Is making me look so fat. I wear baggy clothes because my waist is two sizes bigger than my body

How do I hide my overhang?

It's awful isn't it.

Sadly my stomach hasn't improved with my pregnancies and I dead lift 120kg weekly and do pull ups, but muscle strength has declined with menopause. I walk to work as well as spend 50% operating, but apparently I'm lazy and don't count calories

It really is, and I hate my overhang - didn't have it until my periods stopped just over a year ago. I'm watching this thread for ideas re what to wear (will filter the others out) - thanks for starting it - and for being brave to share your photo, I admire you.

Shaping underwear probably is the best thing to hide it, though.

High waisted jeans? That might do the job of holding it in without being as restrictive as shapewear.

Honestly the modern shapewear isn’t too bad though - as PP said, get the style that goes right up to your bra to avoid rolling down.

Or an empire line dress. These have the seam under the boobs so they skim over everything from above the waist.

Shapewear and shapewear underwear are two different things .

And no, Im still going to have the same amount of fat so I need to know how to shape it

You really are snippy!

Imicola · 19/04/2026 14:38

I'd suggest better/ bigger/ higher waist underwear, so it goes over rather than cuts in. I use m&s flexifit which are soft and comfortable. Shapewear I find just moves the bulge elsewhere. Then similar for clothes, either things that skim over, or slightly higher waist to cover/ hold in a bit. And fabrics which are not too thin, there are sine that will accentuate every lump and bump and others that are more forgiving.

You could make a start by wearing bigger knickers. By that I mean bigger in the sense of a bigger size and bigger in the sense of "big knickers" that come up to your waist rather than sitting under the overhang. They don't even need to be shapewear.

If you wear skirts and dresses shapewear tights make a huge difference.

its no wonder really! It’s like me posting in a size 18 and need help dressing and everyone saying “lose weight”
great, but I didn’t ask that and I want clothes to wear in the meantime….

Absolutely. Shapewear underwear is useless although shapewear tights oddly, do work.

I wasn’t posting diet advice, I gave clothing advice, so don’t lump me in with posters who you think deserve rudeness.

previouslyknownas · 19/04/2026 14:45

You can’t not really
the only thing that will hide it is smock type / A line style dress / tops but my personal opinion is that they look frumpy and old

compression type underwear smooth it out but also just pushes it upwards or to the sides so you will look fat in different areas
they really only work if your a bit overweight

realistically the only thing that will get rid of it is a tummy tuck and lipo especially if they overhang is from c section

Shatteredallthetimelately · 19/04/2026 14:45

I always wear a full brief.

If i want to look smooth under dresses/skirts I wear full control underwear from Bonmarche.

Happyjoe · 19/04/2026 14:46

High waisted jeggings/jeans, high wasted shape pants, anything high up with some elastic should help imo. M&S jeggings used to hold me in ok and really comfortable. But I remember buying a pair of the pants and they just rolled down. Expensive and stopped trying any others so if anyone knows of good ones, please post!

SirChenjins · 19/04/2026 14:48

If you're going to buy shapewear underwear make sure it's high waisted - if I buy the knickers type, it does nothing for my overhang.

This! The first handful of comments on were just mean and unnecessary.

From trying to sort my own wardrobe out, I've went for:

  • well fitting underwear
  • structured fabrics (higher waisted stiff denim for example)
  • v necklines to elongate and draw attention upwards
  • tops that hit mid hip or that have a slight flare
  • layer with an open blazer/cardigan/jacket

Is there a specific occasion you want to dress for, or is it your everyday casual wardrobe you need help with? I imagine you're in scrubs at work so no work wardrobe required?

Charming.

Enjoy your day.

You did deserve that, tbf.

BillieWiper · 19/04/2026 14:51

Spanks or skims or control tights or bodysuit? Whatever they're called.

Divebar2021 · 19/04/2026 14:51

I also think you should go for knickers that my mum calls Harvest festivals - all is safely gathered in. I can’t stand little knickers that sit under my pooch. I’ve got some from Snag that I really like that are cotton but feel firm. They’re not shape wear but I feel nicely tucked in. I also think a flat front trousers or jean with a mid to high waist. You can then be a little judicial with the top. They’re a bit pricy but the boxy t shirts from Rise & Fall have a bit of weight to them and fall on a flattering point on me without looking sloppy

Apprentice26 · 19/04/2026 14:52

Do you follow confident mummy on Instagram? She used to play Lucy Beale in EastEnders. She’s a lovely girl.
But she quite openly shows her buggered up stomach muscles on Insta and the dresses that she chooses to skim over them look great

Ophir · 19/04/2026 14:52

I hope I won’t be in the firing line for some perceived slight, but a slip, either half or full, really helps under skirts or dresses. And tights that you can pull right up. Snag are good

previouslyknownas · 19/04/2026 14:52

bigger pants ( so full size ones ) decent bra to keep boobs upright might make you look a bit better

But overall nothing not even diets or excercise will get rid of a overhang it will just be a bit smaller but still there

Madarch · 19/04/2026 14:52

Newmeagain · 19/04/2026 14:28

But @maisiepoppins is right - changing your diet will help. We need to move away from the fallacy that pregnancy causes irreversible or inevitable weight gain and “mum tum”.

That wasn't the OPs question.
Unsolicited diet and exercise advice is dickish

nothingcangowrongnow · 19/04/2026 14:54

Because your OP was very unclear. Are you pregnant or not? It wasn’t clear whether you wanted advice on how to improve your figure or how to hide it!

Goldbar31 · 19/04/2026 14:56

Peplum tops/v neck blouses in nice natural fibres, bootcut & wide leg jeans and trousers with a pleat that are high rise. Wrap dresses look good too.
I generally wear a heeled boot or wedge but appreciate that might not work with you for your occupation.

Why? That only improves the look with clothes off

You'll likely be in the firing line of "slips are so old fashioned /do they still exist /only my grandmother wears them" or, "not even my grandmother wears them" comments.

You are of course correct.

mantez · 19/04/2026 14:59

I think what you are wearing in the photo emphasises your "overhang". Now don't take offence, but the first thing I thought was - those knickers are too small, and so are the leggings - around your waist area anyway. Well you did ask!

So (I have a belly too) I buy loose fitting trousers and I go up a size if I can, or a midi length skirt. That usually works with comfort or elastic waistbands. And get bigger knickers love. Buy those that go over the bumpy bits. Then a top/shirt that comes to the top of your thighs. If you want shorter buy something that is loose around the waist.

I know, I know you don't want to look like a sack of spuds! But try it out, everything is oversized these days anyway!
