Help me dress for posh Denmark summer wedding

I’m lucky to have been invited to the summer wedding of an old friend. Without giving too many outing details, she’s Danish, a top professional in her field, no kids, and is marrying into aristocracy (the wedding is at their family house in the Danish countryside, which resembles a stately home). She’s always been incredibly elegant, wafer thin with a capsule of beautifully chosen clothes in quality fabrics. Amazing hair, teeth, skin, very very little makeup.

Im usually found in jeans and boots but like to think I scrub up well. Stumped as to what to wear though. Don’t want to feel like a dumpy English broad among tall willowy athletic Danes. I definitely don’t want to look like I’ve tried too hard - ideally want to look like I dress up and go to insanely posh weddings all the time!

I also have no idea about what’s customary to wear for a wedding there, does anyone know?

Can anyone recommend where to start with an appropriate outfit for the event?

That is absolutely beautiful 😍

I would go for simple elegance and avoid any prints. One colour, classic accessories and a good pair of sunglasses.

A cape dress would be perfect.

With a very stylish & elegant bride marrying into Danish aristocracy, I would think that the aristocracy part is more relevant than the nationality of the wedding couple & guests.

I think it's likely that the unwritten dress code would be more akin to the weddings of UK nobility. After all, you can't say that all British weddings are alike, so I doubt that an average Danish wedding would necessarily have a lot in common with that of Danish aristocrats?

(Although on a recent thread, a few people were insistent that weddings in Scotland were much dressier than elsewhere in the UK ... They all agreed that a Spandex polka-dot bodycon dress - which was strapless with completely bared shoulders, & cut away for full side-boob overspill - was completely suitable for Scottish weddings. Not for any of the ones I've been to in the last forty years!!)

We went to a fairly posh wedding in Denmark a couple years ago (although not as posh as yours sounds!) and I think some of these would have fit in really well https://bernadetteantwerp.com/en-gb/collections/skirts

And Saloni is worth a look

I really like the drama of some of the Bernadette dresses & skirts. And the Saloni one is beautiful - & silk!!!

I used to live in Denmark and went to a few weddings there, including a ‘posh’ one - what I noticed is that Dane’s don’t dress up as much as brits do at weddings, so I’d be careful not to go too OTT

Danish here, although this poster probably has more experience of Danish weddings than me! I'd agree with her.

Simple, elegant dress, but much less effort with hair and makeup. You should look like you're barely wearing anything on your face, people love to be natural and dressing up is seeing a little 'new money/gold digger'. In the summer, light colours are strongly favoured, i.e. you'd expect the men to be in beige, light blue etc - dresscodes are a little less traditional in some ways. Would recommend a summery colour pallet along similar lines. It is uncommon to wear bright colours and loud patterns in Scandinavia, so if you were to wear red, dark green, royal blue, pink, you may stand out.

I don't dress so Danish anymore, and wear a lot of red, pink etc, and draw stares whenever I'm there, so... don't wear anything Sofia Vergara would wear for example 😂

Not actually sure what to recommend, but this designer is what Scandi royals wear a lot on formal occassions, so may give you some ideas: https://lillijahilo.com/collections/dresses

I've been to a Danish wedding (not aristocracy!). It was fabulous fun.

There was a bit of a gap between the ceremony and the reception and a few people obviously went to change. The ceremony itself was a bit different. I don't speak Danish so had no idea what was going on but the bride and groom shouted their responses - sounded a bit like Sergeant Majors! (This may have been a them thing rather than a Danish tradition)

The reception meal had about 9 courses, with a short speech and a toast with punsch after every one. The other thing that happened is people would start to bang their plates with cutlery and the bride and groom had to stand on their chairs and kiss.

Then bizarrely , at the end there was an "after party" where all the women got on a bus with the bride (no idea where the blokes went) and went to a nightclub. We got a bus back to the city centre about 3am.

I would say the dress code was just like it is here. Some were very formal, some were more casual. Not many ties worn. Not many hats.

Have the best time!

Love that blue dress @MsPossibly

I would avoid scandi style and instead maybe try to channel a Princess of Wales vibe - you actually should like you look bit like Kate! maybe go British like other posters have said.

Or alternatively id look at dresses by Pink City Prints - -they have a relaxed boho vibe but are very pretty!

Based on other Scandinavian experience, I think @ElleintheWoods is right.

Light, summery colours. No hats, fascinators, excessively high heels, or anything too fussy. Natural look, well groomed but not lots of makeup. If dress is sexy, then subtly so because it enhances a well trained body, rather than trussed up. No cleavage.

Find out about the timing and format of the day, because if the main event is lunch, that’d be different from a 4pm wedding and an evening party. Or an early ceremony and a change for the evening.

Ceremony in church? Garden?

I might go for an elegant kaftan-style dress myself. Saw one of those at a v fancy Scandi party recently worn to great effect.

But something in a nice fabric and a colour and shape that suits you. I think that’s one of the reasons Scandinavians often look good (other than health and exercise) - they take a lot of trouble to find clothes which suit them individually.

I’d also avoid buying Danish to minimize likelihood of matching anyone.

I reckon so, especially if it’s a mainly daytime event.

I like this for example

Unless you are above fifty, do not wear large floral print in Denmark.

Also: While you can get away with a simple hat, do not, for the love of all gods in Asgaard, wear a fascinator. People will giggle. Do not wear a fascinator. Do not.

Squatbox · 16/03/2026 19:43

Been to many posh danish weddings

they are raucous, even the posh ones. Especially the posh ones

wear a long dress with sensible shoes underneath- it’s an event

think simple elegance, no bits hanging out and despite people being aghast at a print…I definitely saw young women in florals last summer. Danish women!

there are loads of speeches, lots of bashing stuff (the bride and groom have to stand and kiss) and the men all strip off on the dance floor

Pretty perfect for a summer wedding I reckon, especially if there’s a large daytime element. (Mind you in the summer even 11pm is pretty light, so…. 🙈)

I’d only question if it maybe has too much white?

What an exciting event to dress up for! I agree that Scandinavians tend not to be as dressy in general. We have Swedish family and the last wedding I went to there was very smart but also pretty heavy on the unstructured linen, with the bride in a beautiful, ethereal ivory lace gown. Of course everyone looked gorgeous on account of being Swedish.

However, maybe it will be different if it’s high society? If so, I think I’d lean into the British theme and go for Erdem. It’s an investment but you can’t go wrong with the dresses, they are amazing. I’ve got two and they’ve seen me through loads of smart weddings and posh summer events.

If money were no object I second Erdem.

If budget is generous Cawley Studio or Renli Su.

If budget is lower, Klements or Sister Jane.
