Housecoat

Not stylish AT ALL but I have finally found a housecoat after months of searching. I have a white cat with longish fur and a black cat so everything I wear in the house is instantly a cat fur magnet and I have spent a fortune on sticky rollers and invariably go out looking like a furry mess....lovely.
I had given up hope of ever finding one. I remember my grandmother wearing one round the house. She was incredibly stylish and well dressed and would never have exposed her nice clothes to children, animals or housework but would take it off if she was going out or expecting visitors.
I think they are due for a comeback 😀

Don't forget to tie a headscarf over your hair!

Over the rollers!

fishonabicycle · 15/05/2026 13:33

That's is as far from a stylish house coat that I could imagine. Looks like a hospital robe thing!

As a fellow Jack Russell owner I hear you! I dont fancy that house coat but I'd wear a Japanese style pinny.

I'll raise you a German Shorthaired Pointer. Her hairs are like needles and sew themselves into fabrics (and bare feet)!

Overhead, cross backed pinny but a beautiful pattern. And only £14.

What has happened in my world that I nipped into this thread for a look and have purchased a pinny. It looks absolutely lovely .....

A hair from a Staffy once inserted itself under my skin like a splinter.

I picked up my Argos pinny today. I love it. It reaches below my knees and is a curtain weight fabric.

And for such a tiny thing they are so painful!

allthegoldicouldeat · 16/05/2026 13:04

Argos will be puzzling over sales of these pinnies soaring.

Muffinmam · 16/05/2026 14:05

Sir, that is a night gown.

If you’re wanting something to wear around the house and not look like a nanna then I suggest something from here:

www.linenconnections.com.au

These aren’t dressing gowns. They are kimonos that you can also wear to the beach. You will look fabulous. You can wear in summer and also in winter (over a hoodie) when you’re around the house.

Alternatively, there are Japanese Linen Cross Back Kitchen Cooking Aprons that you can buy. I’ve noticed some women wear them around the house (not just when cooking). You can buy them on Etsy in lots of different fabrics. Don’t buy from Amazon. Once you’ve searched for some Japanese aprons thr algorithm will find you and suggest other sellers.

Yes practical workwear and fabulous loungewear are two different things,

imip · 16/05/2026 18:41

My ‘housecoat’ is a denim jumpsuit from Monkii! I would like one of the pink type they wear in Glossier.

Calloja23 · 16/05/2026 19:27

I think Hilda Ogden wore one in Coronation Street from what you describe. She also had her hair in a scarf tied at the front of her head on top. Lol

TheStorksAccomplice · 17/05/2026 08:02

I have one similar to this that I bought in M&S over 50 years ago. Still wear it and mine is in a silky polyester type fabric that a) no cat hair attaches to and b) it doesn't pluck with an extended claw. And very flattering to a less than perfect figure. Price is eye watering on this Etsy one but I thought you'd like the print https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1672161461/mod-cats-mid-century-caftan-in?ls=a&ref=listing_page_ad_row-1&plkey=EuCeIkwBo9u_gkSAYZqNOx4WStf4%3ALTd15a745523ee0c9aca5d159c6c608da165019ad2&listing_id=1672161461&listing_slug=mod-cats-mid-century-caftan-in

That looks more suitable for wafting about looking glam than doing housework and protecting your clothes from animal hair. It depends on what purpose you want it to serve.

I’d love an old fashioned housecoat like my gran wore, none of the links show anything like it alas. It was more like a pinny but that went all the round if that makes sense?

Those tabard style ones might be making a comeback! A lady on the radio was saying how she bought one when in Portugal (I think), as she hasn't seen them in this country for years, but she remembered her nan wearing one and thinking how practical they are. Anyway, she got home and all her friends wanted one, so she ordered a job lot from abroad, has been selling them here in the UK. They are very practical. I also remember my nan wearing one snd I always wear a pinny for cooking, but I don't wear anything for cleaning and I should really. Ruined lots of tops with bleach splashes or just by leaning against things like the worktops when cleaning which has caused little holes in things, very annoying.

Babyboomer50 · 17/05/2026 12:39

My mother had one in 50 & 60's and it was called a brunch coat . I think they are a great idea .

It’s cheaper than what the OP posted! Doing housework doesnt mean having to look dull!

I would think the loose sleeves and floaty fabric would get in the way but each to their own.

I imagine that fabric getting very tatty pretty quickly if there are pets in the house (which is the original point of the thread).
