Summery clothing without exposing legs

PineappleAndGrapefruitLilt · 25/04/2026 09:05

Hi I'm looking for ideas for lower half clothing during the warmer days in summer. Everyone seems to get the shorts out here when the weather gets to 20 degrees but because of a skin condition, I prefer to cover up my legs.

I tend to wear leggings and longer tops but I'm fed up with that, does anyone have any good suggestions?

@dudsvilledo you have any links please especially for the dresses?

AltitudeCheck · 25/04/2026 14:56

Harem pants are my summer go to for festivals or beach days where I want to cover my legs but still feel cool.

These are super comfy and on sale too!

I dint have anything that's currently in the shops, but a search on vinted for "toast linen midi dresses" would show you the kind of thing I'm wearing.

I like the look of those. They are very similar to a Lucy & Yak style of trousers (Alexa, I think). I have a cotton pair, which are heavy enough for the cooler aspect of the changeable British summer day, yet light enough and loose enough for the warmer aspect of the changeable British summer day. Massive pockets, too.

Calliopespa · 25/04/2026 18:59

Yup floaty widelegs OP. If you get them wide enough, you can pull them up to your thighs for a sneaky sunbathe/cooling down and drop them down again when the doorbell rings!

Squirrelsnut · 25/04/2026 22:01

I got some palazzo pants at Sainsbury's today, they're very light and airy.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/04/2026 22:15

Lucy & Yak Alexa trousers. Very light and cool in the summer. I have them in navy and black, although L&Y have them in the more dopamine friendly patterns & colours they are known for.

canuckup · 25/04/2026 23:54

3/4 length pants, aka pedal pushers, and a long light top

Also wear a lot of dresses of the same lengths

Uniqlo do basic lightweight trousers, not too wide, elastic waist. I have them in 4 colours!

Peony1985 · Yesterday 09:11

I like barrel leg cotton trousers that end a bit higher. The supermarket ranges have a version.
You can wear them old school with sandals like Birkenstocks or a bit younger with socks and flat clogs

FancyLilacHare · Yesterday 10:33

White jeans

Capri pants

Loose linen trousers

Whatthefork1 · Yesterday 10:46

Linen trousers
long flowy skirts and dresses

Gagamama2 · Yesterday 13:12

these are a game changer for summer, honestly. i have a condition in my legs which means like you i dont like to expose them as am self conscious but these shorts are thin, light, and keep me feeling cool and non-sticky under the skirts. so comfy

Some great ideas, thank you for starting this post.

ExOptimist · Yesterday 14:56

Got a nice pair of wide leg slightly cropped trousers from Sainsbury's in chocolate brown linen mix, wore them yesterday and got several compliments.
I never expose my legs, wear lots of linen trousers, culottes and wide leg trousers in floaty fabrics.
My opinion is that many of the people who wear shorts in public, ( excluding on a beach) really shouldn't.

JackieGoodman · Yesterday 15:08

Same as @MummyInTheNecropolis
Light and drapey and not dragging on the floor, I burnt my legs on hols once and these type of trousers were perfect, I have several pairs (also Scotland Grin)

LivingTheDreamish · Today 00:23

M&S have lots of nice lightweight culottes and wide leg trousers in at the moment. I live in this kind of thing in the summer.

The culottes have sold out in my local store and online. I did get some lovely cotton barrel legs in khaki from Primark last week which are lovely and a good alternative.

I disagree, let's not buy into the misogyny of women's clothing please. They should (and do) wear what they're comfortable in.

Hard agree.

Also by the end of summer or after being on holiday you’ve seen so many legs they don’t register. It’s always the initial exposure that’s tricky.

You are being complimented on your choice of clothing which is good, but why so judgemental of others choices?

Just because you don't like exposing your legs doesn't mean others have to follow suit.

It's 2026 and women all over the world, are free to wear what they like with no judgement.

changenameagain555 · Today 12:33

After a bee flew up my trousers last summer I got some harem pants from forgotten tribes. Very cool in hot weather and cuffed at the bottom
