Loewe ballet runners or Hogan HiFis for jeans and wide legs?

I am a relatively new convert to Loewe and think my almost navy Puzzle bag is possibly one of the nicest I’ve ever owned. I am looking at the Loewe ballet runners which look gorgeous but I’ve also had my head turned by the Hogan HiFis in a similar colour way.

They are mostly to wear with jeans or wide leg trousers. I’ve just bought a gorgeous Veronica Beard Dicky Jacket and matching wide leg trousers in navy linen (not the high crease type) for Summer which is also the sort of thing I would wear trainers with. I’ve dropped from a size 20 to a size 12 over the past couple of years and I am loving building my new wardrobe of high quality timeless pieces.

Am I just a fool with a big budget? I also love my Addidas Spetzials which I have in 6 colours but at 52 I’m looking for something a bit more refined rather than matching with my teenagers. I haven’t ruled out getting the ballet runners and also getting the Hogans in the blue colourway, but since they are different heights it will be difficult to mix and match without tailoring my trousers to somewhere in the middle.

The thoughts of the style icons of MN would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a fashionable person, nor do I have your budget. That said, I quite like the Leowe ones. In the pictures, both options look a bit Marks & Spencers though I imagine close up their better materials are more obvious!

They do!

watchingthishtread · 25/03/2026 20:09

The back of the Loewe looks like it comes up too high and would be torture on the achilles. They also sit quite high against the ankle bone. They look like an uncomfortable fit.

corblimeyguvnr · 25/03/2026 20:21

I don't understand why people would pay 400 for an ugly shoe? Is it because of the logo/name? Is it because of their technical factors?

WildLeader · 25/03/2026 20:47

Wide leg trousers look good with boots, trainers are a bit meh and scruffy, in any budget

sixsept · 25/03/2026 21:27

OhDear111 · 25/03/2026 12:18

@HolidayHappy123 Loewe - but I haven’t tried them on. Just a classic slim running shoe. They are not trainers.

Why aren't they trainers? I don't understand what the difference is!

TheChosenTwo · 25/03/2026 21:33

HugoThatway · 25/03/2026 14:44

Honestly think that trainers look best when they are made by an actual sports brand. There’s something weird about trainers made elsewhere...
There's something 'inauthentic' about them.

Oh god I totally agree, the hogans in particular look like sports direct specials! No offence to sports direct, some of their trainers are no doubt fine but these are absolutely dreadful.
And I really dislike the L on the Loewe and the sole creeping up over the front.
Sorry, I think both pairs are awful 🫣

Fatiguedwithlife · 25/03/2026 21:43

They’re both awful.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 25/03/2026 22:33

Not sure I'd literally spend half of my monthly budget on some trainers that look awful.

I'm a bit of an Adidas Originals fan, and love my usual Spezials and Gazelles, and was partial to the Superstar ones too when younger. They're extremely comfortable and well made, and although I get the whole buying the expensive ones like Hogan but for the price of them, I could buy 4 pairs of Adidas that I know will be comfortable.

Or for a fraction of the money, I could buy some Asics running trainers which are absolutely comfortable and know they're not that fashionable, but well made.

GingerKombucha · 26/03/2026 07:02

I love the Loewe bags but I don't get spending that on the shoes which look fine. I would get something like this https://www.office.co.uk/view/product/office_catalog/2,20/4037489103 (they come with other laces) and save the money to put towards a puzzle bag in another colour. In my expereince bags last years and trainers will be looking rubbish by autum.

Oh no!

Ceramiq · 26/03/2026 07:51

I agree with other posters - if you want sports shoes, buy them from sports shoes specialists rather than from a luxury brand. It's way more chic and stylish to build your wardrobe from specialist suppliers than from luxury brands. I absolutely love returning to my favourite specialist suppliers year after year, including suppliers that are hard to find outside their country of origin. Yes, it's a form of snobbery to wear things that only insiders recognize ;) but it also makes for a wardrobe that is more timeless, longer lasting and much more personal.

Totally agree. The two @HolidayHappy123 posted look like new balance wannabes

Do like the puzzle bag, but the original not the edge. But out of my budget, and am considering the customs duty on a Clementine by The Horse.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 26/03/2026 09:14

I would love a big budget! But I think I'd rather spend it on something unique than something everyone is wearing but it's just branded. Also wide legs cover the brand most of the time. But maybe I am incapable of thinking out of my frugal mindset.

I actually think the new fit flop trainers or the Adidas Spezial ones are nicer and even if I was a multi millionaire I'd think the same.

Toomuchprivateinfo · 26/03/2026 10:49

“I am loving building my new wardrobe of high quality timeless pieces” - neither of those pairs of trainers are timeless, they’re on trend and in a year or two will look outdated.

“am I just a fool with a big budget?” Yes.

Ceramiq · 26/03/2026 10:53

High quality timeless pieces don't have visible logos.

Tbh I don't want to wear the same clothes year in and year out - timelessness is good only up to a point. What I want to be timeless is my personal style but not the actual items, which need to move with the times to some extent.

Calliopespa · 26/03/2026 12:15

The Hogan ones @user39056784 posted are my favourite.

The other two are going to look rubbish in no time in those colourways. Do people really spend this much on shoes with only a smattering of leather on them?

I'm easily talked round to a proper pair of leather shoes at these sorts of prices but these are really not things you will want to wear in 12- 18 months time op.

I'm just a bit astonished at the price tbh...

HugoThatway · 26/03/2026 12:28

OhDear111 · 25/03/2026 13:31

@HugoThatway Ok!! Fashion “running” shoe then! It’s just a style of lace up shoe to us mere mortals.

@sixsept , To me trainers is a generic word for 'athleisure footwear' and shoes you wear for physical training. Running shoes are shoes you wear for running (e.g. 10K, marathon) and have been designed for the purpose.

I have no idea what OhDear111 meant. I'd not be going for a jog in the shoes mentioned in the OP.

Calliopespa · 26/03/2026 12:44

I was once told by an architect that rather than fitting out a kitchen with one brand, you should get the best brand for each appliance. He said no-one does the best oven, the best dishwasher, the best hob, the best fridge. Choose from the brand that specialises in that item, rather than getting a branded "suite" of appliances. You're paying for a logo, not picking the best appliance.

I actually often think that with fashion, when fashion houses branch out into luggage etc, and I think L shoes are example of that op. They look wrong to me.

HugoThatway · 26/03/2026 13:01

That's a good analogy @Calliopespa . I got the same brand in my appliances but it was more to do with budget.

Loewe makes some wonderful things but if I wanted trainers I'd go for a brand that has a reputation for making good trainers.

Comefromaway · 26/03/2026 14:44

I love Loewe but I am not much for their shoes. I would advise going in person and trying them on to see how comfortable or not they are. I love a visit to their London store, such great customer service.

Gucci trainers on the other hand are very comfortable. (though I don't like anything with the GG logo myself my husband loves them)

Overitallnow · 26/03/2026 14:45

Both fugly. You can get a really good fake of that bag in Turkey.

Comefromaway · 26/03/2026 15:07

I 100% guarantee that Turkish fake will not have the level of craftmanship that a Loewe bag has. It s one of the few brands (Bottega being another) that has retained the quality and craftsmanship of it's leather goods)

Blarn · 26/03/2026 15:13

The back of the Loewe ones comes up quite high. This would really rub my ankles.

I think if you want neat trainers to go with wide legs, the ballet flat/trainer hybrids are very fashionable right now. Can't make up my mind about them on me but the small neatness does go well with wide jeans. And they are quite summery.

HappyPigeons · 26/03/2026 16:01

I like the Hogans! Have you had a look at Hoka? They’re similarly ‘chunky’ and very comfortable, good range of colours.

HugoThatway · 26/03/2026 16:22

I was thinking Hoka too. Women's Lifestyle Shoes & Trainers | HOKA® UK
They're not my cup of tea but I wear trainers from Women's Trainers at M&S .

What basic looking trainers! Save some money and get decent sportswear running shoes like Nike. My friend had some Loewes trainers and they fall apart, she got a refund and said she’d never spend silly money like that again.
Fact is most of these fashion brands are made in the same factories as low end brands but have different brand names on.
