Which kind of outfit or particular item are you seeing in the hot weather that you'd like to ban Man or woman.

Sorry, I don't earn a mumsnet salary, so I only have standard prescription glasses.

If you're volunteering to buy me new glasses, please go right ahead.

You can get them very cheaply from Specsavers - they’re often in the 2 for 1 deal.

Well no, it's not necessary for people with normal vision as you wouldn't be looking directly at the sun.

Also, I don't believe for a second that every dope I see is wearing sunglasses for solely medical seasons. The overwhelming majority are trying, and failing, at looking fashionable.

Sunnies are needed in the UK, especially in the sneaky semi-cloud days.
Ask an optometrist. Or the RNIB.

RNIB

It’s officially British Summer Time, which means it’s time to dig out your sunnies! Right? 😎 Well actually, you should wear your sunglasses to protect your eyes all year, not just in the summer...

Yes, for my prescription glasses I need for driving I get a Specsavers 2 for 1 deal, one clear pair and the other one tinted. There's no way I could drive safely on a sunny day without them.

Yeah, that poster has a very weird take on sunglasses! My DH can't wear them (they give him an instant headache, it's very strange) and at every checkup he is nagged by the optometrist because they can see the UV damage in the back of his eyes.

awfulapril · 29/05/2026 07:19

laughing a lot at sunglasses
The only time I agree is when influencers wear them inside all the bloody time, like even in January and you're thinking mate no

Practically anything white British men wear when it’s hot!

Jeez what a nasty thread. I agree on the non clothed men though

Why only white British men?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/05/2026 08:36

The comments about cellulite really upset me. I have it and can’t shift it. It’s actually a normal thing some women have and if I want to wear leggings or shorts or whatever I will!

Regarding spending - I used my 2 for 1 to get a pair of varifocals and a pair for computer work (I'm at a screen all day so prefer the large range of vision).
I prioritise that over prescription sunglasses, for which there is an easy solution

Most women have it. Even when it's not as visible walking around, most (like 80%) will have some when they sit. It's how women are built.

Thank you. I used to really tear myself up over it thinking my legs were horrendous and looking at all kinds of things for it. Constantly comparing myself to bigger women who were wearing short shorts who didn’t have it. I’ve only just started to accept it and then reading this thread it’s like I shouldn’t

Because generally black and brown British men either dress better or if they don’t look better in their clothes.

Almost all women have it, even if they're healthy weight and toned. It's to do with how fat is laid in women, which is why men don't have it even if they're very overweight. I'm not sure it's even possible to get rid of it if your body is designed for it; you can make it less pronounced by losing fat and gaining muscle so it might not show in all light, but I think as long as there's some fat on your body, which there should be if you're alive, it's going to be set the way your body sets it.

I'd really like to see it normalised because a) it's VERY normal and b) you can't use the "but health" excuse because there's nothing inherently unhealthy about it. We do need some body fat to be healthy; one might have a less healthy amount of it, but the way it's laid doesn't mean a thing.

Oh I have it although couldn't give a flying fuck 😉

We need to stop comparing ourselves to models and other famous people. I've just been to Greece and saw some stunning women walking around in next to nothing. Also others ranging from overweight to obese. All enjoying themselves wearing whatever they wanted.

I did see some scarily thin women though. More than usual. I worry for them as they age ( bone health)

It’s not any outfit but seeing men without a top on when not on the beach is just awful IMO.

shuggles · 28/05/2026 19:53

@HaveYouFedTheFish Nobody has suggested you do that.

Which means you agree with me. So what are you trying to discuss?

You wrote something totally random unconnected to my post, which you clearly hadn't actually read or understood- I don't agree with you.

I wrote that I wear contact lenses plus sunglasses and my husband wears prescription sunglasses - both are work arounds for people who need prescription lenses.

Driving whilst blinded by the sun and screwing your eyes up to mitigate due to refusing to put sunglasses on is not the flex you seem to think it is.

You replied irrelevantly that driving without prescription glasses would mean you can't see. If you'd actually read what I'd written you'd understand that we do not agree, and your comment was a just random comment which didn't reply to the post you quoted at all.

You could order online and get a pair for £20, though?

IN MY OPINION black and brown men dress better than white men. In a variety of styles. And black and brown skin does not go red and shiny the way white skin does.

ruethewhirl · 28/05/2026 21:20

I remember Dwayne Wayne! Apparently there was a whole trend around that style of glasses, God knows why!

I mean, they were convenient.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/05/2026 15:20

"which is why men don't have it even if they're very overweight. "

I've seen an old man with it. I noticed in in a sauna. It was lower down his legs. I didn't see/notice if it collected around the bum like for women.

I read somewhere that women in hot countries are more confident in their bodies. I'm presuming because they see it more often.
