Which kind of outfit or particular item are you seeing in the hot weather that you'd like to ban Man or woman.

You do realise this is just a thread on mumsnet. I’m not actually allowed to ban these things, so fat women can still wear crop tops and men can still not wear a top at all. I don’t rule……unfortunately. 😅

I think it’s possible to do these light hearted threads and keep ‘isms’ out of it, personally…

Introvert80 · Yesterday 17:08

Shorts that show the bum cheeks. They're a bit much.

How about sexism? Ageism?

Oooh, well aren’t you fancy? 😂

🤣🤣🤣 She IS fancy! I always knead my bread, dough, and pastry between my bum cheeks!

Nelliemott · Yesterday 17:26

Teeny bikini tops and bottoms not on the beach, but all over town. Mind you I did note bodies are more beautiful than they used to be. Hard not to be objective as so much data. Also, top less men, mostly much less beautiful.

And I suppose you have a perfect figure yourself?

Women do not have to shroud themselves in yashmaks if their body shape and size do not happen to conform to other people's ideas of what they should be 'allowed' to wear.

No, they don't. People of all shapes and sizes can wear whatever they want. Whether they look good or not is another matter.

You forgot wet nurse, basic bitch, cheap tart & skanky ... Who needs men to put us down?

Nobody said that anyone IS these things. They said the clothes are so awful (or tiny) that they make them look like X. It's a form of speech called a simile.

I think some outfits I see in the summer do make the person look skanky or like a cheap tart. Why would you want to go around looking like that? We are saying how much we detest certain outfits, because they make people look awful.

I think some people should work on their control issues. People are free to describe clothes however they wish, and I, for one, do not think that describing an outfit as skanky or cheap and tarty is in pearl-clutching territory. It's not up to anyone to work other people's tongues.

StarlightLady · Yesterday 17:42

@NameChangeMay2026 - and why would anyone want to refer to a woman as looking like a “cheap tart” of use the term “tarty”. The next thing on the agenda will be victim blaming.

WhitePudding · Yesterday 17:50

Thong bikinis at the swimming pool/leisure centre. This ain’t Love Island.

Cheap Primark cycling shorts, unless you are 6.

Where l come from food it prepared with your hands, not your bum.

I agree with your point, but when people wipe their hands, they tend to rub their back of their legs. If said legs have been sat on a loo 20 mins ago for a wee, then that is unhygienic.
Germs from the loo seat get passed to chairs, or other furniture, which is later touched by hands. To me, trousers should be mandatory for food prep and clean ones each time. You’d be horrified if a nurse turned up in a pair of those shorts and they’d never be allowed for those very reasons.

Do you know how hot it is working in a chip shop?

I can imagine. But shorts that reveal the butt cheeks are a big no no in a food prep area. It’s basic hygiene. I certainly wouldn’t go back.
They should get an air conditioner, or wear light trousers.

ETA it doesn’t seem very safe either around all that hot equipment and oil.

Boob tubes hate them even on the perkiest of boobs and shirtless middle aged men

Interesting point. But l would have thought as legs are washed more regularly than trousers (or hopefully at any rate) it’s not quite as simple as that?

As someone who enjoys cooking and rarely wears trousers (l love my dresses) l have never thought myself unhygienic when preparing food. I accept that my bum cheeks are coved though.

Clothes should absolutely be clean in a food prep environment and as I said, bare bums have sat places that aren’t so clean, so aren’t as clean as you think. Also, around hot oil, bum showing shorts are ridiculous. It’s completely unprofessional. What you do at home is your business, but a chip shop caters for paying customers who expect a certain standard of professionalism.
If the girl wants to change into those shorts after her shift, be my guest. But she certainly put me off visiting that Swansea chippy afterwards.

SlightFerret · Yesterday 18:07

Bare male chests obvs. Gross and clearly intended to either impress or intimidate, but no one finds that attractive.

No sexism from me. I’d also ban crop tops for fat men but I never see any men in them so it wasn’t worth including men. Likewise, I’d ban topless women in the supermarket etc but again, I don’t see any. I didn’t mention anything to do with age. I would ban fat women in crop tops young to old and shirtless men young to old too.

Very elegant- where are they from?

The images I posted? They're all Massimo Dutti. The pair I have is from Toast via eBay, quite a few years ago. They're really fine pure silk & feel SO lovely to wear!

For women - fat women in crop tops.

For men - men with no tops on.

I'm fat but I am also extremely short so I will continue wearing crop tops because they fit me proportionally.

If that’s the case, who needs anyone to be talking about pale, freckled Celtic skin in such a derogatory way.

Do you mean my post before that, or other people's comments? As I am ginger with pale, freckled Irish skin?!!

That said, I don't like seeing people frazzling themselves to a crisp - it looks painful & is dangerous. I've done it myself in the past through carelessness - but seeing people with really pale skin burn themselves willingly makes me wince!

Linen trousers and tops.

They suit no-one and always look like a crumpled tissue after a few moments of wear.

Thank goodness someone else shares my dislike of linen, thought I was alone in the world. Horrible stuff. Reminds me of potatoe sacks.

80smonster · Yesterday 18:42

Men in those cycling shorts you can see their nuts in, gross.
