Help me dress for posh Denmark summer wedding

I’m lucky to have been invited to the summer wedding of an old friend. Without giving too many outing details, she’s Danish, a top professional in her field, no kids, and is marrying into aristocracy (the wedding is at their family house in the Danish countryside, which resembles a stately home). She’s always been incredibly elegant, wafer thin with a capsule of beautifully chosen clothes in quality fabrics. Amazing hair, teeth, skin, very very little makeup.

Im usually found in jeans and boots but like to think I scrub up well. Stumped as to what to wear though. Don’t want to feel like a dumpy English broad among tall willowy athletic Danes. I definitely don’t want to look like I’ve tried too hard - ideally want to look like I dress up and go to insanely posh weddings all the time!

I also have no idea about what’s customary to wear for a wedding there, does anyone know?

Can anyone recommend where to start with an appropriate outfit for the event?

Unless you are above fifty, do not wear large floral print in Denmark.

Also: While you can get away with a simple hat, do not, for the love of all gods in Asgaard, wear a fascinator. People will giggle. Do not wear a fascinator. Do not.

Were Stine Goya exporting all their floral dresses then? There's no no floral in this season but for recent years large floral prints were a signature look. Here's 3 of many.

Dress as you. Remember, Sandi Toksvig is Danish too!

The scenario sounds like the start of a rom com...😍

Zimmerman or Alemais

How about Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham or Edeline Lee? Ulla Johnson does the occasional winner as well.

i think this is really gorgeous for a summer wedding.

I like that for summer generally, but when you look at the petite version, presumably photographed in a different light, it’s no where near as nice !

I adore the My Theresa dress on page 1 of the comments. Heels, simple jewellery and hair in a sleek up-do will look very elegant, and maybe swap out hair clips for day and evening.

It would look elegantly English.

This thread is the opposite of the Irish Wedding thread. Irish weddings are surprisingly dressy and flamboyant!
I went to a Swedish wedding it was very boring in terms of outfits. Very reserved, very classic plain top and skirt etc. not wafty or boho, no hats or hairpieces. I’m assuming it’s the same…

LostThestral · 17/03/2026 11:48

sorry but I think that's awful - looks like a dressing gown

Not all Irish weddings are though!!

There were similar comments about Scottish weddings on another thread. I am Irish but have lived in Scotland for 40 years. None of the weddings I've been to - in either country - has been "flamboyant" at all! I think it's more to do with the wedding couple's wider family/friendship/social group than nationality & location.

Whereas I still remember the one in Stoke-on-Trent ...

You stay classy, San Diego. Absolutely love this.

ah good point - im showing my age as im over 50! and that would be my dress of choice ha ha

I am in my fifties too and find myself liking floral print more and more. Also lace, beads, and embroidery.

Fimofriend · 17/03/2026 12:16

Women above fifty buy clothes too. We don't all weave our own fabric.

@RubyFatball Have you given an idea of your budget yet? As that is rather important ... As if it's very generous, I'd just bypass everything else & go for Erdem too - one for every day that you're there!

I don't quite get the PPs saying what you should or shouldn't wear at a Danish wedding. Does that mean that you too MUST avoid florals or bright colours? Isn't that unnecessarily conformist (for an already conformist event in any circumstances)? I'd say go for what you love, suits you, is wedding-appropriate in the broader sense, & is in budget! (Well, I'd break the last one for something I really loved!)

Also, I'm quite sure that there are plenty of weddings in Denmark where people wear pink or red or green & bright florals - maybe even all at the same time ...

Weddings - I think the basic rule at the majority of weddings (even nowadays & at non-church weddings, I would say) is that you don't wear a pure white/ivory dress (beyond that, cream/white with floral pattern is fine, green is fine, red is fine, black is fine - in the right fabric - all those vetoes on MN are not a nation-wide norm!). And no bits of side boob or cleavage spilling out or a dress so tight that you can see your nipples/underwear outline ... Usually (but not always) no minis.

Aristocratic weddings - probably more conformist than above, just like here. Aristocratic Danish weddings - probably more stylish than above!!! And definitely more stylish than British aristocratic weddings ...

I would absolutely go for a British designer, &/or vintage. Preferably both!! But I have to say (& I know I post these same two dresses on every damn wedding thread going ...), what could be better than Liberty??!!! Iconic British label, shop, prints ...???

(These come in other prints, OP - I just happen to love green ...)

Not one I'd normally think of for wedding wear - but this Paul Smith one is rather nice?

If you do want to stick to a cleaner look (because you like it, not because you're following "rules"!!!), Joseph does that very well (yes he was Moroccan but it's a British brand. Thank God for immigrants ...).

Are you seriously suggesting no woman under 50 should wear floral? Or that Stine Goya floral is only aimed at women over 50?

banivani · 17/03/2026 13:11

Do you have a dresscode stated on the invitation?

Christ, if that's the case I've been doing it all wrong for three decades, as I have a wardrobe full of florals ... Lucky that I've now come back into fashion in my last decade! Though I don't own a Stine Goya dress - yet ...

Gardenquestion22 · 17/03/2026 13:20

I'm absolutely loving some of these suggestions.

FWIW the Joseph stuff looks like the closest to what I'd have in mind - or a Ghost dress perhaps...
