Prom dress advice

Newbie here but needing advice.
my daughter is looking for prom dresses. She is 16 and wants to look amazing of course. However she is a size 20 due to medical issues.
I just can’t seem to find anything that isn’t too plain and too old for her. She’s getting increasingly upset.
I’m not rich by any means so can afford custom made etc.
Does anybody have any ideas out can point me in the right direction.
She wants it to be blue and shoe off her bust!!
Thank you.

What's your budget? When's the prom? Where have you already looked?

I’ve spent hours on Vinted and eBay. Lots of google searching. Budget up to £200. Prom is June.

ASOS has lots of prom dresses and a good search option so that would be my next suggestion after Vinted.

FruAashild · 24/04/2026 19:00

Vinted is a bloody nightmare now with the sizing all gone to pot.

Do you have a local second hand dress agency? You could also take a look at Monsoon as they usually have some lovely dresses

Gorja · 24/04/2026 19:03

I’ve tried monsoon but they all look too grown up for a 16 year old. She wants embroidery and taffeta!!

How about Roman? For example

This is the sort of style she wants. But with some sparkle.

Have you tried Ever Pretty?
I’ve had a few things from them. They have all been nicely made but needed taking up a little as I’m only 5’5”.
They do plus sizes and do most things in lots of colours.

Any local charity shops with a prom/ bridesmaid floor?

Gorja · 24/04/2026 19:29

Tried charity shops and nothing in her size. She just wants to be a princess for the evening and I just want to make it happen for her.

Google image search the dress she likes, lots of sellers usually come up.
You can then find size required

Gorja · 24/04/2026 20:11

I’ve done the Google search thing and can’t find anything from a reputable site. She’s signing in her bedroom and I’m searching dresses through tears. I wish she was a toddler again.

Have you tried JJs house? They are from China with a 20 day ish delivery time but I’ve just got my bridesmaid dresses from there and the quality is really decent, and so was the customer service when I made a mistake. They’ve got larger sizes and do custom to measurements if needs be

user71017 · 24/04/2026 20:17

Ive got my dd’s dress from a specific prom dress shop. They had a big collection in the sale rack of around £150 and catered for all sizes.

staringatthesun · 24/04/2026 20:20

Where are you based? Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park has loads of shops selling prom dresses in loads of styles that don't cost a fortune if you are in London.

Torchout · 24/04/2026 20:22

I hate to say this but Shein formal dresses seem good value for money and are sizing inclusive.

Gorja · 24/04/2026 20:25

In Leicester I’m afraid. Prom dress shops here are all £300 and above which I just don’t have. I’ll try Shein and JJs.

Another vote for jjs house.you can pay a small fee to have up to 4 dresses to try on at home

tomorrowchild · 24/04/2026 20:32

I know people don’t like shein but they have some lovely dresses, and very cheap for a one night only wear. Also they have measurements on most making it easier to order the correct size. You could order a few options without breaking the bank and return what you don’t like

This is beautiful and with sparkling shoes and jewellery would look very on Trend! It’s a bargain too 😍

with beautiful hair and makeup she’d look stunning 🤩
