MOTB dress help

My DDs wedding is fast approaching and although I've tried on many dresses and have kind of got an ok dress, I'm not 100% sure it's the one. Wedding will be bright and colourful, church followed by gorgeous victorian conservatory venue reception. I'm 56, 5'8 Sz 14-16 with a largishbust/hourglass figure.
I want a block coloured magenta/,fuscia pink which i think will complement my hair which is salt& pepper but is being grey blended and styled before the big day.

Can I have your honest (but not too harsh) opinions please?
The one I think I'll go with is fron Wallis from vinted having exhausted my search for a new one online. I can upload the others that I have also bought.

Also to say I prefer longer length as I do have a pesky varicose vein in my calf that I'm a bit self conscious of.

Also have you checked the Next website? They have lots of brand eg Gina Bacconi, Phase 8, Adrianna Papell that do dresses suitable for weddings

AnchorWHAT · 07/06/2026 10:56

Love it, i would wear with silver shoes, bag and take a silver satin wrap, big silver earrings and either a silver grey hat or one of those beautiful diamonte bridal combs in my hair.

scoobs321 · 07/06/2026 11:02

@geoger yes I've been through just about every high street website for months, have tried on lots of styles and colours and just can't quite find the right thing for me. The 1st dress in my OP is the closest one found to what suits me. Even then, I'm not a big fan of the cross over bust. It does have a front side split which looks nice though.

Just want to say thanks ever so much for the comments which have been much more positive than I expected. I was having alot of doubt this morning & scrolling like a demon to find alternatives. I think i will still keep looking but don't feel as conflicted as I did before posting. X

I like the colours of all three dresses. The styles not so much. Not keen on that frill in the first dress. They all look a bit dated.

I like the red dress suggested by Tocsin and the style of the yellow dress, though the print may be too bold. I think you can do better.

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 11:22

The OP has described a type of wedding I’m familiar with. Nothing would be ‘too bold’!

I feel your pain OP when you’re looking for the perfect dress and just want to feel 100% in what you’re wearing. Like you I’m not too keen on wrap over fronts but it does suit you. Lovely jewellery and the right headpiece will bring the whole outfit together
If you live in London have you been to After Dark? Beautiful dresses and like Nigel Rayment a very personalised service.

BuntyBeaufort · 07/06/2026 12:23

I don’t think you need to look any further. The dress suits you beautifully - right colour and fit.
As others have said, the right accessories will take it to a whole new level. What about a satin head band if you don’t want a hat (don’t blame you tbh)?

EnoughRain · 07/06/2026 12:41

I like the colour of the first dress, but it’s not flattering. The other 2 are not good.

partystress · 07/06/2026 13:07

I think you look fabulous in the first dress. The right shoes, hairdo and jewellery will make all the difference. If it were me, I would look for a gorgeous pashmina, paler than the dress but with a subtle pattern in the fuschia, to just drape and add a bit of contrast without breaking up the impact of the dress.

What does "flattering" mean? Of the dresses on this thread the 2 suggested by tocsin are amazing and the OP's first choice is much nicer than anything else.

The Nigel Rayment dress is awful as is the Gina Bacconi, Phase 8, Adrianna Papell stuff.

OP, stick with your first choice (or tocsin's "traffic cone")

PhaedraTwo · 07/06/2026 13:54

Tocsin · 07/06/2026 10:06

Ah, now I get you!

I’m a very different colouring but in a similar price bracket to the Fold dress I might have considered this (if it were not sold out):

https://www.essentiel-antwerp.com/uk/p/orange-dress-jayda?ref=MTI0

It’s a brand worth keeping an eye on for committed colour.

Love that, in either orange or the black and white. Enormous swooshing potential (especially if wedding were in Scotland - a Gay Gordons or a Strip the Willow in that dress would be fabulous)

mizu · 07/06/2026 13:56

First dress looks amazing.

SliceofTosst · 07/06/2026 14:41

First dress is perfect. It's fits you beaufully and is vibrant.

TheSquareMile · 07/06/2026 14:44

@scoobs321

When is the wedding, OP?

scoobs321 · 07/06/2026 15:45

@TheSquareMile 1st August so it will be pretty hot I should think especially in a conservatory environment!

Im nowhere London so travelling to see dresses in person isn't an option and although i do like some of those Nigel plRayment dresses, they are a bit out of my budget. But thank you for taking time to make suggestions x

I think it looks really lovely. I’m a similar shape to you and have never tried anything like that before (I go for sacks!) but you have inspired me. Enjoy your day.

TheSquareMile · 07/06/2026 15:54

@scoobs321

You're welcome.

There's still time to scout out other dresses.

I do think that the fact that you are tall and trim means that you will look really striking in a wide range of dresses, especially if you choose a colour which complements your hair and skin.

Which colours make you look your best, do you think?

How much would you like to spend?

mantlepiece · 07/06/2026 19:36

I wore that crossover style dress for one of my DC wedding. I am also large in the bust. The right bra made so much difference to the look, I would definitely take the dress with you to get fitted with the correct bra.

Edited

The dress in your first picture is much nicer.

scoobs321 · 07/06/2026 19:54

@mantlepiece yes I definitely need a decent bra, good idea to take the dress with me.

@TheSquareMile Im keen to stick with a vibrant magenta or maybe cobalt blue, budget is probably £500 max and it would have to be pretty special.

Yes, I can imagine cobalt blue being a good match for your colouring.

Is sleeveless your preference?

TheSquareMile · 07/06/2026 20:23

@scoobs321

There aren't as many suitable dresses in cobalt as I hoped there would be, OP.

I think that this is cobalt.
