Looking for a dress for a daytime school event this summer. Smart but not super smart. Great summer dress vibes basically

I would like to look amazing and appropriate but I also like a little 'edge' with my look.

Size 10 and have boobs so need a dress that bra is ok with (this is currently my issue, all the dresses I like are backless!).

TIA...

I don’t want to be a negative, but I’d remember it’s about your child, they are the vip. And as much as you say edgy, it looks like you want sexy. Honestly I’d have thought you were on the pull. I’d just try to make sure you look elegant, and appropriate for the event and out your child first.

Tuhafeni · 23/04/2026 19:02

I probably wouldn’t go edgy but monochrome is a super idea. Find something you feel really great in, and maybe you can go.edgy on the accessories. I’m wearing this for speech day. Definitely not edgy. It’s my annual ‘nice frock’ to cover speech day and other summer nice frock events. This number will be multitasking through to the end of September. It’s having its first outing tomorrow at a posh restaurant, where I will probably spill something down it. https://www.thereformation.com/products/cecilia-linen-dress/1319452HRY.html?dwvar_1319452HRY_color=HRY&gl=11soh60vupMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjwhqfPBhBWEiwAZo196qkEijMQ2K9dAQgbEQvMaUGrRS2wfl8_lbv3yp5S-U4YtvpatqAEcBoCVeIQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAABnwCweJbv31_Vw2QPN0ezPFz-8s7

Just your presence at speech day will probably be "cringe", whether you are looking edgy/sexy or covered from neck to toe!!

These dresses are all from Massimo Dutti. I also agree that black (since you love it), or off-white/white, not dissimilar to @Tuhafeni 's Reformation dress are good options (if you're sure you won't be going near any sports fields!). Great sandals & simple gold/silver jewellery (bangles/earrings etc), & you'll look cool & confident.

I like these too (also Massimo Dutti). Definite piss-taking from children opportunities though - one has asymmetric sleeves, the other a harem-pant jumpsuit style ... Fuck 'em - just dock their pocket money if they as much as squeak!

Oh, & sticking with a single colour but not black/white - in case you like dusky pink ramie (like linen), this is a really elegant-looking dress from M&S Autograph!

Do any of these have the edge you want? I am having a monochrome summer so am avoiding florals!

They’re nice but there are dresses just as nice at a lower price eg M&S, next.

Slightly fuller response: in general I prefer smaller brands with interesting provenance. Or lovely fabrics, or an element of craft. I love clothes and want to feel vaguely excited by what I buy.

More specifically, for events, I would rather not run the risk of turning up in the same frock as half a million other women.

And finally - this is a Style and Beauty board. Not a You must buy the very cheapest thing you can find to cover nakedness on every possible occasion board. I guess you could ask MN to start one of those, if you like?

Sounds like a first-year fashion student's end-of-year project ... could be rather fun!

How are you finding the quality of Reformation at the moment? I live a lot of their dresses, but I keep seeing people on Reddit complaining the quality’s not what it used to be. I have no context to compare to, though!

Tuhafeni · 23/04/2026 21:42

@EleanorMc67 that pink dress is absolutely gorgeous. I think they had a similar design in last year but in blue.

@RayonSunrise the linen dress is good quality linen and well made but it’s a very simple cut so there’s not too much to go wrong. I’m not sure about the silk dresses with complicated draping etc.

MrsW9 · 23/04/2026 21:57

Palava do beautifully made dresses, if you like the prints.

The thing is those more expensive dresses didn’t look any better than those at M&S imo.

There's a little strappy peplum top in the same fabric too, which is also lovely!

I've been really impressed with Autograph lately. Their knitwear last winter was great.

Tried this on recently. Liked it, but no real need for it, so didn’t buy. I do feel it might be the ‘three people in it at every occasion’ dress this summer though …

Drop links to the M&S ones you have in mind. We love a good frock and don’t really care where it’s from!

I think the tier is really just a single flounce at the bottom (to give it a bit of kick), that doesn't affect/cut through the outsized floral pattern?

I do know what you mean though - those types of patterns can't be invisibly matched without using lots of additional fabric - so the cheaper brands (& even some of the much more expensive ones!!) don't bother to match them at all, & it's really annoying!!

Almost as annoying as dresses that only have the pattern/embroidery on the front, & the back is left completely plain ...

The single tier / flounce is even more annoying. It just screams ‘we’ve stuck this extra foot of fabric on the bottom because it’s cheaper than making the dress from a single long length’. That’s what annoys me, more so than the pattern-matching issue in this particular case.

eta And I don’t want a kick. I want a smooth flowing DROP of a full length maxi dress.

Ohhh! 😄 I’d want this whole outfit - with different shoes:

https://int.toteme.com/products/beaded-pleat-skirt-white

(And my best sunglasses.) Would be awesome in the photos.

I think this is a great look but the price is ridiculous when you add in all the extra parts - that's only for the skirt.

You could definitely recreate it if you had a scout on on vinted, pullandbear, next.

However I wouldn't do all white as I'd be worried I'd end up looking like I was at a themed party trying to pulloff Jackie O. Also the whites won't match properly. I'd focus more on getting complementary fabrics and do a combo of white, cream, off white.

Shoes are a disaster, anything would be better. I'm casual so I'd probably throw a pair of Birkenstock clogs on but I appreciate that's not for everyone.

Thanks for starting the thread, so nice to see one not completely dominated by floral sacks.
