Housecoat

Not stylish AT ALL but I have finally found a housecoat after months of searching. I have a white cat with longish fur and a black cat so everything I wear in the house is instantly a cat fur magnet and I have spent a fortune on sticky rollers and invariably go out looking like a furry mess....lovely.
I had given up hope of ever finding one. I remember my grandmother wearing one round the house. She was incredibly stylish and well dressed and would never have exposed her nice clothes to children, animals or housework but would take it off if she was going out or expecting visitors.
I think they are due for a comeback 😀

Looks like a hospital gown! Don't you just have 'round the house' clothes?

My husband calls a dressing gown a housecoat. I think it's quite a good term for it!

I was imagining something a lot more glamorous than that link though, from what the OP described! I was imaging more of a thin coatigan/longline wrap cardigan.

Is he from Dublin?

No, he's Welsh, but has spent a lot of time in Ireland, County Cork Also says 'ye' lot instead of 'you' 😊

Try TKMaxx. They have lots of unusual gowns you don't see anywhere else, it's where I got mine. I started wearing a housecoat years ago from when I lived in Spain. Spanish women were fanatical about keeping their work clothes smart and as soon as they came home would change into a "bata".

Happyjoe · 12/05/2026 18:43

It's a nightie isn't it? Anyway, pleased your pleased OP.

Yaaas but ideally I want a pink gingham one 😁

Try one of the ‘workwear’ sites..
the quality is usually very good.

PashaMinaMio · 12/05/2026 19:07

Your “housecoat” is very feminine but looks like a dressing gown.

Personally I like a kaftan. Loads on Amazon. I have winter weight ones & summer ones. Some silky, some cotton/poly mix.

Don’t look like dressing gowns.

Ideal for answering the door, stepping out to fetch something from the car or bins.

Mine are stylish, some plain some patterned. Great on holiday.

What about something like this apron? It's the same front and back and has little ties on the side

In the North East Housecoat is the word for dressing gown (DD studied and lived there)
Couldn't open the link for some reason.
When I was growing up lots of older ladies wore full cotton aprons ( pinnies) over their clothes during the day and removed it if visitors arrived.

I've lived in the northeast my whole life and I can assure you I've never once heard anyone call a dressing gown a housecoat.

They're not the same thing. A housecoat doesn't look like a dressing gown, it looks like a thin coat you wear over your clothes.

mdinbc · 12/05/2026 20:33

I call my robe/dressing gown a housecoat. I'm west coast Canadian. I'm not really sure what others here call them, but if you look on-line they are all called robes. Mine is thin jersey with 3/4 sleeves so can be thrown on top of whatever I'm wearing to protect it.

When my children were small, I got up and dressed before them, popped my housecoat overtop to get their breakfast and ready for school or daycare.

I’d love an old fashioned housecoat like my gran wore, none of the links show anything like it alas. It was more like a pinny but that went all the round if that makes sense?

They are imposdible to find and I needed sleeves also.

My neighbour wears housecoats.
shes 90 & obsessed with cleaning 🤣

if you like it, you wear it op. Glad you’ve found what you were look for at long last.

AlwaysSometimesNever · 12/05/2026 22:19

I put in an apron over work clothes and store/wash everything inside out.
I used to have a proper 50s housecoat and it was great. Got too fat for it however 🤣

Yes I do but Im popping in and out of the house all the time and dont want to have to keep changing my outfit. I needed something I can just take off and go.

I long for one of the 'housecoats' seen in old films, often black and white films. They were floor length, had wide shoulders and were very glamorous, but were definitely 'round the house' clothes worn when smoking a cigarette in a holder and knocking back the sherry.
If anyone knows where to get one like that I would be really grateful!

luckymumandnowluckygranny · 13/05/2026 00:15

I have to agree with the Nora Batty/Hilda Ogden/dinner lady** references (headscarf and rollers optional) and wouldn't even let a cat see me in one of these. I do love the Moon and Mellow one but it's out of stock in my size. What about a (semi) respectable tracksuit you only wear in the house?
**I do realise that I am so old none of you will know who these people are....

Japanese style pinny
https://amzn.eu/d/0gD15RE7

I've got a pattern to make a calf length one but haven't got round to it yet

I got one like that from Dunhelm and I love it. Wear it for cooking and cleaning and anything messy. It’s much nicer to wear than an apron with ties, it’s like an overdress, and gives more coverage at the sides and back. I like that it looks functional and minimal rather than fussy. And the pockets are great.

And has been admired on the odd occasion someone else has seen me in it.
