Does foundation or base layer of tinted cream that you can't see exist for older skin?

Oricolt · 29/04/2026 18:49

I'm 48. I look older. I am fair and freckly with wrinkles and visible pores.

I wear either no makeup or just a bit of mascara.

I would quite like a layer on my face that sort of evens up the colour and helps me look less haggard. I won't be doing layers of product, or buffing with a pointy egg shaped sponge.

Does such a thing exist? I tried something but I could see it on my face like a paste. I know it's normal to be able to see foundation, especially on older skin, but I don't want that on my face.

Is foundation for putting under makeup?

Or can I just wear it without other makeup?

If you apply a medium to high coverage foundation without applying and kind of makeup afterwards you’re fairly likely to end up looking pale or washed out.

Which is why most people tend to apply products such as blush, bronzer, highlighter etc. If you find an actual skin tint or low coverage foundation product that works with your skin you probably won’t need to apply those products because your natural colours (rosiness, a little blotchiness etc.) will still shine through.

but as a pp said: it’s really about finding something that works for your skin! So I personally would take some of the recommendations on this thread and get yourself to the your nearest store with a beauty counter (and samples!).

Oh Christ it DOES settle into wrinkles! Avoid avoid for more mature skin.

I don’t have mature skin (yet) and I quite like it when I have an oily skin period. But whenever I deal with dryness or even just non-oily skin? Eh, it’s suddenly surprisingly iffy imo! So I was a bit surprised when I saw it being recommended for mature skin.

But there are various mature skin types (such as mature oily skin) so would might be a factor as well.🤷‍♀️

Please do, I am currently in Spain and would like to try and find it.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser for me, evens up skin tone, looks natural and lets my freckles show through, so many lighter products (BB/CC creams that I've tried) make them look a bit grey and grubby. I went to Space NK for colour matching.

Apologies for the late reply, it’s the new serum foundation in Mercadona - I get it in the lightest colour and it’s amazing. Very sheer, dewy, long lasting and only €7 🤩

Erborian CC Cream. Similar skin to yours and it works a treat.

This 100% I am fair and freckly with awful sebaceous filaments on my nose that I hate so much and erborian cc cream just gives me the perfect natural looking coverage but smooths my stupid pores.

I also have trouble with sebaceous filaments. I've been using the Hero Mighty Patches from Boots and they actually work. I was nervous about them at first because, as I said earlier, I have a lot of little broken capillaries. But they are really gentle and draw the gunk out. My pores are still visible but they don't have the clogs and they look smaller. I bought one packet of the Vue Swiss ones as well, but the Boots ones are just as effective.

I have eborian CC water. It’s like a light gel with little white dots in it that when you apply it just blur and light provide a tiny bit of evening out.

I’m pretty sure when you order on line you can also choose a free sample so if you get the sample of what you are buying you can test it before you open the product and therefore return it if you don’t like it 😊

It lasts ages! Doesn’t have any sunscreen in it though.

Oh wow - big eborian fan not heard of this will check it out

Iwanttobeafraser · 02/05/2026 08:32

I always think a good skincare regime is important - any product on your skin will look bad if your skin is blotchy/uneven/dry etc. As I've got older, I've found that the most usefl thing is keeping my skin smooth. Retonol, vitamin c and really realyl good cleansers have made a huge difference.

Also, I know you say you don't want a sponge but honestly, applying foundation or other complexion products with a good brush makes all the difference. If you put a bit o fthe product on the back of your hand, then swirl the brush over it and really work the product into the brush then use that to apply the foundation, it goes on much more smoothly and looks much ligher and more natural.

I use the Origins Ginzing tinted moisturiser for days when I want the tiniest amount of coverage. It’s a beautiful product, only one “shade” as it blends into your own skin tone and it has lots of natural ingredients. I wear it for morning dog walks.
For more coverage but still avoiding the heavy/cakey look, I use my usual foundation (IT cosmetics CC) but the smallest amount.
Using much less foundation has been a game changer. I still look “finished” but natural too.

Forty85 · 02/05/2026 10:08

I absolutely love tropics tinted moisturiser. It goes on white then adjusts to your skin tone and evens it out and just gives a really healthy glow (I'm not a tropics ambassador just love their products).

So @Oricolt i should perhaps apologise but I’m not going to… I have found this thread so potentially useful that I have made a spreadsheet of recommendations with number of votes and an indicative price. Only trouble is that I’m having difficulty posting it. However, you may be interested to know the ‘winners’!

Bear in mind I have given what appears to be a full price of the smallest bottle/tube, as per a brief search. There are often big offers out there, plus extras thrown in (see below).

Top recommendation: Erborian CC cream with 17 votes! This is way out in front of any other. About £38. It also had several thumbs down but I haven’t counted negative mentions.

Runners up, all with 4 votes:
Glossier perfecting skin tint, about £30
Nivea tinted moisturiser, about £6
Chanel water fresh tint, about £50

Cheapest mentioned: Aldi Lacura cc cream, about £4
Most expensive mentioned: Victoria Beckham The Foundation Drops, about £104

For me, I never normally wear any foundation like this, partly because I hate the cakey/pore emphasising look too. I’m getting married next year and wondered if I could get something that I liked. So I went to Boots armed with this spreadsheet and tried three of the higher end products. Sadly I did t try the No 7 option which I wish I had. However, I really liked the Chanel water tint - at first I wasn’t sure but it actually comes with a brush, which I also wanted to buy, and that made it better value for me. And with a brush I really liked it - made a huge difference.

Thanks everyone!

I recently bought the Luxe colour changing one. I will add that there may have been wine involved (it came up as a suggestion on FB!) and I didn’t read the reviews first!
When I read the reviews, I resigned myself to it being rubbish. But, when it arrived, I tried it and it’s brilliant! Very light, doesn’t settle into lines, gives a lovely dewy finish. Looks like my skin, but better. A few people have asked me what I’ve done differently and ordered it themselves. And at £28 for two bottles and a brush, good value.

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 02/05/2026 19:13

No. 7 intelligent foundation is very good for everyday. It blends with your own skin colour, is not heavy, just gives a healthy glow with sheer/medium coverage.

Mumofoneandone · 03/05/2026 05:35

Have a look at LFF - look fabulous forever. It's a make up range for older women!

The right applicator is so important isn’t it.

i use a brush with the Victoria Beckham one, she recommends fingers or brush, I tried with a blender and she’s right, the brush works much better, you just smooth it over then it sinks in.

where as i used to use the tilbury flawless filter one, and needed a beauty blender for thay as it’s such a heavy foundation compared to the Beckham one.

I think the heavier the foundation, a blender works better, the lighter, a brush.

you can tell by how runny it is, how heavy and cakey it is, for example the Beckham one you just drip onto your face. And if you squeeze too much out it will run,

so if it’s not runny you know it’s a heavy foundation and use a beauty blender, if it is runny use fingertips or a foundation brush.

but for me the condition of your skin is critical. I apply my skin care when I get up. But don’t put my make up on till later.

i Love a good spreadsheet! Thanks for sharing the results.

Just to add- Eborian do a travel sized version for about £19 if anyone is nervous about trying. I wish more brands did travel sized versions of stuff as I am
more likely to try rather than invest in a full sized and hate it.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 03/05/2026 09:31

I think for a lot of older women (and I'm 20 years older than you) base products don't sit well because we have 'peach fuzz' hair on our face.

Using a dermaplaner (a lightweight mini razor, available at Amazon, Boots, TK Maxx and many other places) will remove these tiny hairs and any dead skin and give a smoother surface so any tinted moisturiser or foundation can blend in seamlessly . They cost about £2, are multi use and are an absolute game changer.

Nanda66 · 03/05/2026 09:56

Revolution Silk Serum foundation is very good. For lighter coverage, like a tinted moisturiser, their Superdewy SPF30 skin tint is lovely. Both amazing for the price. For holidays I love Trinny BFF, gives lovely sheer coverage and an amazing glow.

Eborian cc isn't runny but is as light as a feather.

It cosmetics CC+ is what you need

Cyclingmummy1 · 03/05/2026 22:16

I bought a brush yesterday. I'm of the sponge application generation then changed to usung my fingers but I went for foundation yesterday (I bought Clarins double serum) and the consultant applied if with a brush. So I bought the brush as well. It looks really smooth but I think I need the blusher as well now 😆

Keen to try the Erborian CC cream but how do I colour match? Is there a counter?

Edit to ask do I use instead of moisturiser cream or after?

Thanks

I was looking at this online as no where has it locally and couldn't figure out which shade. I'm Irish, never tan, blue eyes and was thinking shade 1 or 2. Any advice?

I think you’d be pretty safe with either 1 or 2 as it is light coverage. On the Fenty site there are loads of photos which might help too. It’s very lightweight and natural looking - I’m v happy with it.

I use sunscreen first (instead of moisturiser) then the CC cream. I think you probably could use it without a moisturiser first but I prefer an extra layer.
