Summery clothing without exposing legs

Hi I'm looking for ideas for lower half clothing during the warmer days in summer. Everyone seems to get the shorts out here when the weather gets to 20 degrees but because of a skin condition, I prefer to cover up my legs.

I tend to wear leggings and longer tops but I'm fed up with that, does anyone have any good suggestions?

I would suggest very light fabrics, cotton and linen, either an ankle length skirt or dress, or loose trousers. Lots of wide legged ones at the moment, which are very cool. Do you have a particular style or budget in mind?.

Meredusoleil · 25/04/2026 09:08

I only wear shorts when it hits 30 degrees, so I know what you mean!

Otherwise, I wear chinos, wide legged trousers, culottes or 3/4 length cropped trousers.

Or how about a long floaty skirt? I can't wear them due to chub rub.

PineappleAndGrapefruitLilt · 25/04/2026 09:16

Not really thought much about budget tbh but i like the sound of wide legged trousers.
I'm in Scotland where the sunny days are less frequent so as soon as it splits the sky the shorts come out! We have a saying here, 'Taps aff at 20", or in other words, the beer gut comes out on a warm day 😂

I never show my legs either as i have lots of thread veins. It’s rubbish! I wear light maxi skirts and dresses, long linen trousers or light jeans.

I've never heard that! 😊 I think it's tempting to get sun exposure if you don't get much! I never wear shorts, I've never found a pair that suits me. I wear cotton or linen skirts or wide legged trousers.

PineappleAndGrapefruitLilt · 25/04/2026 09:24

I'm not much of a dress or skirt person but might made the exception on summer days

Linen trousers, quite wide ones. Long linen skirts to, or at lest linen mix.

LynetteScavo · 25/04/2026 09:31

Wide legged trousers or a maxi skirt. Both perfect for hot days, unless you want to ride a bike.

RedRiverShore6 · 25/04/2026 09:32

I bought some of those M&S pull on cotton trousers last year similar to above and some new straight leg chinos from M&S this year. I tend to keep my legs covered as had a couple of BCCs on them and keep them out of the sun

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 25/04/2026 09:33

I don’t expose skin due to being very fair.

My standard summer attire is floaty wide leg trousers. I bought a few from Fatface last year. I wear them usually with a vest top and a long sleeved shirt.

Mumteedum · 25/04/2026 09:34

I like ballon leg/alladin trousers rather than wide leg. I don't like them trailing on the ground... they're all too long these days.

I just bought some lush ones from Tu. Very lightweight and comfy. You can't put anything heavy in the pocket though because they come down at the waist then. The elastic is a bit gentle!

I never understand why people wear shorts when it gets hot ? They restrict around the waist and crotch when you need fresh air in those areas 😂 Stick to a dress.

I agree, very uncomfortable.

MissFenellaPrism · 25/04/2026 09:38

I wear trousers that don't drag on the ground, @Mumteedum I find it irritating and a bit dangerous.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 25/04/2026 09:39

I bought these in Next recently, they are a lovely fit and nice light material:

I'm in Scotland. The last time I wore shorts would have been the last day I was forced to do PE at school. I'm not sure where you are that everyone is wearing shorts but the answer to your question is obviously midi or longer skirts or dresses in fine cotton, linen or even silk.

There are gazillions of these at all price points. What's your budget?

Sorry I see you're not much of a dress person, up to you but dresses and skirts are better in hot weather although you've been given some good trousers suggestions.

Thirded.

WhereTheHellAreMyGlasses · 25/04/2026 09:43

I’m short with a big arse so wide legs look odd on me. I wear tapered, ankle length black linen trousers all summer, with cotton or linen tops. Sometimes I go for a light dress when it’s very hot, midi length which translates to almost maxi on me due to my height. Always wear natural fibres as anything manmade makes me madly hot even when the weather isn’t roasting.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 25/04/2026 09:45

There are the floaty, wide leg drawstring trousers everywhere this year. Be warned, lots are striped and if you don’t style them carefully, look like pyjama bottoms.

M&S chinos are good.

Midi/maxi skirts?

Mumteedum · 25/04/2026 09:47

I also got a lovely comfy dress after posting on here I think last year or so.

Kit and Kaboodle. Some are not my thing, I don't like garish colours and pattern but there's some nice linen ones ..with pockets!

Yes, definitely avoid the pyjama look.

mondaytosunday · 25/04/2026 09:51

Long floaty skirt or loose linen type trousers. Something that’s not clinging to your skin.
