What current fashion trends will we cringe at in 25 years? (Lighthearted, just for fun)

I was looking through old photos and had a proper ‘what the hell was I thinking?!’ moment. Things like ultra low cut jeans with embellishments, big belts, tiny sunglasses, extreme side parting etc. Some of my old outfits and haircuts aged terribly, while friends who kept things simple still looked like they belong to that era, yet somehow managed to look stylish.

It got me wondering: which current trends will make people in 2050 look at today’s photos and cringe?

I’m thinking:

  • Laminated brows
  • Exaggerated barrel leg trousers
  • Chunky sandals with thick soles
  • Puff sleeves
  • French tuck

I don’t mean to diss these, I actually like some of them! I realise everything dates and nothing is truly timeless but some trends are bound to age worse than others. What other trends do you think will make us cringe in 25 years?

White socks pulled up over black leggings.

This every time

I would have thought a beige trench is a classic

It is and I have one but I think people are getting sick of seeing them on everybody. I prefer the lovely vibrant coloured ones they have over at seasalt with interesting linings.

DeeNiall · 24/06/2026 14:42

Cropped trench coats.

Full sleeve tattoos.
Neck tattoos
Tattoos in general unless you are serving in the Armed forces

I am currently on holiday. There is a mum here - mid 40s I’d say - with lots of tattoos.

Neither of her young adult (late teens/ early twenties) has a single tattoo.

The next generation always want to differentiate themselves from their parents. I can see zero tattoos becoming A Thing.

Chipmunk cheeks
glow in the dark teeth
trout pours
long gel nails
long beards and twirly moustaches
Thong swimsuits
caramel, brown, butter yellow clothing
Peaky blinders haircuts/fades

I love the French tuck, it gives ballance to the top/trouserswith skirt combo.
Detest the ballance trousers, just looks silly.
Massively oversized shapeless dresses.
Starlting white pumps or trainers worn with pretty dresses, wtf? So many lovely shoes and sandles out there.
Neck and facial tattoos, imagine what they'd look like in your fifties and beyond.
Wearing pyjamas and dressing gowns to do the supermarket shopping.
Turkey teeth and lip fillers.

Very little in fashion is original, the number of times in my 78 years I've thought 'I wish I'd kept.....'! Up thread someone mention tying a scarf round hips, this was done in the 1950s, it would need to be a very long scarf now.

I tied silk scarves round my hips in the 1980s, I still think its a nice look now for a young person.

Ruched dresses
Puffy sleeved dresses
The Weird clog shoes with socks
Ruffle anything
Really wide trousers
All things vintage

the weird clog with sock is a lifestyle choice and I choose it... it's my happy place. I can't wait for this weather to feck off so I can get my 'stocks and socks back on.....

Oganesson118 · 24/06/2026 15:18

Wedding dresses. My friend and I have been saying how we're glad we're not getting married now. Way too much see through lace, and too many dresses that look like underwear, or have slits right up to your nether parts or have those silly straps that sit half way down your upper arm and look like they'd annoy you all day.

Potato tops. Popular with women who were a bit overweight.

Oversized jackets with wide trousers

What is a potato top?

TartanTwit · 24/06/2026 15:24

Yes to scrunch bum leggings or shorts, it's basically saying "here's my bum hole and fanny" such a thirsty look!!!

Blue suits and brown shoes have probably had it also summer dress denim jacket and white trainers but it is a handy look.

OtterLovesItsRock · 24/06/2026 15:28

I quite like the "escaped from Victorian asylum in a billowing, uniform-issue nightdress" frocks. I hope they last.

I hope the stupidly high-cut necks go away. Tiny circles that make me feel I can't breathe and that give me shelf-chest, on otherwise summery styles that would suit a scoop or boat neck. I just don't buy them.

Cold shoulder, the little shoulder bit looks like a potato.

Totalmayhem · 24/06/2026 15:48

Prob already been said but…
mullets; trout pout lips; orange fake tan; cement layer levels of foundation; ridiculous false lashes that make it look like they’ve squashed spiders in their eyes; white/wooly socks with trousers & dark loafers.

Oh! I thouht you meant sack shaped tops with armholes. I have and like one of those.

Got rid of my only potato top years back (maroon lurex 😳).

"Glass skin" AKA looking a bit sweaty permanently. I can't wrap my head around why people want to go around looking damp as a fashion statement.

Fully agree! I’m baffled by this trend too.

i was looking at some of my teen photos from the mid-late 2000s and it’s funny how dated they look now, like the outfits and hair (all of the extreme side parts!) would look really out of place nowadays. It reminded me of being that age and looking at my mums photos from the 80s and how dated they looked, and thinking that would never be the case for me and my friends 😅

Redheadedstepchild · 24/06/2026 17:18

What I do think if definitely out for good is wearing high heels, at least for everyday wear. I could be wrong and Sex And The City style stiletto shoes could make a comeback for day to day strutting or falling over but the only people I can think of who wear classic high heeled court shoes is Katherine, Princess of Wales and she only wears them on formal engagements, some cabin crew members for one of the fancier airlines and Victoria Beckham.

They just don't look right anymore. Wedges or a bit of a platform will probably stick around and high heeled boots might well do but that standard court shoe look for everyday is gone. Especially with a very thin heel.

They're just too difficult to wear for a serious revival, I think.

Nomura · 24/06/2026 18:40

Balloon trousers, but i don't care, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it plus ill be so old, no one will care what im wearing.
