Loewe ballet runners or Hogan HiFis for jeans and wide legs?

I am a relatively new convert to Loewe and think my almost navy Puzzle bag is possibly one of the nicest I’ve ever owned. I am looking at the Loewe ballet runners which look gorgeous but I’ve also had my head turned by the Hogan HiFis in a similar colour way.

They are mostly to wear with jeans or wide leg trousers. I’ve just bought a gorgeous Veronica Beard Dicky Jacket and matching wide leg trousers in navy linen (not the high crease type) for Summer which is also the sort of thing I would wear trainers with. I’ve dropped from a size 20 to a size 12 over the past couple of years and I am loving building my new wardrobe of high quality timeless pieces.

Am I just a fool with a big budget? I also love my Addidas Spetzials which I have in 6 colours but at 52 I’m looking for something a bit more refined rather than matching with my teenagers. I haven’t ruled out getting the ballet runners and also getting the Hogans in the blue colourway, but since they are different heights it will be difficult to mix and match without tailoring my trousers to somewhere in the middle.

The thoughts of the style icons of MN would be greatly appreciated.

What basic looking trainers! Save some money and get decent sportswear running shoes like Nike. My friend had some Loewes trainers and they fall apart, she got a refund and said she’d never spend silly money like that again.
Fact is most of these fashion brands are made in the same factories as low end brands but have different brand names on.

To be fair, Loewe runners are made in Italy (some of their shoes are made in Spain, I believe). I don't find mine anywhere near as comfortable as I'd like, but they've held up to pretty heavy wear and still look absolutely fine, so your friend must have ended up with an unusual pair.

Can I jump on this thread with a similar trainer dilemma?

I'm considering these Chloe Kick trainers. Has anyone got them> Are Chloe comfortable? Does anyone else do a similar style but cheaper?
What do you think?

As you can tell from my posts above, I'm not opposed to spending for things I really like or that are high quality. My honest feeling is that this look might be very one season, so I'd probably look for something a bit cheaper.

Lots on this thread.

I have Chloe clogs and suede platform sandals and both are well made and really comfortable, but I'm not convinced the style you're looking at would be better enough than Adidas (or similar) to make it a worthwhile spend.

Is there a ballerina trainer or sneakerina that doesn't give Hotter shoes vibes? | Mumsnet

I like comfortable shoes and have loved the trainer trend in recent years but I think that's blowing over. I hear ballerina trainers or sneakerinas (h...

Get a good pair of loafers instead. More current than trainers and a much better look with jeans/wide leg trousers.

Personal bias, but god I hate loafers.

I don't hate them and a few look OK on other people but there's no way I would wear them.

I would go with the hogan Interactive, as they are more of a classic shape , so will not go out of fashion . I live in them , they are so comfy , and I love that they have a ‘platform’ inside so add to your height .

So many different types of loafers and literally the easiest shoe to style!

Much more of a minefield getting the right jean/trouser for the something like the linked Hogans IMO. Very careful styling needed to make work with a wide leg trouser.

Literally (I hate that word) for you maybe. I don't particularly like them. I wouldn't wear them.
If you have a narrow heel and wide-ish sole, they never fit properly

One of my worst ever purchases was about two years ago when I decided to give loafers a try, I bought a chunky pair of Louboutins. They have never left the house.

I should probably stick them on Vinted, actually.

HugoThatway · 27/03/2026 14:13

Women's Loafers | John Lewis I don't think any of those would go with anything I wear and they either look frumpy or like school shoes.

I love my Louboutain Chambeliboat loafers for Summer which I have in a softer grey than the ones linked below. Very comfortable but I find it hard to know what to wear them with apart from a straight legged cropped trouser.

They're boat shoes not loafers IMO. I'm not keen. What's the metal thing for?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/03/2026 15:37

It took ages for the links to load…and I think it was my phone trying to protect my eyes. I’m no fashionista and don’t have anything like your budget so feel free to ignore me, but both those shoes originally posted are hideous in my opinion. But I’m not a fan of brown/beige/greige so probably not the right demographic.

HugoThatway · 27/03/2026 15:40

Maybe I should explain better. i do like them but not the metal bar and they're sort of slip-ons that look like lace ups. They don't look like £695.
They'd suit Jackie Kennedy/Princess Di type outfits IMO.

These are my loafers. I love them

thepoowhispererswife · 27/03/2026 18:19

They are both too chunky to wear with wide legs in my opinion - you need a slimmer shoe to balance out the volume.

Are these the Gucci Brixton? One of my many pairs of loafers (also a fan!).

I think the key to styling loafers is to lean into the opposite aesthetic if that makes sense? I tend to stick to similar outfit formulas as this article

https://www.instyle.com/loafers-with-jeans-outfit-formulas-11866529

Sorry for derailing the thread OP!

Overtheatlantic · 27/03/2026 20:36

I don’t understand the term “Ballet” runners. They both look like sneakers or trainers to me. The Loewe ones are ok. Have you looked at Hoff?

Bowies · 28/03/2026 00:07

I would only get the Hogans if wearing wide leg jeans as well as trousers over the shoe. They will look awful with straight leg jeans or shorter hem.

I've just been through that link and I still despise loafers. I wonder if there's a name for loafer phobia?

Anyway, what did you decide in the end, OP?

StrawberryWasp · 28/03/2026 08:58

Thanks for the links. I'm going to order these instead of the Chloe ones!
Save myself £400!!

Don't forget to order the white sports socks. Smile

TryUmph · 28/03/2026 14:21

OP, buy whatever shoes bring you joy. Nobody’s opinion really matters! If you look at the shoes and they make you smile and can easily afford them, then go for it.
