Why? That only improves the look with clothes off

No it doesn't. Big knickers, slips and tights that you pull right up make a huge difference in the appearance of clothes.

But @maisiepoppins is right - changing your diet will help. We need to move away from the fallacy that pregnancy causes irreversible or inevitable weight gain and “mum tum”.

I have a 12cm diastadis recti from four pregnancies. My youngest is 18 and no amount of physio can fix it. I’ve recently lost six stone (1/3 of my body weight) and I look 7 months pregnant despite wearing a size 12. For some women, pregnancy does actually destroy their body and it’s cruel to suggest that women are just choosing to look that way. I don’t want to look like I’m having a baby any second but I can’t afford the surgery I need to rejoin the muscles and the nhs won’t do it unless I get a hernia.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 19/04/2026 15:02

I have similar problem, empire line dresses cover the 'bump' well. With trousers, I wear high waisted and a top that hangs rather than clings

Ohthatsabitshit · 19/04/2026 15:08

I have a similar but more extreme pooch and yes it is caused by pregnancy. I’d guess those saying pregnancy doesn’t impact body shape have very few children, are very young or literally have no idea how women’s bodies work and age.

Myself I wouldn’t do the big pant or squish and smooth shapewear options because nothing is more uncomfortable and unhygienic than a fold of warm flesh. I’m very active all day so my body needs clothes that it can work in.

Thicker high waisted jeans and a cardigan or overshirt, plus a vneck more form fitting tshirt, if you can get away with being casual. Beautiful fabrics and blended colours help.

CmonBobby · 19/04/2026 15:10

my belly hangs down a lot more than yours, so I absolutely cannot wear jeans at the moment but what does look nice are

The H and M cropped pull on trousers (search for that and you will find them).

Beyond nine Huxley jersey trousers - quite a few of theirs are a balloon shape that I find works well for me

Toast Loopback jersey trousers

All these look nice with a heavyweight cotton t shirt from Uniqlo or H and M that I slightly tuck in (very millenial of me) with trainers and nice necklace etc

oh and although I can’t really wear jeans I can ALMOST wear the Abercrombie curve 90s high waist mom jeans. I’ve got a pair to get into. If I was a fraction smaller in the tummy they would like nice. You are def smaller than me in the tummy so I would try a pair.

Knickers wise, just get some nice big ones and you can get some with a little bit of support/compression, mine are Sloggi and they just help to keep everything secure.

I have the exact same problem but nothing I wear magically hides it.

I'm trying to lose weight and doing deep core exercises to try and tighten it up and reduce my waist

They say wrap dresses are good for this but I've never felt any better in them. Peplum style tops and high waisted jeans (Stradivarius are my favourite and there's always decent ones on Vinted for a good price) are my usual go to but nothing makes up for my lack of waist tbh

I also can't say that I've ever been impressed by shapewear, plus it's super uncomfortable

SoScarletItWas · 19/04/2026 14:38

You really are snippy!

It’s because she KNOWS the people telling her that diet and exercise are the answer are correct, she just doesn’t like it. 🙄

likelysuspect · 19/04/2026 15:15

Definitely big knickers, containers as I like to call them. Mine end at the bottom of my rib cage, they're Playtex off Amazon

I also find stretchy stuff isnt good because it just allows all the loose body to hang out, you want something more structured

I assume this is for when you're out of work though, weekends and goinng out? Not worth it for day to day work if you're wearing a uniform which I presume you are

Also good shoes for standing upright, good posture.

To borrow from Caitlin Moran, you grew an entire nervous system, four times. Four times over, you created a skeleton, a brain, internal organs and sensory organs, and you then kept those tiny lives going until they could manage for themselves. Don't put me anywhere near some bossyboots fathead who's got officious good advice about how to manage your body. This is MUMSnet.

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 19/04/2026 15:29

I have an apron tum. My son was a big baby and my body never recovered. I could lose weight (and am actively trying to) but my apron tum will only get worse when I do.

I don’t like shapewear I find it too restrictive.

What works for me is a top that is long enough to hide the area and I find wrap tops or tops with gathers at both sides very flattering. I get lots of compliments in those.

if you search “apron belly styling” on instagram you will get some helpful results.

DontShootTheMessanger · 19/04/2026 15:29

If you were to loose the extra weight/bloating then you could actually see how much of the stomach protrusion is actually visceral fat/bloating and how much is excess skin/lax tummy muscles. You may find that the excess skin doesn’t really bother you after the weight loss, and clothes fit you way better.

if you’re not interested in doing that then maybe a bright scarf or some large earrings and a funky hat or wig would draw attention up and away from the stomach area. Or maybe some baggy skateboarder type pants and hoodie could hide your figure.

ThatPeachSwan · 19/04/2026 15:29

Also agree with the recommendations for amazon high waisted big knickers, I find them really comfy and they help hold me in a bit, giving a smoother silhouette.

Ophir · 19/04/2026 15:30

I’d also add, get a bra with a smaller band size (will need bigger cup to adjust) and that will much improve the whole look

DeeplyMovingExperience · 19/04/2026 15:32

Definitely go for a big pants underwear. Soft control is comfortable. You look like a very similar shape to me. I go for "feel good, look good" attitude so gentle control big pants, then clothes fall really nicely.

Don't go for oversize because (by the looks of it) you're not oversized. Take time to go and try things on. Simplify your wardobe. Get rid of anything that you don't like.

The only colours for underwear is (1) black and (2) flesh coloured. Smooth texture. Also a short length slip goes a long way for streamlining your look.

I think the op is not feeling like being hounded about that just now. She is wanting style advice.

Some people like to focus on their baby and the diet aspect takes a back seat till they are ready.

wardobe123 · 19/04/2026 14:32

It's awful isn't it.

Sadly my stomach hasn't improved with my pregnancies and I dead lift 120kg weekly and do pull ups, but muscle strength has declined with menopause. I walk to work as well as spend 50% operating, but apparently I'm lazy and don't count calories

People here are very quick to judge whilst making assumptions, ignore.

My own go to is front tuck tops and wide legs. The waist should be disguised to be somewhere upper, and the proportions re-established. I avoid the leggings and wide top look like the plague!

Do you understand that once your muscles have separated sometimes they don’t re knit, and in fact you can make the gap bigger by exercising them? Do you understand that skin stretches to accommodate pregnancy and no amount of dieting will make it spring back and behave like skin that hasn’t been stretched in that way?

What a horrible post you chose to spend time composing. No hat or wig will distract from your nastiness.

CPNSBH · 19/04/2026 15:40

Primark do Shapewear knickers that hold me in way more than the other more expensive brands I’ve tried. They are comfortable too, I wear them all day at work.

JenniferJupiterr · 19/04/2026 15:41

You’re a bit scary OP 😀

When I'm trying to find something to suit my body, I ask AI and then try on arrange of styles in a shopping centre, as its easier and free! 😅
I also try Pinterest and look for similar body shapes.

Yeah people are weird. I was running marathons before I had kids and menopause. Diet is amazing. But they will always hate

This might not be the most up to date look, but its one I feel comfortable in with a larger tummy: Marks and Spencer do lovely quality wide side stripe trousers in different lengths. Quite a thick fabric but very comfortable, with no lumps and bumps showing. They are more flattering than jeans for me.
