What current fashion trends will we cringe at in 25 years? (Lighthearted, just for fun)

I was looking through old photos and had a proper ‘what the hell was I thinking?!’ moment. Things like ultra low cut jeans with embellishments, big belts, tiny sunglasses, extreme side parting etc. Some of my old outfits and haircuts aged terribly, while friends who kept things simple still looked like they belong to that era, yet somehow managed to look stylish.

It got me wondering: which current trends will make people in 2050 look at today’s photos and cringe?

I’m thinking:

  • Laminated brows
  • Exaggerated barrel leg trousers
  • Chunky sandals with thick soles
  • Puff sleeves
  • French tuck

I don’t mean to diss these, I actually like some of them! I realise everything dates and nothing is truly timeless but some trends are bound to age worse than others. What other trends do you think will make us cringe in 25 years?

Those platform soles Ugg clog things

itsmeafterall · 24/06/2026 10:02

Got a new one.

wedding dresses with see through / underwear style tops.

(yes I watch far too many episodes of say yes to the dress!).

FiveShelties · 24/06/2026 10:16

Leggings, huge eyebrows and eye lashes.

But they may all be back in fashion in 50 years😁

FruAashild · 24/06/2026 10:19

Based on my DC (who dress like they are members of All Saints) in 25 years the teens will be wearing what is fashionable now yet again.

PinkyPeony · 24/06/2026 10:25

Co Ords, why was I in pyjamas?

henlake7 · 24/06/2026 10:33

I agree with laminated brows, and all 'fashionable' tweakments or surgeries (just look at buccal fat removal).

Although I really dont think there will be many 'oh my god, what was I wearing?' moments in the future. Fashion seems alot more about comfort rather then looking a certain way. Plus there is more emphasis on dopamine dressing/individuality which is a very good thing IMO!

To be fair most of these things would have already been cringed at and come back round again in 25 years time. I remember being in school and you were defo getting bullied if you wore New Balance Trainers or Crocs

Very little in fashion is original, the number of times in my 78 years I've thought 'I wish I'd kept.....'! Up thread someone mention tying a scarf round hips, this was done in the 1950s, it would need to be a very long scarf now.

Yes! These are going to age so badly.

Oh I love a co ord.

HoldMyWine · 24/06/2026 11:18

I do as well! But I can’t see them being around forever

Cloudconfusion · 24/06/2026 11:21

I think it will be the over exaggerated make up look. The huge eyelashes and fake dark eye brows, in addition the too much filler and Botox, and the over exaggerated contouring etc, and the over exaggerated glasses.

i think it will dial back, still a flawless look but one that also looks natural,it’s already going there with the glass skin. It will just take today’s look and dial it down a few notches, to a sort of natural ethereal healthy look.

so I think we will cringe at all the over exaggeration we see today.

obviously there is some silly shit in terms of fashion. The socks, sliders, socks over leggings, scrunch bum leggings, cold shoulder tops, furry mules, the clingy athlesiure look , the all in one Lycra things, especially in pale colours. Wide leg jeans and trousers that are over exaggerated and really wide, (wide leg at a reasonable width will be fine) and skinny jeans will raise a lot of eyebrows and chuckles, as so few actually can carry them off, it will all look even sillier when we look back.

i think we will or are moving to a much more subtler healthy look, with all the exaggeration toned down.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/06/2026 11:24

Barrel leg jeans/trousers,

Very wide leg crops.

Very wide legs full stop.

OvernightBloats · 24/06/2026 11:27

Flesh coloured leggings
Lycra shorts which look like cycle shorts
Really wide trousers that flap about
Groucho Marx black eyebrows
Neck tattoos
Lip fillers

Winterpeach · 24/06/2026 11:36

A lot cringe me out now.
Crunch bum leggings, wide leg trousers.
People with botox and fillers.
Huge brows.
And many more on the thread.

Do crunch bum leggings make an embarrassing sound when you sit down or something? Great typo 😅

I dont know about noise but I did sit next to a lady in the opticians, when she got up she left a awful sweat arse crack patch on the chair.

This hits the nail on the head! You said what I was trying and failing to articulate.

Anything that is exaggerated and/or unnatural will date badly.

I saw a woman on the bus yesterday wearing a puff ball skirt!!!
she was way too young to have worn one when I did (1980s) are they back in fashion?

I had to Google what a puff ball skirt was lol.
They look awful.

MagpiePi · 24/06/2026 12:18

Wearing flesh coloured leggings, and everything being beige.

It think the face fillers will go the same way as tramp stamp and tribal tattoos but people are going to have to live with them as they can't be lasered away or covered up like tattoos.

The wide leg trousers you see nowadays are no worse than the ones that were around in the Britpop/grunge/rave era.

mit123 · 24/06/2026 12:23

Definitely ridiculous eyebrows and trout lips :-)

Crispynoodle · 24/06/2026 12:45

The puff ball skirts and puff ball sleeved tops are a devil to iron who could be bothered I wish thong bikinis would disappear

Additup · 24/06/2026 12:46

Hopefully cosmetic fillers, botox etc etc

KittyCorncrake · 24/06/2026 12:53

Slug eyebrows, exaggerated lashes and pillow lips are already chavvy
