Is this velvet dress too wintery for a May party?

I’m after opinions please. I’m posting a pic of a dress I have in my wardrobe. I’m going to a 50th birthday party on Saturday. Nothing else I currently own or have ordered to try looks good or makes me feel nice. My question is, do you think a velvet dress is too wintery looking for May? That’s it. That’s my dilemma. Help! Am I overthinking this? 🤣

Ummm don't let the goths hear you all saying that velvet is for winter only 😁❤️

I get cold even in summer. I would 100% wear this velvet dress in May! With ruby red lipstick, dramatic hair and sunglasses, lots of glittering rings, seamed stockings, and some sort of theatrically weird handbag.

@HamelaIs the op into cos play? It’s not fancy dress is it? Also this party is presumably inside? Not on a breezy hill! It’s a party - not a working from home effort at fashion where no one cares. I would think the op had it left over from the winter - and she probably has. It’s heavy velvet and just odd in May for people not into seemed stockings and red lips!

gorgeous dress (is it Finery?) but the colour and the fabric and wintery and I think you would be hot if you wore it now.

midlifeattheoasis · Yesterday 16:15

Yes

Twoshoesnewshoes · Yesterday 16:24

Yes imo - velvets and deep jewel colours are autumn/winter, and get packed away early March.

allthegoldicouldeat · Yesterday 16:46

It’s a lovely dress and the scantily clad guests will be jealous of you when they’re shivering in their summer frocks “ because it’s May”.

Bigcat25 · Yesterday 16:58

Love the dress! I think it's fine. I hate the idea of reserving something for just a short season.

😂😂 It was merely my opinion, which I am free to voice.. .....it's an outfit, lol, it's not that deep.

Like hell are they! Pastels make me look dead, I'm all into jewel tones (and black) as they suit me. Velvet is for all year round. I've worn lighter weight velvet clothes in the summer.

@Hamela I'm a Goth. 😁

A velvet dress is for life, not just for Christmas! 😁

aWeeCornishPastie · Yesterday 17:27

Defo more autumn winter look

IDontHateRainbows · Yesterday 17:30

Im quite seasonal with my clothing do wouldn't wear that in summer.

Juicyjp · Yesterday 19:11

If you feel comfortable in it then wear it, are you going to be outdoors or inside?

Wear what you like! I think it's a lovely looking dress. I think it's rather silly to say that a dress belongs to a season! Yes it helps to match the weather - so you don't under or overheat! But there's no such thing as saying a dress equates to a season. If it fits and makes you feel good then wear it!

I’d be checking the weather forecast. Unless it’s definitely going to be warm, I’d certainly wear it. But then I always tend to feel chilly anyway.
May can sometimes be quite chill and wintry. As Will S said, ‘Cold winds may shake the darling buds of May….’

Yes, that’s a winter fabric and colour I’m sorry to say.
That said if it’s dull and cold and the party is indoors you may be able to get away with it. If it’s bright outside that won’t work though.

EdithBond · Today 08:32

I think you should wear it. You love it and feel good in it.

Accessorise with pale or bright pink to give the green a verdant spring vibe, rather than a winter ‘holly and ivy’ vibe.

It’s low cut, so doesn’t look too wintery, and you could pull the elasticated sleeves up to the elbow.

Scarves and pashminas are hot this spring. So you could either tie a pink (possibly flowery) silky scarf at your neck (tied on the side - tres chic) or wear a pashmina. TK Maxx have a v good range right now if you have one near you.

Would also look sexy for evening with a long pendant that ends just below the ‘v’ near your boobs, as well as layers of necklace higher up the ‘v’.

I’m not a Goth but wear velvet and jewel colours (to accessorise black) year round. I never wear pastel.

Velvet looks boho in summer mixed with layers of silks and patterns.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · Today 11:33

This May doesn't look to be earning the right to demand clothes that are spring appropriate, so I think it's fine!

Cherrytree86 · Today 13:37

yes. Plus it’s awful imo

Did you miss that the op already owns it, or did you just not care?

Yes, I did miss that - I thought op was wanting opinions on whether or not to buy it. Sorry
