Short, short tight gym lycra hotpants ouside the gym..

ScruffMuffin · 25/05/2026 21:10

This.

Went to the beach today - am ginger and pale, so know full well there is no prospect of ever getting a tan. I kept slathering myself in factor 50, and when I was waiting for my husband to get back from a walk and help to apply cream to my back, I covered myself with a towel.

Around midday, this woman came and sat in front of me. She removed her shirt to reveal this horrific-looking sunburn, presumably from the weekend... then proceeded to expose it to the afternoon sun. She was sti there when we left at 4.

I have nothing against people who want to sunbathe or get a tan (or boil themselves like lobsters). I just kept thinking about how much it must hurt, and how ill she is probably going to be feeling later. No matter how careful I am, I occasionally miss an area with the factor 50, and have been burnt a few times - but never as badly or over such a large area as this. It really does hurt, and there's no way I'd have wanted to expose my sunburn to the midday sun. Even for somebody who tans eventually, surely no suntan is worth that amount of discomfort!

'Wife beater' singlet type vests on overweight unfit men

Shirtless men (or women but that never happens) anywhere other than the beach or swimming pool

This! The women equivalent is a bikini bra top.

OneDivineHammer · 25/05/2026 21:19

GlomOfNit · 25/05/2026 20:35

That's not an answer and you know it isn't. I suspect you of being Cod, with much-improved typing.

I could indeed pay someone to do my hooves. I'm not given to 'pampering' though and frankly a bit ashamed of them.

I too suspect the fishy one. 🕵

And you took a photo of her?

Sweeping generalisation of course, but as a nation, we just don’t seem to know how to dress for hot weather. We seem to think that exposing a maximum amount of flesh will keep us cool, whereas in other countries people seem to stay covered in hot weather, but still look cool and elegant. This isn’t a prude thing for me by the way, just aesthetics and more effective cooling!

I've always thought abayas look beautiful and practical by reducing UV access to the skin, but as a short, plump, white atheist I've actually been too worried to wear them for fear of being judged. Don't want to get jumped on by the cultural appropriation gang for appreciating the clothing is ideal for the longer, warmer weather.

Sorry to hear about your hospital stay. Hope you're on the up - being poorly when the country is basking in the sunshine sucks 😞

Thanks. I seem to always be in hospital when the weather is good in Ireland. I remember being stuck on a drip for most of the summer with my first pregnancy (had hyperemesis gravidarium) with no aircon and a window that barely opened. Plus in June 2016 and 2017 I had major surgery and I missed all the nice weather again!

ScruffMuffin · 25/05/2026 21:28

NotTheOrdinary · 25/05/2026 21:20

And you took a photo of her?

Not specifically. I took a lot of photos of different parts of the beach/ town, and it was pretty rammed. This photo is heavily cropped for the purpose of the thread, but contained some gorgeous scenery. 😍

Shirtless blokes. Every single time.
Leave the women alone! 😂

This!!!

WoollyRosebud · 25/05/2026 21:30

Strappy sundresses with a tee shirt underneath. Also strappy sundresses with bra straps showing

Dominoodles · 25/05/2026 21:30

havingoneofthosedays · 25/05/2026 17:15

Linen
flowery midi/maxi dresses
Birkenstocks

What's the issue with longer dresses? Everything is covered, they're not indecent... Good for the warm weather

Mine would be crocheted tops. Sure they look cute but it's not a summer top when it's thick yarn lol

@awfulapril Sunglasses.

There's a certain peurile childishness about wearing sunglasses to try to look like a "cool dude." No one above the age of 10 should be wearing them.

(before someone says... wearing them for medical reasons is different and completely fine).

If the sun is very strong, everyone has a medical reason to protect their eyes!

I direct you to Footner.

These don't work for very hard skin. They only exfoliate the softer skin.

I go to a chiropodist and still have ugly feet. In the same way that I wear makeup and still have an ugly face. I'm not going to walk around with a bag over my head and similarly, if it's over 28 degrees, I'm going to wear sandals.

Shorts that are so short I can see your bum cheeks hanging down. Grim.

"But they're high waisted"
Yeah, it's not the waist that needs to be covered, love!

Tabitha005 · 25/05/2026 21:35

Thong bikinis on the beach in the UK. They’re EVERYWHERE at the moment. Including on girls that are waaaaay too young to be wearing them.

Greening tattoos, ruined by too much time in the sun just look vile.

Sunburn. What IS it with the fucking British and our seeming inability to apply sunscreen properly?

Paunchy shirtless blokes who think they’re David Hasselhoff in his heyday. Ugh! Put it away.

To be fair, proper summer clothing isn't even sold in the UK as the need for it isn't there for more than a week or two every summer.
Go to Spain and you can buy an elegant work suit in a thing summer material, for example.

Ugh! This! No-one wants to see your breakfast, love! The amount of really young girls wearing these things is horrible.

localnotail · 25/05/2026 21:40

Oh yes, another one - women wearing heavy, leather looking tall boots in this heat. I feel a heat stroke coming on just looking at that. Any kid of boots - cowboy, Dr martens, huge knee-high affairs - with tiny dresses, shorts etc. Very often, there would also be knee high socks on show. FFS, how are you not hot??? Its 34 degree. These boots must be full of sweat.
