My DDs wedding is fast approaching and although I've tried on many dresses and have kind of got an ok dress, I'm not 100% sure it's the one. Wedding will be bright and colourful, church followed by gorgeous victorian conservatory venue reception. I'm 56, 5'8 Sz 14-16 with a largishbust/hourglass figure.
I want a block coloured magenta/,fuscia pink which i think will complement my hair which is salt& pepper but is being grey blended and styled before the big day.

Can I have your honest (but not too harsh) opinions please?
The one I think I'll go with is fron Wallis from vinted having exhausted my search for a new one online. I can upload the others that I have also bought.

Also to say I prefer longer length as I do have a pesky varicose vein in my calf that I'm a bit self conscious of.

I would concur on the OK view you have. The colour is great for a colourful summer wedding.

The style really suits you but I don’t think it’s a wow dress if that’s what you are after. Will you wear a hat? Some amazing accessories could really lift it, silver shoes would look great.

scoobs321 · 07/06/2026 09:17

Thank you @Drivingmissrangey I think that's what I'm most concerned about, that it suits me. Not sure about a hat/hatinator I'm not that keen but would be willing to experiment ... and yes to accessories to lift the overall loo, I'm guessing silver would be better than gold with my hair.

It looks beautiful on you and will be perfect for a wedding

These are the other dresses I bought to try.

First dress, definitely. You look amazing in that and I am very envious.

AImportantMermaid · 07/06/2026 09:24

I think it’s a WOW dress. It’s very flattering and you look great in it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/06/2026 09:24

I love that dress op. Amazing shoes, great jewellery and you’ll look amazing. I wouldn’t bother with headwear myself, always think it looks aging. I’d go for a silver necklace and dangly earrings and silver sandals. Have an awesome day with your family.

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 09:27

The first dress is lovely on you. Perfect for the event you describe and will look excellent in photos. Wrong shoes, though; far too heavy and wintery. You obviously would not wear a hat with this dress.

The second, satin cerise dress doesn’t suit you and looks a bit of a mess. The pink is ok, fits well, but is not terribly celebratory.

AImportantMermaid · 07/06/2026 09:27

I wouldn’t bother with a hat or hat type thing either. If you’re having your hair put up you could have a jeweled clip or something but otherwise I’d leave it. No sense in gilding the lily!

Sunloungerhogger · 07/06/2026 09:27

I think the first dress is perfect - it fits the description of what you’ve said you’re looking for, it really suits you and is very flattering, I think it’s very elegant - and definitely sufficiently wow! So just some great accessories (don’t feel you need to wear a hat if that isn’t you - my mum didn’t wear a hat for my wedding because it just wasn’t her), and your outfit is sorted!

Findlaters · 07/06/2026 09:31

It’s superb. Get some good jewellery, no hat, it doesn’t need it

Firesidechatter · 07/06/2026 09:32

I also think the first dress, the other two don’t work. The first one is actually really nice and flattering on when you click and open the full length pic.

Firesidechatter · 07/06/2026 09:33

The shoes are wrong though a pale tan, a pale gold or silver would work, but the brown is a no, they are too heavy for the dress.

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 09:36

If you’re not sure - can I ask where you’ve been looking, and what your budget is?

(The dress you’ve chosen isn’t a fashionable shape or colour - but it does look really good on you, so I guess it’s a question of exactly how you want to look.)

scoobs321 · 07/06/2026 09:54

Thanks to all that have commented, the shoes in the photo are just what i had to hand won't be wearing those!

@Tocsin yes I agree with you I know it's not current in style. I want to feel comfortable in a dress that flatters, block colour for a cool skin colour. The motg and family will be in bright colours (think ethnic elaborate prints) and I don't want to fade in to the background in a flowery pale dress.

I've tried this one and had my hopes set on it but looked like a sack of spuds irl!

The first dress is lovely on you, I wouldn't worry about being on trend, it's your daughters wedding and they tend to be more traditional than a runway.

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 10:06

Ah, now I get you!

I’m a very different colouring but in a similar price bracket to the Fold dress I might have considered this (if it were not sold out):

https://www.essentiel-antwerp.com/uk/p/orange-dress-jayda?ref=MTI0

It’s a brand worth keeping an eye on for committed colour.

Definitely go with this if you want to channel your inner traffic cone.

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 10:15

Size 14-16 stately and dramatic is rather a nice brief …

This brand isn’t popular on S&B for some reason, but I adore the ‘intentionality’ of their dresses. This for example, there are obviously plenty more:

I've been steering away from anything too flat fronted hence the little ruffle bit on the first dress, to cover the inevitable middle aged tum.

(Sorry, crossed you, @scoobs321!)

geoger · 07/06/2026 10:44

I like the first dress on you - good colour and good shape
Have you looked at Nigel Rayment? They have a shop in London with some really lovely dresses. Plus they give great advice and will help with shoes and headpieces too

Frazzledinmyforties · 07/06/2026 10:46

I love the first dress! My mum wore something similar to my wedding. With some lovely jewellery it’ll be perfect.

cheesymarmite · 07/06/2026 10:50

You look gorgeous in the first dress!
