Is making me look so fat. I wear baggy clothes because my waist is two sizes bigger than my body

And if they had come here asking which magical incantations would fix the problem, would you simply play along?

I got 2 shapermint vests for £25 in the sale, I like them because
1: they are long and come down to my thighs. I’m really long in the body with big shoulders/rib cage. I’m a size 18 but went for the size 20-22 for comfort.
2: they have washed really well.
3: you don’t need a bra if you’re under a d-cup.
4: they support my back and hips.

The only issue, as I said, was going to the loo, when you pull them up to get at your pants they are incredibly tight round the waist so are a bit of a struggle to get properly in place again as they are designed to be pulled up, not down, once in place however, not uncomfortably tight at all round my hips, which is weird considering my waist is 10 inches smaller than my hips.
I wish I hadn’t worn one on a flight, I’m a fidget when flying and it kept riding up, probably due to the memory foam cushion at my back though.
They are comfy and didn’t make me sweat at all in 25° heat.

Similar situation and it’s slowly dawning on me that wearing wide leg and baggy or oversized clothes only look good on twiglets. I have just bought small flare/bootcut jeans and trousers. So fitted around high waist and hip and thigh, then gently flare or kick out. Fitted though not tight. Then a shirt or blouse can be loose if not tucked in. It took me ages to find the right pair but have now ordered in 3 colours! I tend to shop in the sale of mid/higher end as the cut makes a huge difference. I think I can get one pair of fabulous trousers instead of 2 or 3 cheap versions. Good luck x

I sympathise, but it is excess weight. You can lose it. And do some exercises to tighten your abs- lots online.

When I put on a few pounds it goes exactly there.

Maybe if you can shed 4-5 pounds ?

Being kind but frank- you do look a bit overweight as you have back fat too.
Two to three weeks of really cutting back should shift a lot of that.

The only thing that works for me is low carb, upping my walking to 45-60 mins a day and basically eating less.

Hmm You can be a size zero and still wind up with a post pregnancy overhang. Wind your neck in!

MessyNDepressy · 20/04/2026 11:53

Have a look at Cary’s Whittaker on Facebook/Instagram. Her content is mainly based around clothes that look good with a belly. She always looks amazing!

Heartbreaksally · 20/04/2026 12:43

I actually found wearing my maternity jeans helped the most - they were the ones with the over the bump bit - and a top that was fitted around my bust and then flowy from there. Im sure theres a proper name for the shape but I dont know what it is. The over the bump jeans minimised and bit and stopped the flowy top from clinging.

I find I need clothes to be fitted somewhere otherwise I look scruffy. So I try to get fitted round my best bits and flowy round the not so best bits.

ETA i'm slim and a uk size 10-12 at 6ft tall and still have an overhang post babies to the rude posters giving unsolicited advice.

Full blouses, shirts, loose dresses, anything other than clingy jumpers and T shirts.

Much more helpful and answers the OP's question.

BorgQueen · 20/04/2026 12:56

I could lose 3 stone, be back to a pre-babies size 12 snd NEVER lose my overhang.
How many times do I have to reiterate, if your skin is over stretched ti the pount of ripping, it will never shrink back.

You either have elastic skin or you don’t. I only put on 24 lbs when pregnant but my skin looked like a road map with 2 inch wide stretch marks and it actually split over my navel. I was left like a deflated balloon after birth and nothing worked, not a girdle ( MiL swore it would fix things) not diet or excercise.
The underlying muscle by my left hip was damaged by a car crash at 20 so I’ve always had a ‘dent’ there even when I had a lovely flat and smooth lower belly, now my excess skin is folded over and I can hold it in both hands. If I lost a lot of weight it would likely hang down to mid thigh.
My friend however, was 5ft nothing, size 6 and was absolutely huge when pregnant, she snapped back in a week with hardly a stretch mark.

You'll likely be in the firing line of "slips are so old fashioned /do they still exist /only my grandmother wears them" or, "not even my grandmother wears them" comments.

You are of course correct.

This works? A half slip under à dress, with some big knickers? I have the same situation as OP and I don’t think I could stand shapewear, I hate tight clothing. How does a half slip help? I’m totally open to it, I loved my grandmother!

What ON EARTH are you talking about???

She. Just. Wants. Clothes.

henlake7 · 20/04/2026 13:32

I swear by a decent pair of granny pants! Something that comes up high enough and has abit of compression (but not so much it feels restrictive).
Then things like peplum tops or ones that hit mid hip or lower.

Some of us are just stuck with this through pregnancy or weight loss. Im 'blessed' with a double overhang (same as OP, also a little one at waist level) thanks to extreme weight loss. I exercise regularly and do pilates and weight training which does pull up the muscles underneath but wont make the loose skin go anywhere.

Tell you what - why don't you just copy your response, and then every time you see a post on here from anyone who is looking for ideas on what clothes to wear to disguise their large thighs, or saggy boobs, or bingo wings, or large bum, or whatever it is they don't particularly like, you can just paste it into your reply? That way, instead of actually giving a response to the OP or going to the bother of linking to clothes that could work, you could simply boil your answer down to 'you're fat' and save yourself having to type a constructive answer to the actual question asked.

Why would I do that?

Why would I do that?

Why would you respond the way you did in the first place?

You and all the other posters giving their unsolicited opinions and 'advice' on the OP's body?

Style & Beauty is generally a nice, supportive forum. Unfortunately some of the nastiness from other parts of the site has shown up here for some reason.

I find it bizarre that women are coming on this thread making all these accusations about my diet, exercise, what I do and don't do etc.

Weird.

It's a fashion sub, get with the programme

Many on here are obsessed with being as tiny as possible and eating very little, they haven’t even noticed it’s style and beauty. Good luck i’m sure there will be helpful people!

As others have said it just helps to smooth things out.

If you have an overhang, and it bothers you, then hipster knickers, thongs, whatever that are lower than the overhang make it look worse.

Big armpit hugging knickers stopping above the overhang , hold it in. If you wear tights a good pair of haul them up tights also help. They don't need to be shapewear to work.

The OP is wearing the wrong knickers if she wants to solve or at least, mitigate the issue. They're actually making it worse as they push the overhang up and out.

This is open front (so you wear your own bra and it sits underneath your boobs, basically high waisted pants with braces 😆. The model is wearing a bra too though)
I have a couple of these and they are like fabulous shaping pants but don’t slip down and are brilliant. They are also great for keeping tights in place.

Have tried the shorts style ones and they do exactly the same but tend to have an open crotch and then it’s another layer to manage which can look a bit lumpy as you’d have to wear pants over the top- it’s a bit hot in summer but quite nice in winter!

I also have some high waisted shaping pants from Tesco, and they are great- they occasionally slip down but I find if I hoik them up far enough for my bra strap to sit just on top, they stay put better.

How do I hide my overhang?

No she's not - she acknowledges her stomach.

Any suggestions for clothing?

I’ve suggested a few!

slips and high up tights, like snag tights

I also said a better fitting bra would help: would give a better line and hoik everything up and that did not go down well

Slips are brilliant, help clothes skim over the lumps and bumps and hang better. John Lewis does good ones

WeightLossGoal2024 · 21/04/2026 22:02

I find dresses with a waist much more flattering than trousers and a top. I like shape wear under dresses or tights to smooth out my lines.

mehday · 21/04/2026 22:14

I’ve had success with tops which have a twist at the front (as if knotted at the bottom). I thought they might emphasise the area, but actually they disguise it.

Lovemycat2023 · 21/04/2026 22:44

I find the fuller briefs help towards the end of the day when the trousers I wear otherwise go out of shape. I wear wide leg jersey trousers and pull on bootleg halara jeans and both benefit from having pants which reach my belly button (it’s hard to explain, but it’s due to how the trousers stretch during the day).

I also like the White Stuff dresses which are loose around the middle (plus have pockets). Great choice in patterns and you can wear in winter with layers and boots, or summer with sandals.

Joeydoesntsharefood25 · 21/04/2026 22:46

I found Pinterest searching for mid-size clothes and following women with similar body type on Instagram very inspiring. I like Midsize Kimberly for her style .
