Are we now into summer clothes season? Have you done your wardrobe swap?

It’s gorgeous and sunnny here. I just did my wardrobe swap. A pretty unexciting affair which involves moving tweed, velvet and roll necks out and short sleeve blouses, shorts and sundresses in. Apologies if this brings on a spell of unexpected dreadful weather.

Are people out and about in summer clothes where you are? Cambridge yesterday was a weird mix of barn jackets, beanies, shorts and sandals.

I’m meeting a friend for lunch in Central London today and really want to dig out the off white silk/linen trousers I’ve been yearning to wear (with a light navy knit) but am still a bit traumatised by going to Westfield last early summer in a pastel shirt dress and truly not understanding how every other man, woman and child knew still to wear jeans.

What are we thinking?

Last autumn I put my summer clothes away in two boxes, and I’ve just swapped one of the boxes for clothes I know I won’t wear for at least four months. So my summer tops for wearing with jeans, my skirts and my summer dressses with short sleeves are in the wardrobe ready for some nice weather. The other box has strappy sundresses and jumpsuits that I’ll only wear when it’s properly hot! They can wait a bit.

Everything just stays in my wardrobe all year round. If you have to do a wardrobe swap, you probably have too many clothes.

CrustyBread1977 · Yesterday 07:06

I always do this in the Easter and October holidays. My cardigans stay year round though!

MiddleAgedDread · Yesterday 07:08

I had to deice my car yesterday morning!

Pabbel · Yesterday 07:09

Nope thermal vest still on here !

DeafLeppard · Yesterday 07:11

Yes! Did this over Easter (but perhaps a bit premature). I must be near you, also in Cambridge. Wind was vicious yesterday!

Got some new sandals and a slip skirt I want to wear but it might be a bit chilly. I’ve even shaved my legs and painted my toenails 😁

RampantIvy · Yesterday 07:12

It's not quite warm enough here, but I wore my new linen trousers the other day and have been wearing my cotton cargoes.

I can't wait for it to be warm enough for dresses and sandals.

ItReallyDoesntMatterAnymore · Yesterday 07:17

I do an in-between swap around Easter, away goes the heavy knits, velvet and more heavy/structured fabrics, and in goes stripy tops, brighter coloured blouses, lighter knits/cardigans and the slightly cropped jeans. Boots swapped for trainers, vans and converse.

Strappy dresses, vest tops, shorts and linen and sandals are yet to come out in late May/early June.

StickStuck · Yesterday 07:44

I did my swap a few weeks ago and regret it. I’m in London and wearing tights and cardigans still!

StickStuck · Yesterday 07:44

OP the afternoons are ok. The mornings and evenings are chilly. So a lunch in more summery wear is do-able.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 07:45

I’m thinking of doing this but it’s forecast wind and rain for next week.
I’ll start by putting my deepest winter clothes away, ie warmest coats, thick chunky jumpers etc. I’m not sure I’ll be getting my vests and sundresses out quite yet though.

SausageRoll2020 · Yesterday 07:47

It's 22c here today but dropping down to 12c for bank holiday Monday, you might need to keep out some light layers for a few more weeks yet.

Owly11 · Yesterday 07:49

Nope. I have moved out of thick cords and velvet into jeans and jumpers. It will be a while yet before the summer clothes come out.

Same here, we’re probably classed as underprivileged by the rest of MN

changedglasscat · Yesterday 08:23

I did this last week, it brought on the rain and cold winds! Like you I’m so up for the white linen and some gorgeous flowing t shirts but I keep putting the jeans and jumpers back on! I’m giving it another few weeks - enjoy London OP xx

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 08:41

It’s too early for linen here in London, the wind would have cut right through you yesterday

it’s got to be over 20 in my head for linen, and not just over 20 degrees for 5 minutes at 3pm

I have however swapped my coats over, all heavy coats are now in the wardrobe and my short light wool, cotton, linen jackets all out in preparation. I wore a light wool Chanel style blazer yesterday with a scarf, was just warm enough.

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 08:42

I have also retired the velvet, all velvet trousers and coats as they are in rich winter colours and the fabric is too Christmassy for April/May

StickStuck · Yesterday 08:44

OP my young adult son has just headed off to work in central London. In a shirt and no coat or jumper 😱 He told me in a withering manner that it’s 20° C today and he is not carrying a coat around all day. I still think he’s a fool.

Ah stop that now with the truth bombs 😃

NOTANUM · Yesterday 08:50

London is still chilly enough - single digits in the morning and rising to 16-20. It’s not enough to dump suit jackets or light coats.

People here are layering - jackets, trenches, with a casual wrap over a dress or with smart trousers. I haven’t seen any linen yet!

Tuhafeni · Yesterday 09:02

I think you are all right about it being too cold for my lovely linen trousers even in London. I’m going for culottes, loafers and a lightweight cashmere sweater. DH went into work yesterday in just a shirt and said it was freezing by the river.

Oh well, another month and it will be sweltering, I hope.

It’s only April — where I am (southeast) we’re still at that annoying in-between stage where whatever you wear, at one point you will be too cold and at another point you will be too hot. I’m still wearing socks with my Birkenstocks and getting under an electric blanket in the evenings. Definitely not time for sundresses yet. In another two or three weeks though…

BlackCat14 · Yesterday 09:07

In Manchester and I’ve been wearing sandals and strappy summer dresses for the last few days, and sitting outside as much as I can!

muddyford · Yesterday 09:10

Here in the southwest it's windy and not particularly warm. Wearing jeans and Fair jersey. I usually swap the first weekend of May but perhaps not this year.

Theraininspainishere · Yesterday 09:11

Next week it’s down to 10-14C for much of the country.
