Going to a wedding early June and I have bought this, it looks nice on buy not sure if I will go with it yet. I am blonde with a tan 5 feet 3 size 10. Is it ok and if so please can you suggest shoes, bag, jacket or cardigan and a fascinator. Thanks very much

It’s a lovely dress.
You could pick out the turquoise in your shoes etc, or accessorise with more colours but which include the turquoise.
Or silver/ gold?

Travelcrazy · 10/03/2026 08:44

The background is quite white not cream

@holidayonkirrinisland thanks very much for your reply, what do you think would be best?

I think black shoes (pointy sling back) and hat with a turquoise bag, the dress is bold and already has three colours in it, I think adding another colour could be too much.

Petrine · 10/03/2026 10:03

I think the dress is very nice. I'd go for black shoes and bag. Personally I wouldn't wear a fascinator as the dress has quite a bold pattern.

Whatkindoffuckeryisthiss · 10/03/2026 10:05

Black shoes and bag. Maybe incorporate turquoise into jewellery, nail varnish, or hair accessory.
It’s a lovely dress!

YourWinter · 10/03/2026 10:06

It’s the same style as the Phase Eight dress I wore for DD1’s wedding, but mine was more silvery/navy so no help with colours. I wore a choker-length chunky silver necklace grey peep-toe slingback shoes, grey suede clutch bag, and a navy fascinator from John Lewis

Everlil · 10/03/2026 10:10

I wouldn’t say it was fashionable, but a lot of people wear more traditional clothes for a wedding. The colours are very cool, does that work with your tanned skin? You could warm it up with a coral or orange jacket. Personally I would get rid of the sash, I think that contributes to the old fashioned feel. No fascinator or hat. Flat slingbacks in black would work as suggest previously.

TroubledBloodyMary · 10/03/2026 10:24

I’d call it vintage rather than dated!

Agree you could lose the sash; replace with a good quality narrow black leather belt. (And adjust the belt loops to support the belt properly so it stays in the right place.)

Pillbox hats are suddenly hugely fashionable - maybe look for one in black straw.

I would avoid any cardigan - or you’ll be cosplaying MadMen, which is really not what you want. Keep your accessories purely contemporary. And not too dainty.

Travelcrazy · 10/03/2026 11:43

Thanks for all the replies. @TroubledBloodyMary i would look hideous in that hat and boots but I appreciate your help.
Personally I like the sash but I am probably old fashioned! I will try a leather belt though. Any more suggestions very much appreciated thank you 😊

I'd go with black shoes and bag, white or ivory jacket. Make the most of the turquoise blooms and sash by leaving them as the only coloured elements - although I agree that some turquoise jewellery might work rather well. Otherwise I'd stick to a monochrome palette.

No idea if the dress would be considered dated, but I love that monochrome plus one highlight colour, judiciously used, look.

Travelcrazy · 10/03/2026 12:08

@LadybirdsProcessing thank you, what style of jacket would work please?

LadybirdsProcessing · 11/03/2026 19:12

Hmm. I think it's as much down to personal taste and figure as anything else, although with that dress I'd avoid anything too boxy (would detract from the sash waist and flaring of the skirt), oversized or bulky at the shoulders. The skinnier and more flat-chested you are, the easier it will be to get away with something fairly unstructured (although I still think big shoulders are a no). I like linen for summer and I like classic blazers so I would try on linen blazers!

I'd also look at slightly shorter, tailored jackets. I had a very quick look for some possibilities. Ignore the prices, I just wanted to suggest some shapes that might be worth considering. I rather like the slight shaping at the waist on this one (looks hideous closed, but since you wouldn't ever wear it like that it's a reasonable option). On the model this is too cropped for my taste, but it might sit marginally below the waist on you and would look smart and contemporary - you need to supply your own waist though, given the cut. This has some tailoring, yet doesn't look too officewear - and genuine pockets! This looks chic and beautifully cut although it's hard to be sure of the shape without more photos (grrr).

Someone else may have a different take, of course...

OneNewEagle · 11/03/2026 20:26

It’s a lovely vintage style I like it and turquoise should suit you if you are fair.

I would wear it with neutral sandals and a turquoise bag and earrings, it’s a colour that suits me.

my only worry, if it was me wearing it not you, is that it’s white. I’d not wear a white based dress to any wedding.

I think the sash is nice, the turquoise is a lovely colour.

Whatwouldnanado · 11/03/2026 20:33

I am same size snd colouring and would love this. I love the colour of belt. Don’t wear a fascinator. Black flats, black bag and silver jewellery. White cropped jacket. Have fun.

How old are you OP?

it’s quite dated, I expected you to say it was something you already owned and wanted to see if you could get away with it. I think you could find better new.

Came to say the same, if you are over 65 then go for it, otherwise it will be quite aging.

Yep this.

As PP said, people tend to wear more classic styles to weddings so unless it's dull of trendies noone is going to be judging, but it's not a current look.

Do the colours really suit you? That makes all the difference.

hobbledyhoy · 11/03/2026 22:22

Yeah in all honesty it’s not a particularly fashionable cut or print but I don’t think many would bat an eye at a wedding.

faerylights · 11/03/2026 23:08

It looks very dated to me and totally the wrong colour for a wedding.

Sigh, why do you think it would be fine for some one over 65?

It's dated but it's OK. It'll be fine for a wedding if the wearer doesn't want to buy anything new. It won't stand out as terrific (in the good sense) or terrible. If it needs a jacket I'd put a short, boxy black jacket over it. The 2 Hobbs jackets linked by a pp would make it even more dated.

Zanatdy · 13/03/2026 06:05

I am no fashion expert but I wore a a very similar dress but different colour for friends wedding 16yrs ago. I’d say it’s a little dated but I personally like it, and I’d go for turquoise accessories over black for a wedding.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 13/03/2026 06:45

It looks like a repro 1950s dress and I don’t say this lightly because I used to live in 1950s clothing but yes this is an aged look now.
