What current fashion trends will we cringe at in 25 years? (Lighthearted, just for fun)

I was looking through old photos and had a proper ‘what the hell was I thinking?!’ moment. Things like ultra low cut jeans with embellishments, big belts, tiny sunglasses, extreme side parting etc. Some of my old outfits and haircuts aged terribly, while friends who kept things simple still looked like they belong to that era, yet somehow managed to look stylish.

It got me wondering: which current trends will make people in 2050 look at today’s photos and cringe?

I’m thinking:

  • Laminated brows
  • Exaggerated barrel leg trousers
  • Chunky sandals with thick soles
  • Puff sleeves
  • French tuck

I don’t mean to diss these, I actually like some of them! I realise everything dates and nothing is truly timeless but some trends are bound to age worse than others. What other trends do you think will make us cringe in 25 years?

All the horrible wide leg trousers that suit nobody.

All the silly front tucking of tops leaving a big flappy bit at the back to make you look like a penguin in a dinner jacket.

Short tops and jumpers that emphasise how big your bum and tummy are - and focus the eye on the crotch.

All current dresses.

TBF I cringe at most of the stuff now never mind in 25 years time.

I’ll get me coat.*

*which will be one of those massive dry robe things. Wink

or a coat that is very short and wide and loose so it doesn't keep you warm and dry.

I think we are finally moving towards everything is on trend as long as I like it, which is great. But I do hope the Botox, fillers, laminated eyebrows etc are not here to stay (although I’m guessing it’s too late for that now).

eatreadsleeprepeat · 24/06/2026 19:14

But will we also love them again in 50 years? I walked round Next a few days ago and was taken back to the 70’s. Except of course not to the size I was then.😂.

I do love a wide leg trousers and delighted skinnies are so yesterday.

OtterLovesItsRock · 24/06/2026 19:33

I hope that pretty and silly socks are here to stay.

GaIadriel · 24/06/2026 21:10

Fat people in skinny jeans.

dudsville · 24/06/2026 21:18

I keep seeing bum cheeks. That seems to be a new thing. Personally, I look away immediately as it seems awfully personal and awkward, but is it any different to cleavage? I would like to think we'll look back on this in 2050 and wonder wtf, but in my mind it sits alongside wearing leggings as trousers, and now in summer the short version of leggings as shorts, etc., and all seems reminiscent of the dystopian films of the 90s/00s in which the women wear barely anything.

Yes! These are going to age so badly.

Because pyjamas are so comfy!

LancashireButterPie · 25/06/2026 15:01

Long gel nails or nail art.

Leopard print is already a classic , it’s become almost a neutral. I have been wearing it for decades. Anyone remember the viral MN leopard print scarf?

I definitely think it’s a neutral. But not yet a classic. But is so almost is that I take your point.

I really, really hate wide trousers and as for flares….. after the 70s I said never again! I also hope dresses with tiers disappear. I hate those too!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2026 22:34

Weird shiny foreheads and big puffy lips
eyebrows that look lego
eyelashes that look like someone making pretend eyelashes with their hands
(extra points if all three are on the same face)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/06/2026 08:41

I have struggled to buy trousers the past couple of years as they're all wide legged . I did invest in some M&S cotton-mix barrel trousers which look ok , not clown-like but baggier than I'd like . But it's fashion. <meh>

THankfully the end is nigh for tiered dresses , really not a fan.

Lip fillers , the biuccal fat look, massive over white teeth, (I'm fine with veneers generally )

I looked at some of my old photos , I thought I looked fabulous and regret not taking advantage of how good I looked at 18 !

Gettingbysomehow · 27/06/2026 09:15

Massive fish lips.
Huge bottoms
Large fake boobs.
Anything with a scruch bum.
Thong swimsuits.

Ive spent my whole lifetime trying to get rid of my unfashionable large bottom. Then I finally managed it after 2 years of extreme dieting and exercise only to find massive bottoms are in. WTF.

Im desperately trying to find a beautiful dress but they ALL have tiers. I HATE them.

GreenLemonade · 27/06/2026 09:40

I’m glad there’s a wide range of trouser shapes available in stores these days. I love wide leg but can’t get on with anything tapered/barrel/mom/carrot etc. It’s such a refreshing change from the times when skinny was the only option!
