Intimate waxing

A friend of mine keeps telling me to get this done but I just don't have the confidence. I like the idea of being hair free down there and the bits I can't quite reach with my razor but I still can't bring myself to book it. Do a lot of women do this and how did you get over the initial embarrassment?

If you have tiktok, look at an account called @ thebrazilianwaxcompany (sorry Mumsnet won't let me post the account name without a space after the @). She's so nice and her account is all about answering 'embarrassing' questions and dispelling fears around intimate waxing

Livpool · 06/06/2026 16:17

My friend does it - she says she has as many vulvas as a gynaecologist 😂

Besidemyselfwithworry · 06/06/2026 16:23

Hair removal cream or foam
put on
leave
wash off
job done

if you are really that bothered!

KellsBells7 · 06/06/2026 16:34

I’m a recent convert to Hollywood waxing. The lady I went to said I could leave knickers on if I wanted to but that I’d get a better result without. She said she does so many in a day that it takes more than a vulva or bum hole to shock her!

I just stripped off, she was vey good at putting me at ease. Not hugely painful, and I’m very happy with the result.

It sounds appalling. Why do pubes need to be completely removed to be "well-groomed"?I thank god I'm of an age when no one would have dreamed of removing any pubes apart from shaving any that poked out of the side of a bikini, and men still loved having sex with women, including oral, with full pubic hair. I have a recollection there was even a rugby song about a woman with long pubic hairs and it was not in a disgusted way!
I just don't know why anyone would subject themselves to a painful embarrassing procedure unless for medical reasons.

Why do you assume women do it for men?

I get waxed for me, because I prefer it and feel cleaner. DD16 (not even sexually active) is the same.

LaJacondeFumantLaPipe · 06/06/2026 16:52

I used to have regular waxes but I really hate the whole process. Yes, I know they see the same thing all day everyday and all that. I have had children too but obviously not one every 5 - 8 weeks or so!

So if you don't want to do it, you should definitely not feel pressured at all. It is fine to take care of it at home with a bikini trimmer or whatever. I actually prefer that to waxing. It is also fine to not get rid of it at all!

Electricsausages · 06/06/2026 16:57

Do what You want to do
Don’t let your ‘friend’ bully you into something your not comfortable with
fur or no fur it’s your body

cottagecheese1 · 06/06/2026 16:57

My mum had lost all her pubic hair by the time she was 75 and definitely didn't look pre-pubescent as a result!

Marmaladeaddict · 06/06/2026 16:58

Honestly can’t see why any friend would be remotely bothered about whether someone else has their public hair removed. It’s beyond bizarre.

You looked?!!

Pineapples123 · 06/06/2026 17:25

I have a Hollywood every few weeks, the first one felt awkward but after that it was fine, and not painful either. Definitely advise getting a recommendation if you go for it, I went with a lady who was really highly recommended and she’s brilliant and has become a good friend. I find the regrowth much better than it was from shaving

cottagecheese1 · 06/06/2026 17:37

Marmaladeaddict · 06/06/2026 16:58

You looked?!!

I saw when I helped her wash and dress.

trikonasanallama · 06/06/2026 19:13

I've had it all lasered off apart from a strip at the front - love how it looks and feels, did it for me, not a man.

OP, it's ultimately your choice - if you don't want to do it, don't, but if you do there's definitely no reason to feel embarrassed - the beautician does this all the time!

Ilovesandwiches · 06/06/2026 21:29

i’ve been thinking the same!!! but like you i’m a bit nervous! not so much of the pain but the idea of getting my bits out

CardboardBoxesLily · 06/06/2026 22:09

I now do my own with a stripless hot wax kit (similar to Lycon), highly recommend if you’ve had it done a few times and therefore know what you’re doing. It’s scary at first but once you get over the initial fear of pulling it’s no different to when the professional does it.

Greenteaandbiscuits · 06/06/2026 22:43

towhoknowswhere · 06/06/2026 15:48

I couldn’t give a shit what folk do with their pubes but can we all please stop telling grown women that have no pubic hair that they look pre pubescent!

It gives me the rage. No 1 some women naturally have very little body hair and definitely don’t look like little girls and no 2 I can assure you that my hairless fanny looks nothing like a child’s after being battered by child birth (and generally ageing)

So let’s stop with the lazy bullshit comment, I actually find it a bit creepy.

Oh goshhh yes to this! So much changes inside and out during puberty. Pre-pubescent and full adult genitals look very different regardless of hair.

Just do whatever YOU'RE most comfortable with, it has f-all too do with your friends, your partner, or random people on mumsnet 😂

OP - to answer your actual question... it is a strange position to be in, but totally normal for the beautician so any embarrassment you feel is all in your head, it's on you too negotiate that - if the embarrassment would make the whole thing toomuch for you, don't do it, it you think you can get over it and get through it, give it a try.

It is painful and depending on what your regrowth is like, you might not like the feel of it anyway. Honestly you'll only know if I'd for you if you try it once. I tried it, and decided to just continue with other methods as the results just weren't worth the discomfort, cost, etc.

Morepositivemum · 06/06/2026 22:48

I wear underwear and get an extended bikini wax done which means it’s the shape of your underwear and in a little. Solely done for when I’m going to be in a swimsuit and not even always then, otherwise I leave it, it’s all down to what you want, nobody really cares

PinkEasterbunny · 06/06/2026 22:58

I’ve been having a very minimal Brazilian landing strip for years now, but I’ve no idea if this is a popular style or not!

GimmieABreakOr3 · 06/06/2026 23:01

I have had it done for over 10 years now. I am 36! I love getting a Hollywood (so all off). Trust me, the embarrassment goes after a while and you get used to it. You get into all sorts of positions. We even have a giggle about it! It doesn’t take long. The more you get it done, the finer the hair becomes and the less there is to wax :)

giemepeace · 06/06/2026 23:09

Wow, the things women will do to themselves to alter their body is wild. It’s never occurred to me that you’d need to lie there like a smear test. I think if you feel embarrassed op, it’s because your instinct is telling you this is an intimate area and you’re about to show it to a stranger for an (imo) completely unnecessary reason.

You missed out a word there! Otherwise the answer is one (or zero, if the gynae is a man…)

This is what I do too.

bryceQ · 06/06/2026 23:28

I love having a fresh wax. My advice is go to a salon specialising in waxing, not just a massage place that does occasional waxes. The one I go to you have nothing on the bottom half at all and lie in a butterfly position. I can absolutely see this is embarrassing but it becomes less. And it feels so nice after.

ToadRage · 07/06/2026 18:15

To those of you saying how can you talk about that, we have been friends for years, we are close and talk about pretty much everything. I wouldn't just do it cos she told me, I have been considering it for a long while. I have investigated some local places online, maybe i will treat myself to a full leg and bikini line for my next holiday before I go for a full Hollywood.
