Is this velvet dress too wintery for a May party?

I’m after opinions please. I’m posting a pic of a dress I have in my wardrobe. I’m going to a 50th birthday party on Saturday. Nothing else I currently own or have ordered to try looks good or makes me feel nice. My question is, do you think a velvet dress is too wintery looking for May? That’s it. That’s my dilemma. Help! Am I overthinking this? 🤣

That's a dress for Christmas. I would say too wintry for May.

MrsDuskTilldawn · 30/04/2026 17:58

Aww man. That’s what I thought. 😭 Might try a fetching bin bag instead. After all you can get scented ones. 🤣🤣🤣

Wear what you like! I think it's a lovely looking dress. I think it's rather silly to say that a dress belongs to a season! Yes it helps to match the weather - so you don't under or overheat! But there's no such thing as saying a dress equates to a season. If it fits and makes you feel good then wear it!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 30/04/2026 18:03

Too wintery.

Agree that you can wear whatever you like, but its still too wintery.

Arlanymor · 30/04/2026 18:08

@MrsDuskTilldawn I wore this to an awards ceremony last May: https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/teal-velvet-jumpsuit/

No one told me it was too wintery and it's velvet... Maybe I don't know the rules of fashion?!

Or maybe it's just a nice outfit that you wear and feel comfortable in? Whenever!

Wear what makes you feel gorgeous - I think that should be the only rule of fashion.

scotsmumofteens · 30/04/2026 18:09

Absolutely you can wear it ! I don’t have seasonal clothes at all lol

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2026 18:10

I think it’d be fine if it was a chilly day but the forecast is pretty warm I think.

maftaz · 30/04/2026 18:11

I like it, and if it's an evening gig it will work. I'd wear pale pink with that. Gorgeous colour.

Depends on where you live though, right? It's due to be 13 degrees and raining where I am on the Welsh coast.

That’s sleeveless though - so although it’s velvet it probably wouldn’t be too warm in May. I’ve worn a velvet short sleeved dress outside of winter.

ForPinkDuck · 30/04/2026 18:13

If the party is at night then youll get away with it.

Well I'm menopausal so frankly even a Tarzan pouch is too much clothing for me at times! I just think this idea that velvet = winter is silly - not saying that you said that. I also think any fabric doesn't = only wear in this season.

I also wore a velvet duster jacket over the whole ensemble!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 30/04/2026 18:16

An evening party with the rainy forecast that we have here for Saturday? Totally fine.

If it was a garden party in the very hot weather we had here last weekend, I think it would be slightly out of place, and also uncomfortable to wear as you’d get hot.

MrsDuskTilldawn · 30/04/2026 18:17

Definitely forecast to be chilly and rainy though it’s an absolutely glorious today. Thank you all for replying. I think I’ll play with shoes and accessories and then decide. I am glad I’m not the only one who wouldn’t rule it out categorically. Although I obviously get the answers saying no since my head is saying the same. My heart is saying wear it! 🤣💚

Gorgeous outfit!

ETA: It’s an evening party and weather forecast is less than favourable hehe. Think I’ll have another look in the shops tomorrow - maybe something will appeal. But I do love my dress. I don’t think there are enough occasions to where it lol

I match clothes to the weather not the calendar. It's fine, especially if it's an evening do. Nice dress.

Thanks love! I honestly felt a million dollars in it!

Accessorise to the hilt and enjoy your lovely dress! Have a fabulous time.

is it available in a less Christmassy colour if you really like it? I do associate reds and greens with Christmas plus the velvet does make it seem wintery to me. Having said that, I overthink everything and then go to places and wonder why I got so stressed so if you like it and feel good in it, then wear it.

Shinyhappyapple · 30/04/2026 18:28

That’s a gorgeous dress. I wouldn’t normally wear velvet outside of Autumn/Christmas season, but I possibly would if I was going to the theatre or a posh restaurant and it was a fairly chilly Spring day. For a party, it’s nice as it’s dressy, but are you likely to be dancing? It maybe a bit too warm.

TheChosenTwo · 30/04/2026 18:32

I go by the weather and not what month the calendar says.
People plan 6 months in advance for a July wedding that turns out to be 16 degrees and rainy - I think the shade of green lends itself well to Christmas parties but you can wear green all year! Also I’m always bloody freezing so am often in thick material with arms covered so I’d wear it to a rainy party at the weekend.

go for it, anyone shivering in overly summery clothes may be green with envy.

In the words of Sheldon Cooper: there are infinite universes and I assure you, in none of them do I dance. 🤣🤣
I’m the bop your head along whilst sipping a nice drink type. 🙈 I’ll leave the dancing to the young guns. I’ve reached fifty. I love music but never liked dancing, so now I just don’t anymore lol

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 19:15

It is a lovely dress for any time of year.
A jewel tone velvet dress in a flattering cut is so much better than a ditsy floral viscose sack.

TracyVer · 30/04/2026 19:55

I love the dress but I think it's more for autumn/winter.
