage’ clothes fair during freshers week and the biggest section was ‘Y2K’.

lovecotswoldsliving · 24/06/2026 13:51

Rivals is great. Reminds me of those fashion mistakes we made. All those Laura Ashley dresses, which I thought made me look fabulous!

Edited

Sadly that’s not correct, huge eyelashes are very very popular and most insta feeds are filled with how to contour etc, clean girl is currently an aesthetic yes. But fake eyelashes, the brows, lip fillers, frozen faces is very much now.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 24/06/2026 14:00

We will look back on shiny "glass skin" and wonder why everyone looks like they've broken into a pre-vomit sweat.

And why so many women look exactly the same.

UnPetitDunPetit · 23/06/2026 21:47

White socks pulled up over black leggings.

Definitely this! I can’t wait for this look to die a death.

It’s always paired with a big, long football manager puffa coat too. For extra awfulness

I would have thought a beige trench is a classic

Robogob · 24/06/2026 14:18

Hopefully the trowelled on make up and big bloated pillow faces, the Russian lashes, ginormous eyebrows

I think barrel jeans/trousers are probably going to makes it into classic. I hope so because I love them. Other things I think/hope will turn classic are leopard print, soft bellies and ugly fleeces.

HoldMyWine · 24/06/2026 14:22

Leopard print is already a classic , it’s become almost a neutral. I have been wearing it for decades. Anyone remember the viral MN leopard print scarf?

Maybe it’s common but it is not fashionable. It’s people chasing a fashionable look that is only actually in style if natural or well done. Not if everyone can see it’s all fake.
