Loewe ballet runners or Hogan HiFis for jeans and wide legs?

I am a relatively new convert to Loewe and think my almost navy Puzzle bag is possibly one of the nicest I’ve ever owned. I am looking at the Loewe ballet runners which look gorgeous but I’ve also had my head turned by the Hogan HiFis in a similar colour way.

They are mostly to wear with jeans or wide leg trousers. I’ve just bought a gorgeous Veronica Beard Dicky Jacket and matching wide leg trousers in navy linen (not the high crease type) for Summer which is also the sort of thing I would wear trainers with. I’ve dropped from a size 20 to a size 12 over the past couple of years and I am loving building my new wardrobe of high quality timeless pieces.

Am I just a fool with a big budget? I also love my Addidas Spetzials which I have in 6 colours but at 52 I’m looking for something a bit more refined rather than matching with my teenagers. I haven’t ruled out getting the ballet runners and also getting the Hogans in the blue colourway, but since they are different heights it will be difficult to mix and match without tailoring my trousers to somewhere in the middle.

The thoughts of the style icons of MN would be greatly appreciated.

It’s meant to combine the construction of a ballet pump with the style of a 70s track shoe.

😆 ok, thanks

Yes what I love about them is that they feel like dance shoes.

I used to have those soft lace up jazz shoes for dancing and I loved them. This style gives me that vibe.

I clicked on this thread because it happened to be at the top of the Featured threads on my home page.

I'm now trying to decide whether it's a satire thread or whether a percentage of MN posters really do inhabit a totally different world to us lesser mortals.

Have you never seen expensive things in shops before?

Didn't you realise people buy them?

Did you think imaginary beings bought expensive things?

Well yes, then opening this thread must have come as a real shock to you.

We walk among you.
In our expensive shoes.

I have been known to buy expensive things occasionally myself.

But. I'm not obsessed with expensive things and I'm not self obsessed .

And I also do not look down my nose at other people who don't wear expensive shoes.

StrawberryWasp · 28/03/2026 21:12

Then your snarky post doesn't make sense.

And no one is obsessed, or looking down on people who don't buy expensive shoes.
We were just chatting about shoes

I’m personally not a fan of either. Have you considered some of the Gucci ones, which for designer shoes I think are on the more understated/classier side?

I bought a Loewe raffia Pochette bag two summers ago and I love it - it’s a perfect holiday cross-body bag for day and night. I have been considering treating myself to either the small Puzzle or the medium Bilbao this year. If you don’t mind me asking, what do you use your puzzle for? Is it your day to day bag or more of a going out/occasion piece? Can it comfortably fit a purse, phone, keys, lippie etc?

RowNine · 29/03/2026 12:26

Goes without saying buy whatever you like but I do find designer trainers a bit naff (I'll make an exception for the miu miu x new balance pair though!).

Very ubiquitous but the Saloman XT go with literally anything and are super comfy.

dinbin · 29/03/2026 12:29

I really dislike both style of trainers.

dinbin · 29/03/2026 12:33

@StrawberryWasp I find Chloe shoes fit as normal. I like those but think they would get dirty so quickly, I’m sure i have seen a Zara version.

HugoThatway · 29/03/2026 12:34

I don't particularly like the Salomon XT but they'd probably be better in terms of comfort and durability.

No one has answered the question I posted earlier- what is it about these type of shoes that encourage people to drop 500 on these? It's not the technical factors of the shoe? So is it purely for the logo? I don't understand it as every roadman is wearing these or a copy of these things.

HugoThatway · 29/03/2026 12:41

@corblimeyguvnr , every roadman is wearing these or a copy of these things. Really?

I don't even think the shoes in the OP look nice. The first pair has some appeal but is naff and the 2nd pair are ugly.

I can only speak for myself, but I'll try to answer.

I bought a pair of the flow runners in black probably 3 years ago (maybe 4). To be blunt, I have disposable income and buy things I like, although not excessively. At the time, there weren't lots of shoes around that looked like that. Now there are. I liked the way these looked when I bought them and I still like them now.

I don't find them wildly comfortable, as in, I'll wear them for a day doing the usual daily stuff and be happy enough, but I wouldn't wear them for a weekend in a foreign city with loads of walking. I also tried a pair of Loewe x on trainers and found them pretty uncomfortable, so I'm not sure I'd go out on a limb as to the comfort of their shoes in general, but they have held up extremely well.

I think the posters who are sniffing about how hideous or naff they are because they're not Adidas or an obscure Japanese brand made by milk-fed maidens in the moonlight during three days of cherry blossom season that only 6 people know about are ridiculous.

Amusingly, I was thinking about this thread last night, as DD went out for the evening wearing them.

I have the puzzle crossbody mini and I don't recommend it. It's almost too small to be useful and the top makes it really fiddly to get things in and out of. I've hardly used it. Looks great though!

'Designer' trainers aren't a homogenous mass lacking individual identity.

How are those any less 'naff'?

I don't like Adidas to wear as I don't find them comfortable. I don't think trainers are stylish.

If you do, that's up to you.

The Salomon XTs are ugly and are leisure shoes. I've seen them in TK Maxx. I don't think they're naff.

I did explain that I just like the dance shoe style of the Chloe shoes.

I've been thinking about whether to get them since last summer and been looking for something I liked as much but couldn't find anything so was thinking about getting them. Hence my post asking for advice.

Helpful people on this thread then helped me find some I like just as much which are £400 cheaper.

That's the key for me - comfort as well as something I like the look of. I want to be able to wear them from day one. I also have a load of disposable income but would never pay 400 pounds for a pair of trainers. When I go on my long distance holidays I literally take two pairs of shoes one being trainers. I will only buy leather. In fact I have bought over the years several pairs of the same one. Maybe it's my upbringing but I balk at the idea of paying that amount for something which is essentially a dressy trainer.Logos don't float my boat.

Oh god jazz shoes - we used to wear those in the 1980s when the exercise craze started off 😂

You've taken this personally when there is no need. It's just a difference in opinion. I'm sorry you feel picked on if that is what you are saying.

I think there are logos and there are logos. I've recently not bought Prada shoes that I liked because I hated that they said Prada on them, but I've been happy to buy Louboutins, not deterred at all by the branding. But all trainers are pretty identifiable. And no logos is a bit disingenuous - it would be a pretty unusual pair in the street where I couldn't pick out the brand. The three stripes are a logo, the swoosh is a logo.

And I don't mind paying that for shoes I'll get wear out of, and I just consider trainers (other than running ones) to be shoes. A pp has posted her Gucci loafers, not my cup of tea, but she loves them. How are they materially different than a Loewe trainer? They're both daily wear shoes that were deemed worth the money by the purchaser.
