Help me dress for posh Denmark summer wedding

I’m lucky to have been invited to the summer wedding of an old friend. Without giving too many outing details, she’s Danish, a top professional in her field, no kids, and is marrying into aristocracy (the wedding is at their family house in the Danish countryside, which resembles a stately home). She’s always been incredibly elegant, wafer thin with a capsule of beautifully chosen clothes in quality fabrics. Amazing hair, teeth, skin, very very little makeup.

Im usually found in jeans and boots but like to think I scrub up well. Stumped as to what to wear though. Don’t want to feel like a dumpy English broad among tall willowy athletic Danes. I definitely don’t want to look like I’ve tried too hard - ideally want to look like I dress up and go to insanely posh weddings all the time!

I also have no idea about what’s customary to wear for a wedding there, does anyone know?

Can anyone recommend where to start with an appropriate outfit for the event?

Love the re-use of piano shawl fringing on this. Though some of their reworked pieces verge on the overly hippie-dippie, even for my Florence & the Machine taste!

Not all Irish weddings are though!!

There were similar comments about Scottish weddings on another thread. I am Irish but have lived in Scotland for 40 years. None of the weddings I've been to - in either country - has been "flamboyant" at all! I think it's more to do with the wedding couple's wider family/friendship/social group than nationality & location.

Whereas I still remember the one in Stoke-on-Trent ...

Well yes it was three in the same family/part of Ireland. I really upped my game by the third.

There is something to be said for going as a stereotypical British person at the wedding (whatever that is) and being the interesting international guest.

I love Wolf and Badger and they literally cover ALL bases in terms of different ages, sizes, styles, price brackets...

Something like this would look gorgeous for a summer wedding...

Or

Love the first one, that’s beautiful.

I will stereotype my own nationality by saying that I've never been to a wedding in Ireland that didn't serve at least two kinds of potato side dish ... sometimes even three!!

Unless you are above fifty, do not wear large floral print in Denmark.

Also: While you can get away with a simple hat, do not, for the love of all gods in Asgaard, wear a fascinator. People will giggle. Do not wear a fascinator. Do not.

Why can't you wear a floral print in Denmark if you're over 50?

(agree there's no place for fascinators ever).

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/03/2026 15:45

Disclaimer: I hate Danish weddings, my own included. They make me want to scratch out my eyes with boredom.

Wear similar to what you would for a British wedding minus the hat or fascinator.

The meal will go on for fucking hours so get something that doesn't press on your stomach. There will be a fuck ton of boring unfunny speeches, there might be a few songs instead of speeches and the waiting staff will bring paper round while every body claps with endless verses on them to incredibly dreary songs which no one ever bothers to sing with any kind of gusto, instead choosing to sing like reluctant teenagers. These boring speeches/songs will end with 3 cheers, sometimes ending in a short or a long one. Hoowah hoowah hoowaaaah. If you're really unlucky there will be unfunny "sketches" too. Eventually the couple will dance the wedding waltz and everyone will circle them and move in closer and closer. Then someone will try and steal the grooms socks.

Ok - there is a label that is probably more British than Liberty - Hardy Amies, the Queen's dress designer! That'll impress those Danish aristocrats ...!!

I really love this dress, & it's cheaper than one from Rixo or LK Bennett ... It would also stand out (in an unshowy way) from all the long slip dresses, halternecks, etc that everyone else will almost certainly be wearing ... More fashionable too (if that matters, it doesn't to me as I just think it's beautiful) - drop waists are apparently very "in" right now!

I would go for simple elegance and avoid any prints. One colour, classic accessories and a good pair of sunglasses.

A cape dress would be perfect.

This! All these options are beautiful!

You can’t go wrong with simple elegance. I’d also steer clear of overly bright colours, bold prints, or anything with unusual shapes (like the robe-style option someone suggested earlier).

Mctm · 17/03/2026 17:55

I have attended a Danish wedding where the bride is half English so English friends (me) and family were in attendance. The Brit's were all overdressed! They don't tend to dress particularly smart for their weddings, certainly no hats! No one really wore heels, or if they did, not the stiletto type.
Your example is more nuanced with it being aristocracy so I would get the brides guidance on this

Cecilie Bahnsen. (Though spellcheck regularly objects to her name!)

https://ceciliebahnsen.com/?srsltid=AfmBOooTvSnXoASEKvPXG-y00Xxdwi2sr0EcEBkD7rFyCTnOrWetrZDY

NB - the clothes are intended to be worn by all ages and shapes of women.

Edited

Golly. Some of that is ... challenging. I'm looking especially at the micro floppy shorts with marshmallow shaped top.

The suggestion they are for all shapes and ages has me even more 😳

Some of the dresses are beautiful. Some, as you say, are indeed challenging ...!!

Maybe the OP should channel her inner quirky British eccentric sense of dress - à la Grayson Perry - & wear this ...

I've just spotted the Bahnsen with see-thru pink upper half. Wear that - and report back to us!

PinterandPirandello · 17/03/2026 23:35

The Joseph pieces are very elegant and look close to the brief but I think you’d need to be tall and slim.

I so want to go to a Danish wedding now.

EleanorMc67 · 18/03/2026 01:08

Well, the OP hasn't given her height - or budget! Though her desire not to look dumpy among lots of willowy Danes would imply that she's not 5' 8" or more.

That's what I would consider the threshold for being thought "tall" in the UK - but I think, from my one visit to Denmark, that it's probably quite average there ... & I'm speaking as someone who's 5' 10"!!!

But the more I think about the wedding - & the implication that it's going to full of willowy 6 ft blondes wearing long simple elegant dresses in muted shades - the more I think that the OP shouldn't try to wear something similar?

As she will then inadvertently stand out for wearing the same type of dress as the willowy Danes - but not looking the same (or possibly as good?) in it?

Szerelem · 18/03/2026 01:12

Totally as an aside, make sure you have the option to wrap up warm and be prepared to be offered more to eat and drink than you order in your weekly shop.

One of the best weddings I ever went to was on a Danish island. Have fun!

EleanorMc67 · 18/03/2026 01:17

@RubyFatball - IMO you should - as well as avoiding a Danish dress label - go for something that you love, feel utterly fabulous in, & that really suits your colouring & shape. I would also choose something from a British label - & personally would go full vintage British & veer towards the slightly eccentric!

I'm thinking Florence Welch, Suzie Cave, Pearl Lowe or Alice Temperley. Romantic, floral, wafty & gorgeous. Embrace it & make the Danes feel boring & staid - & really envious & admiring of your outfit, OP!!!

EleanorMc67 · 18/03/2026 01:35

Florence in some pretty fab outfits.
