Is this velvet dress too wintery for a May party?

I’m after opinions please. I’m posting a pic of a dress I have in my wardrobe. I’m going to a 50th birthday party on Saturday. Nothing else I currently own or have ordered to try looks good or makes me feel nice. My question is, do you think a velvet dress is too wintery looking for May? That’s it. That’s my dilemma. Help! Am I overthinking this? 🤣

I think it depends on the weather. It could be freezing. May is very unpredictable. Gorgeous dress either way.

Bristolandlazy · 30/04/2026 20:40

I think it's fine for an evening do, it's giving colder weather vibes but doesn't shout Christmas to me. You should wear it, it's lovely.

SapphireSeptember · 30/04/2026 21:06

There's me wearing velvet in all but the hottest of weather...

Wear the damn dress! It's gorgeous! Christmassy clothes (to me) are anything that actually has something related to Christmas on it. Not something red or green or velvet.

curious79 · 30/04/2026 21:28

It’s so cold at night. I would definitely wear it. I’m going to a party tomorrow night and have a long sleeved dress.

MrsDuskTilldawn · 30/04/2026 21:41

Thank you so much for all your replies! 💚 I’m going with heart over head and wear it.

It's lovely but it's a winter dress, perfect for Christmas parties. I couldn't wear it in May personally I just wouldn't feel happy.

Legssses · 30/04/2026 21:55

Unhelpful, but where did you get it?

I would probably see if could get something in a similar cut but in a different material or colour.

ETA : oops just clicked on the pic and noticed it's Boden!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 30/04/2026 22:02

@MrsDuskTilldawnI own a nearly identical one from Boden and it’s not a May dress. It’s quite heavy velvet and is definitely winter weight. Boden has some dresses in their sale and I’d go for something lighter in weight and definitely not a Christmas party dress. They’ve got some pretty good ones in my view.

SonyaLoosemore · 30/04/2026 22:07

Fine on a cool day but you will boil in velvet if it's hot.

I love the dress but I think it's more for autumn/winter.

If it is cotton velvet or silk velvet, you are fine for temperature. Synthetic velvet, not so much.

LittleMyLabyrinth · 30/04/2026 23:07

I think it could be springy in a Beltane-whimsigoth-LoreenaMcKennittMummer'sDance sort of way. Go for it.

Yes! I would be tempted to accessorize with lilies or daisies.

Divebar2021 · 30/04/2026 23:49

Well speaking strictly for me I wouldn’t feel comfortable in it. Regardless of temperature I’d feel “ off”. Velvet has associations with autumn / winter, candle light , fireplaces, Christmas etc and really once February was out I’d want something more “ Fresh start” When I was a student in the US I went to a spring formal and my mum sent me a velvet dress to wear and although it was a lovely dress I stood out like a sore thumb.

Formal dress in the US is very different.
I like pictures of British New Romantics from the 1990s, and some 1970s glam.
This dress is very Midsummer Night's Dream /Shakespeare in the park.

What a lovely dress OP & it's no wonder your heart says yes. I would feel the same. I also agree with the posters who say it has a winter vibe & with heating on in a venue I'd melt although obviously just my thoughts & your decision.

Gardenimp · Yesterday 00:03

I wear that this weekend here. I don't think the switch to Summer dresses has happened yet. The only reason I wouldn't is if it suddenly got so warm I'd be uncomfortable.

Moveoverdarlin · Yesterday 00:09

Sorry I don’t think it’s at all appropriate for a May event. I think a large part of looking stylish is dressing for the season.

If it is cotton velvet or silk velvet, you are fine for temperature. Synthetic velvet, not so much.

It's 97% cotton with just a tiny bit of elastane. I'm amazed that so many posters think velvet is only for Christmas.

Don't know where OP is but where I am Saturday's weather is predicted to be pouring all day, 12° at 8 p.m with an 80% chance of rain. That's not weather for a summer dress.

Needaglowup · Yesterday 00:23

its A Christmas dress .. sorry OP

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · Yesterday 00:37

There is no such thing as a 'Christmas dress' apart from the ones featuring reindeer, etc.

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · Yesterday 00:39

If only people dressed more Tudor and less Bridgerton...

WhoAteAllTheMincePiez · Yesterday 06:38

What’s the weather like on Saturday? If it’s cooler wear it!

Charlenedickens · Yesterday 07:05

I love velvet it’s had a real resurgence, I’ve a couple of velvet blazers, and a velvet waistcoat, which I wear with jeans and nothing under neath. Velvet is very current, however it’s the cut and colour thays key, and red and green velvet screams winter and Christmas.

My two blazers are navy (me snd em) and a cognac colour (Bella Freud), the waistcoat (me and em) a very deep expresso, I wear them year round, because nothing under the waistcoat, or a silk shell top under the blazers, keep them season appropriate, if they were green or red, I would keep them to winter or Xmas I think.

I think that dress looks a very soft velvet, and I don’t think I’d do a double take if I saw you, but it does look more a winter dress, rather than spring. It’s the fact it’s a dress, and it’s green makes it much harder to make season appropriate
