Housecoat

Not stylish AT ALL but I have finally found a housecoat after months of searching. I have a white cat with longish fur and a black cat so everything I wear in the house is instantly a cat fur magnet and I have spent a fortune on sticky rollers and invariably go out looking like a furry mess....lovely.
I had given up hope of ever finding one. I remember my grandmother wearing one round the house. She was incredibly stylish and well dressed and would never have exposed her nice clothes to children, animals or housework but would take it off if she was going out or expecting visitors.
I think they are due for a comeback 😀

Many, many years ago I went to a party dressed as Hilda Ogden in a proper sleeveless, wraparound pinny. How witty, I thought Hmm. Now I just wish I'd kept the pinny.

I've ordered the Argos one.

I reckon it’ll be better quality than my dunelm one. It’s okay but it’s not Sanderson.

Yaaas but ideally I want a pink gingham one 😁

Would you be interested in a pink gigham bikini by Janer Reger circa 1960? Perhaps not.

Torchout · 14/05/2026 18:54

I remember housecoat as being quilted and button up from neck to shins. They were worn as much to keep you warm in an unheated house as to keep your clothes clean

Thats a shame. The Dunelm one looked as if it would be quite substantial fabric. I'm picking mine up tomorrow.

That's a lab coat, just not in the usual white.

I will raise you two harrier bassets their hair is so fine. I half fill my Dyson every day

Sorry think I’m on the wrong thread 😀

Yes, looks like a brown lab coat to me.

MiaKulper · 14/05/2026 21:50

@selffellatingouroborosofhate , it's a warehouse coat.

Other than colour, it is indistinguishable from a lab coat. It's almost as though multiple industries have the need to keep stuff off workers' clothes.

Why are you telling me things I already know?

The OP is looking for a sleeved overgarment that will protect her clothes from cat fur. You posted a link to a suitable garment under a name I didn't recognise. I supplied the name that I know that garment by. The OP, and any other reader, now knows that the terms "lab coat", "coverall", "overall", and "warehouse coat" will find the type of garment you linked to, but that the colour may vary depending upon the name used. Between us, we have assisted the OP.

I would argue that lab coats in white are the easiest colour to find if OP is indifferent to colour, but then I wear one frequently myself and know where to get them from.

You would argue with anyone, it seems.

It's just a coat to keep your regular clothes clean.

I'm arguing?

It's just a different name for the same thing.

FlamingoFloss · 15/05/2026 04:36

I’ve seen these making a come back on instagram. Lots of ladies are making them

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 15/05/2026 06:42

Yes! I was only saying this the other day. The amount of different jobs I need to do in the space of day requires different outfits. I’ve seen these at the local market. You can get tabards too with big pockets for your fags and dusters! 😉 They had it right back then. Some of my clothes have been ruined when I’ve had a quick clean in them after work.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 15/05/2026 06:48

So gorgeous but I wouldn’t want to get it dirty which is the point I guess.

oh it’s fine for the price and I love it.

It’s well made but the fabric isn’t super substantial. It’s quite linen-like with a slightly loose weave, although it’s actually cotton. Heavier than shirting but not as heavy as canvas.

But it’s washed fine and I have no complaints.

I was thinking of this too. Brown ‘shop coat’. These are sometimes called overalls.

edit I see you’ve added their various names above.

different names for the same things, but also same name for different things.

eg overall can mean warehouse coat, or it can mean what I’d call dungerees, or what I’d call boiler suits, or the kind of wraparound apron that Mrs Overall wore.

Workworkwok · 15/05/2026 08:24

Sorry most of my edit above was meant to be in reply to @selffellatingouroborosofhate
