Looking for a dress for a daytime school event this summer. Smart but not super smart. Great summer dress vibes basically

I would like to look amazing and appropriate but I also like a little 'edge' with my look.

Size 10 and have boobs so need a dress that bra is ok with (this is currently my issue, all the dresses I like are backless!).

TIA...

😂

I just meant more that I like black and hate polka dots - no latex or anything interesting here!

At the moment the backless trend, the polka dot trend and the bloody puff shoulder sleeve* trend are doing me in.

*Have broad shoulders, I look awful with extra shoulder material.

Me too!

Koulibiak · 22/04/2026 18:35

@patate10can you post a link to those backless dresses that you like? I’m also a size 10 but with no boobs, and also hate polka dots and puffy sleeves 😊. Thank you 🙏

Mixture of budgets as I am all over the place with this search! Ive even ordered a red (!) mango dress that I really think will be going straight back.

What sort of event is it? Sports day on the playing fields / prize giving in the hall / cake sale / an open day? And what sort of school? Other than a prep school summer ball, I don’t think I’ve ever seen parents in backless dresses in a school environment.

patate10 · 23/04/2026 10:12

Speech day on the field in marquee, not totally backless but as per my links deffo spotted over the years from parents and younger funkier teachers. This is final year so we are the VIP parents. Speeches, many awards, drinks and photos on the lawn afterwards.

New look has some dresses that are slightly different to the norm.

Ohhh! 😄 I’d want this whole outfit - with different shoes:

(And my best sunglasses.) Would be awesome in the photos.

Edited

A little out of budget but agree! Also agree on the shoes - what were they thinking?!

Fellow broad-shouldered, big boobed woman! I feel your pain. I also am on a perpetual hunt for dresses that respect my need for a bra, aren’t twee, and aren’t designed for narrow-shouldered women. (Crew necks, puffed sleeves, and boxy cuts are the bane of my life.)

I am thinking this dress with its deep neckline & wide straps (bra coverage, flattering to broader shoulders), long seamed bodice and flared skirt might be a good option? It comes in a few different colours, if brown isn’t your thing:

I do think in a field full of women in flouncy floral frocks, the person in a strictly plain white ensemble is going to stand out - fabulously. (That’s what I call edgy.)

Easily replicated at any price point.

patate10 · 23/04/2026 11:04

I do agree floral might not be the one... I'd normally just go black but maybe white is the one...

I like this, haven't tried a dropped waist for a long while.

I feel like designers ignore our body shape as much harder than narrow shoulder and small boobs!

All Saints / Religion/ Disturbia might all be worth a look for something less polka dot like.

https://religionclothing.com/products/hidden-pink-floral-print-maxi-dress

Not sure this is really the shape your prefer but I'd enjoy flouncing across an event in it!

I bloody love this but WHY IS IT TIERED? It should just be a lovely flowy single drop. CHEAP bloody corner cutting.

(Ordering it anyway to see if it is soft and flowy enough to hide the stupid tiering)

Not exactly the same as the Toteme one, also in terms of price, but this is lovely.

Don’t try to look ‘edgy’ for a school event. Your child will die of cringe … 😄

These are beautifully made, so a little elevated from the everyday:

https://daydress.co.uk/collections/the-dresses?srsltid=AfmBOor1-8wiHrTq7_xQcD_jsDtnEtRibm-Ja6ABfId47MHYrsg62KO8

They’re nice but there are dresses just as nice at a lower price eg M&S, next.

EscapadeVelocity · 23/04/2026 18:07

So what?

I think the tier is really just a single flounce at the bottom (to give it a bit of kick), that doesn't affect/cut through the outsized floral pattern?

I do know what you mean though - those types of patterns can't be invisibly matched without using lots of additional fabric - so the cheaper brands (& even some of the much more expensive ones!!) don't bother to match them at all, & it's really annoying!!

Almost as annoying as dresses that only have the pattern/embroidery on the front, & the back is left completely plain ...
