Intimate waxing

A friend of mine keeps telling me to get this done but I just don't have the confidence. I like the idea of being hair free down there and the bits I can't quite reach with my razor but I still can't bring myself to book it. Do a lot of women do this and how did you get over the initial embarrassment?

I don’t understand what you would be embarrassed about? The beautician is looking at bikini lines all day long. No different than going to a doctor/nurse for a smear test.

It’s painful though if not done properly so do your research and find the right salon.

LizardyGuts · 06/06/2026 14:33

Just do it yourself? Much cheaper!

If you don't want to bother doing it yourself, you'll have to just get over the embarrassment I guess. Once you've had children that will likely self-resolve anyway 😂

God no - Can't think of anything worse.

I've never ever had a conversation about my pubic hair, im wondering how you even ended up discussing it.

Ultimately, if your not comfortable then don't do it.

Definitely not true!

I got bikini waxes for years and years in different salons in different places. I never felt embarrassed per se but there’s no getting around the fact that you’re laying there naked from the waist down - but still wearing your socks - with your legs akimbo, labia and cheeks spread wide, and a stranger working away on your pubes for 20 minutes or so. And it hurts. So you just need to weigh all that up against being well groomed down there.

Overtheatlantic · 06/06/2026 14:47

And sometimes you’re on your hands and knees so they can get your butt crack. Or so I’ve been told (cough).

I don't think the beautician cares that much, they offer the service so nothing you have down there will be a surprise to them. It's totally personal choice if you get it done or not but I've generally found getting a wax about on a par with a trip to the dentist. Maybe not fun, but professional and not mortifying.

ladycarlotta · 06/06/2026 15:12

Sorry @Franpie didn't mean to quote you!

FKAT · 06/06/2026 15:16

First of all tell your 'friend' it's none of their business. If you want it for you, yes it is embarrassing but the business offers it and the beautician knows it's part of their job. And it's over in 15 minutes and then you don't have to worry about it for 6 weeks, unlike shaving.

I have no idea how people wax their lady parts at home. Do you get a friend / partner / child to do the pulling?

Flatinbed · 06/06/2026 15:25

The lady I go to is very no fuss. Up on the table, job done and off you go. The only problem is making small talk while masking gasps of shocked discomfort. A bit like the dentist, but different :)

Flatinbed · 06/06/2026 15:27

Get it done once if you are curious and see what you think. I get it done a couple of times a year, when the beautian is having a lull and gives out discounts!

BillieWiper · 06/06/2026 15:29

Why is your friend telling you to have a painful procedure to remove pubic hair? What on earth difference does it make to her how or if you remove your pubes.

Very odd. And no you shouldn't go and get it done just because someone told you to.

HJBeans · 06/06/2026 15:33

I’m old and very lazy with grooming generally, but still find it odd that being ‘well-groomed’ now means making your intimate areas look pre-pubescent. To each their own, but definitely don’t feel pressured if it’s not for you.

”well groomed”?

I’ve never had a bikini wax, ever. I don’t feel particularly unkempt or slovenly because I don’t.

o/p, if you want to do it, do. Your friend and their opinions can fuck off. As can everyone else. As long as you’re clean and healthy anything else is your choice, and only your choice.

JunesDunes · 06/06/2026 15:47

OP - your choice. Don't be made to feel like you have to sonething or bad because you don't. As long as you are clean and happy with yourself, then everything else is just personal preference.

I tried bikini waxing years ago. It is a very reputable salon. I didnt go bare (because I'm not a child) but I had a fair chunk off.

I had red spots for a few days, about a week of feeling smooth and then stubble (it was a very weird feeling because the stubble stuck to my knickers like velcro). The stubble grew back uneven (growth cycles and stuff I guess). I went back when they said I should but because some of the hair was too short, I didn't even get a week of smoothness. I gave up after the third attempt.

At no point in that 2months (?) did I feel "well groomed".

Nowadays, I keep everything clean and trimmed but only shave the edges if there is a reason. I consider myself "well groomed".

towhoknowswhere · 06/06/2026 15:48

I couldn’t give a shit what folk do with their pubes but can we all please stop telling grown women that have no pubic hair that they look pre pubescent!

It gives me the rage. No 1 some women naturally have very little body hair and definitely don’t look like little girls and no 2 I can assure you that my hairless fanny looks nothing like a child’s after being battered by child birth (and generally ageing)

So let’s stop with the lazy bullshit comment, I actually find it a bit creepy.

Can we also stop with the narrative that not waxing means you’re dirty, not “well groomed” or somehow not interested in your appearance or “self care”

people should do what they want. No one else needs to know what you do or don’t do with your pubes.

There is a difference between little hair and no hair. I find men who want women to "not look like women" if you prefer that term creepy.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 06/06/2026 15:51

Tell your friend to stop talking about your fanny.

It sounds appalling. Why do pubes need to be completely removed to be "well-groomed"?I thank god I'm of an age when no one would have dreamed of removing any pubes apart from shaving any that poked out of the side of a bikini, and men still loved having sex with women, including oral, with full pubic hair. I have a recollection there was even a rugby song about a woman with long pubic hairs and it was not in a disgusted way!
I just don't know why anyone would subject themselves to a painful embarrassing procedure unless for medical reasons.

Ilovemyshed · 06/06/2026 16:04

From a practical point of view, its advisable to go with Lycon Hot Wax if you do decide to have it done. Take a couple of painkillers before you go and don’t be on your period.

Ilovegolf · 06/06/2026 16:11

Only do it if you want to op, it’s your body! I have all mine off because I prefer it (DH doesn’t give a shit either way) and it’s my choice. It bloody hurts though, but only for a second or two and I’ve had the same lady doing my waxing for decades. She just cracks on while we catch up.

Cyclebabble · 06/06/2026 16:13

I think you need to think a bit more logically. For the ladies doing the waxing, this is a living. They do many of these and they will not see anything different in doing your wax. I would look for recommendations from friends.
