Housecoat

Not stylish AT ALL but I have finally found a housecoat after months of searching. I have a white cat with longish fur and a black cat so everything I wear in the house is instantly a cat fur magnet and I have spent a fortune on sticky rollers and invariably go out looking like a furry mess....lovely.
I had given up hope of ever finding one. I remember my grandmother wearing one round the house. She was incredibly stylish and well dressed and would never have exposed her nice clothes to children, animals or housework but would take it off if she was going out or expecting visitors.
I think they are due for a comeback 😀

That’s more dressing gown than housecoat

TheBloomingDahlia · 12/05/2026 14:19

I agree, looks like a dressing gown or nightie to me. My auntie used to wear a housecoat but hers was very old fashioned, even 15+ years ago.
I know the pain of the cat fur. I have a washable sticky roller but need two or three really to do a full outfit.
If I didn't fancy some sort of smock or tabard and wanted something classic looking, I think I'd go for what they're now calling a button up house dress, in a fairly neutral pattern

In the North East Housecoat is the word for dressing gown (DD studied and lived there)
Couldn't open the link for some reason.
When I was growing up lots of older ladies wore full cotton aprons ( pinnies) over their clothes during the day and removed it if visitors arrived.

Gettingbysomehow · 12/05/2026 14:32

To be fair nobody but the cats are ever going to see it - I wanted something cool that is not dressing gown fabric for summer 😃

Neither of these links are showing to me. It's just a white screen.

As the owner of two Jack Russels (the most insidious hair known to man) I think this is a bloody great idea and I don’t know why I haven’t thought of it before!

AllTheChaos · 12/05/2026 14:37

I’d love an old fashioned housecoat like my gran wore, none of the links show anything like it alas. It was more like a pinny but that went all the round if that makes sense?

I wear a manky old fleece. It's covered in pet hairs.

I think I want what our dinner ladies at school used to wear like an gingham overall but with out trousers, just a straight drop to knee length ish

As a fellow Jack Russell owner I hear you! I dont fancy that house coat but I'd wear a Japanese style pinny.

piscofrisco · 12/05/2026 14:42

Yaaas but ideally I want a pink gingham one 😁

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/05/2026 14:43

I have a cross-backed apron. It's a bit like Cross Back Linen Apron By Sparks And Daughters but it's cotton and nicer.

Floisme · 12/05/2026 15:56

I can't see the op's link I'm afraid but I have a 1950s housedress and, if I say so myself, it's very cool.

AllTheChaos · 12/05/2026 16:18

That’s exactly it, @JaneJeffer ! Now I just need to find someone who can sew…

That’s more dressing gown than housecoat

My husband calls a dressing gown a housecoat. I think it's quite a good term for it!

I was imagining something a lot more glamorous than that link though, from what the OP described! I was imaging more of a thin coatigan/longline wrap cardigan.
