Does foundation or base layer of tinted cream that you can't see exist for older skin?

Oricolt · 29/04/2026 18:49

I'm 48. I look older. I am fair and freckly with wrinkles and visible pores.

I wear either no makeup or just a bit of mascara.

I would quite like a layer on my face that sort of evens up the colour and helps me look less haggard. I won't be doing layers of product, or buffing with a pointy egg shaped sponge.

Does such a thing exist? I tried something but I could see it on my face like a paste. I know it's normal to be able to see foundation, especially on older skin, but I don't want that on my face.

I have similar skin to you and I really like the Trinny BFF. It goes on white and then adjusts to your skin tone. I don’t like the feel or look of foundation but this stuff makes it look like my skin but better! For a more budge option on days where it’s just the shopping etc I use the Garnier Glow option which works well. https://www.boots.com/garnier-vitamin-c-daily--uv-glow-40ml-10338988?traffic=paid.shopping&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22629981044&gbraid=0AAAAA-AdmwQbNLY_rbCumbRTVIKkXOCv-&gclid=CjwKCAjw-8vPBhBbEiwAoA39Wk5BjSEm9vjsyAtGKBjJGxGPmqPquQr2R5zVOWjlkhw1j2TOswz46xoC5LAQAvD_BwE

Erborian CC cream. Your skin, but better.

Oricolt · Yesterday 08:51

Okay, so my next question is, how do I get samples? Is that still a thing?

Mammy of these recommendations are quite expensive and I can't afford to buy something and it be wrong.

Do I go into a scary makeup shop and ask for advice? Would I need an appointment? The trouble is they like what's fashionable but I don't really. I want diverging to magically make me look a bit fresher without looking like I'm using a product. I want a unicorn!!

Erborian CC Cream. Similar skin to yours and it works a treat.

Came to recommend this too. It’s what I wear on no makeup days

Bare Minerals complexion rescue

This. Complete game changer. In my 60’s and honestly it’s fabulous.

Go into a Space NK and have a play!

MotherofPearl · Yesterday 08:56

OP, I really rate Origins Ginzeng tinted moisturiser with SPF. I hate the look and feel of foundation but this is a lovely light tinted moisturiser that sinks in and just looks like your normal skin but better and more even.

Recklessismymiddlename · Yesterday 08:59

Meant to put in a link. Some Boots have samples- that’s where I went anyway.

I’m 54 with a bit of rosacea around my cheekbones. I absolutely love this stuff, which I get from Amazon:
https://amzn.eu/d/03AfbdSY

I get it in the Universal colour, which looks dark in the pot but adjusts instantly to my pale skin. You can get small tester tubes as well as the big pot.

It’s supposed to be a substitute for primer and powder as well as giving some coverage. It goes on beautifully smoothly.

I use it sparingly, just in the areas where I want a bit more coverage and to blot my T-zone and it looks totally natural. I wish I’d discovered it years ago.

I know you said you didn’t want to have lots of layers of products . Wondered though if you already had a foundation that suits you , that before you go down the route of trying different ( expensive ) products you try putting on a primer first ? I have dry skin and found as I got older, my foundation wasn’t sitting as well .
I used to use benefit poreless cream - but it was getting really expensive .I think £40 plus for a not very large tube .
Through my teenage daughter I have discovered Elf products - sell at Boots / Amazon / Superdrug etc . I tried their primer and it was a quarter of the price and worked really well .
It is their poreless putty primer - pink small jar . Seems to last me a good few months - only £8.80 at Amazon at the moment . Generally £10-12 . Can put it in on in seconds - good texture don’t find it a faff .

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser. I don't wear make up anymore but for a night out will wear this plus groomed eyebrows and lipstick just to brighten myself up. It just lifts the skin, brightens and smooths, but very natural.

What about a tinted serum?

If you have a Sephora or H Beauty nearby, they are pretty good at giving you a wee sample (2 or 3 applications worth), to try at home. Maybe Space NK do as well; it's just not somewhere I've asked.

IT Cosmetics Nude Glow is my preferred daily coverup at the moment, it’s very natural looking. I’d honestly take a little pot in and squirt a bit in to test. The colours are a bit funny and somehow not sequential so it’s one to test in person at Boots.

Whatever you go for, it’s important to make sure the shade isn’t too light as too-pale foundation just doesn’t work with a face that is losing colour through age. It highlights every line and makes you look quite flat.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · Yesterday 10:24

Also, Estée Lauder, NARS, MAC and Clinique will usually give you a week’s free sample of foundation.

This looks good, I love a tinted sunscreen and didnt know about this one, do you happen to know if it covers redness well?

Bourjois Healthy Mix Glow Tint Essence - amazing

Tinseltrauma · Yesterday 15:22

@wheelywheelyniceIt certainly tones it down! Probably not as much as using a colour corrector then a concealer but I’m too lazy for that !

Touche eclat. You can put it on with a brush. Its very light and looks great on. Doesnt settle into wrinkles or dry skin out.

Oh Christ it DOES settle into wrinkles! Avoid avoid for more mature skin.

Bokeitup · Yesterday 17:01

You don't need loads of recommendations...you just need Eborian cc cream! Listen us all! It's magic stuff!

FlorenceBlack · Yesterday 17:04

Yet another vote for Eborian CC cream, I buy it when it’s on offer on Amazon.

IWouldLikeToKnow · Yesterday 17:10

Have a look at Sculpted by Aimee Cream Cushion foundation. I can’t see it on my skin but yet my skin looks better. It’s an Irish brand but sold in Boots in Ireland so maybe also in Boots UK. I did a colour match on the website and it's a match perfect on my skin.

I find glossier skin tint absolutely brilliant. Im your age with similar skin and it just evens everything out and gives me a bit of a glow. It’s the one product I wouldn’t swap out for another brand.

Agreed. I’m mid 50s so really not Glossier’s target market but this product is perfect for the spring and summer months. I tend to switch to Erborian for autumn and winter as need a bit more coverage.
