Tummytroublesagain1 · 01/03/2026 15:35

Currently swooning over most things in ME+EM. Why oh why does it have to be so nice but soooo expensive

ive been to the store in Manchester and do have a couple of items but I could literally buy so much more if only I could afford it

does anyone have any cheaper alternative that are just a gorgeous?

It's not a fact. My experience of being 5'3" is that it is vanishingly rare that I ever have to get things altered. I don't buy petite. I buy standard sizes. At most dresses and coats will be slightly longer than me than on the model. I don't know if this is because the information isn't accurate or the models are wearing model versions to show what the item looks like in real life on the average woman.

Here's 2 examples of dresses I own

https://caseycasey.eu/products/Stephanie-dress-white
Model is 5'8"
This dress is pretty much the same on me.

https://klements.co.uk/products/dusk-dress-in-doomed-voyage-print-sorbet-port?variant=42760402141342
Model here is 5'10". This dress is ankle length on me but doesn't drag on the pavement.

I could give you loads of other examples. Most women are under 5'8" - what is the point of making clothes which won't fit most women?

Well, that's all fine and dandy if that is what you like.

If you buy midi length dresses worn on models 6ft tall, they are going to be maxi on you at 5 3". That's the simple maths.

But it's ankle length on her!

Maybe you aren't 5 3 at all! Makes me wonder how a maxi dress worn by a tall model is wearable for you if she's 7 inches taller.

To be fair I also don’t understand that, their dresses at 142 cm long (on average, with a small deviation up or down of a cm based on size), and at 5 foot 6 and a half that dress would drag on the floor for me. By a few cms. So I don’t understand either how it is ankle length on someone 3 and a half inches shorter.

their dress lengths and the model heights directly correlate. It would be ankle length on the model given the length of the dress, so the poster appears to be saying the dresses on the model are not what’s actually sold and they are actually seven inches shorter, but thay would be very unusual as they would have lots of returns.

so yeah, I’m finding that a bit weird.

Pumpkincatbow · 05/03/2026 08:16

I would love to buy me and em but so much of it is unsuitable for my large norks - unnecessary frills, puff sleeves, round necks rather than v or scoop. I find Boden much better for "clean" tailored items. Might try me and em trousers.

I have been measured on several occasions by nurses at a hospital in the last 2 years. They check my weight and height. I thought I was 5' 4". They confirmed 5'3". Do you think they got it wrong?

I've seen some of their knitwear lately on Vinted. New with tags, but for suspiciously cheap prices, also always an odd amount eg £38.65. Would you say that they are likely to be fakes?

I love Vinted, but there are bucketloads of fakes on there. Sezane is also huge for this. Often they are things like this, which is the least Me + Em looking garment I’ve ever seen. Surely this is not, and never was, a Me + Em line?

I often look at the Sezane ones and am bemused that people seem to buy anything advertised as Sezane, whether it resembles their stock or not. This cardigan would come under that heading for me.

I think their trousers look amazing, but most of them are so long, and so expensive. I have not been brave enough to try them yet (I hate returning things)!

Don't believe it if you like but maybe have a think about why brands would make clothes which are apparently only wearable by women 5'8" and taller. Most UK are not that tall. I have 2 of the Klements dresses in that style. Neither drag on the pavement.

You should have the courage of your convictions - no need to edit your post. In real life the Klements dresses get loads of compliments.

But they give the dress lengths, so what you’re saying is they are lying and actually selling dresses several inches shorter. And that is very odd indeed.

I’m sure they do, that one’s gorgeous. I only wish I could get away with something like that. We’re back to the usual MN aversion to oversized, loose clothes which inevitably draw insults - nightie, sack, Amish - I wish people could just say “Not for me” and move on instead of insulting those of us whose style is a bit different from the usual high street.

I agree, people should be polite about each others clothing or style choices. I don’t really get the point of attacking, it’s not that deep or a personal insult someone likes something different to you.

The klements dress is a little more niche, than me and em, which is more classic and wider appeal, assuming you’ve the deep pockets for either and you can find knock offs effectively in many lower priced brands for either.

i still am confused about the poster saying the dresses klements sells are significantly shorter than they say they are, but I’ve never bought one, however a quick google sees lots of confirmation the length is as per the website. It would need to be 18cm shorter than their lengths to fit the same, or 7 inches. It’s very significant. Their dresses are known to be long.

Sesma · 05/03/2026 09:55

That long Klements dress if it is 142cm would probably be about ankle length or to shoe tops on me at 5'10", so probably about right though I would also have to hope the sleeves were long enough also in that style,

Nanda66 · 05/03/2026 09:57

Prompted by this thread I’ve decided to make sure I wear my nice clothes more often. So today I’m wearing my Me and Em palazzo pants and a pink wool Me and Em hoodie (I bought the hoodie on Vinted for a bargain price and it’s lovely) even though I’m just working from home. The only Me and Em items I own! Although I have a blouse on the way, thanks to this thread.

hashisucks · 05/03/2026 10:29

I’m only 5’2 but have a wardrobe full of Me+Em. My style is quite pared back so I go for the simpler styles but find them to be good quality and last years. I go for their jeans (these sometimes come in a short length which is perfect - I’ve got a 29” inside leg and am short-bodied), trousers (yes I do have to alter but what’s new), and blouses (silk cotton and cheesecloth). I have a couple of pairs of silk velvet trousers for winter occasion wear. I REALLY wish they’d do petite blazers! I’ve also got a couple of jersey sets which are fab for travelling. I avoid the £££ polyester dresses though.

Recent fave purchases have been these and some tapered pinstriped trousers which are an amazing flattering shape, OOS unfortunately.

Just hoping that the recent expansion into the USA doesn’t lead to costs going up and quality going down - this has happened with other brands I’ve liked in the past and is typical where there are equity partners to answer to.

Well, as said upthread I'm 5ft7 and the trousers are always too long for me. I don't think I have short legs, but someone 5ft6in said they worked brilliantly on her because her legs were long. So maybe I've had positive dysmorphia about my legs all my long life! Anyway, when I next pass one of the shops I may try a pair on to see if there's been any change in length over the years because my every experience has been trouser legs trailing in the mud necessitating ££ take-ups, which aren't worth it.

i guess it’s just body shapes, I did post a pic of me in the regular jeans, which is 32 inside leg, and they just skim at my foot and heel as you can see, and I’m half an inch shorter than you. @hashisucks also just posted they are 5ft 2 and have a 29 inside leg,

i don’t think it means you’ve short legs as such, don’t worry, I’m sure you’re in proportion, more you likely don’t have a 32 inch inside leg so they are too long.

and no the leg length hasn’t changed, it’s typically 31 or 32 for their trousers or jeans, which I find perfect but will be too long/short for others.

Floisme · 05/03/2026 10:58

I'm 5'3 and the wide leg trousers I've tried were far too long and I didn't like them enough to buy and then shorten them. However this thread has reminded me that I do have some of their cropped combat trousers and the length is great on me, (although admittedly I like my cropped trousers to be on the long side). But I've still hardly worn them and I think it's because, even though they're a casual style, there's something very formal about them.

I think that's true of a lot of their clothes - it's not just that I never had a job that required corporate dressing, it's also that everything they do - even their jeans and T shirts - looks very slick whereas I'm more drawn to something a bit grungier.

hashisucks · 05/03/2026 11:17

Just to add - as a shortie who has had to alter trousers for decades - I invested in an overlocker machine in the sales last year and can do a pro job at home now. Previously I’ve had to add the cost of alterations in my head to anything I buy. I’d always just been resigned to that!

Klements site doesn't give the dress length. According to Wolf and Badger it is 140cm. That's 55". I'm 63" or 160 cm Even allowing for head from centre of neck a 140cm dress isn't gong to trail. It's long ankle length and even low heels will make it "shorter"

The Casey Casey dress I linked is 126cm or 49.6 inches.

Do you (general you) think brands are producing clothes which only a tiny proportion of women can wear?

Dyptique · 05/03/2026 13:33

I completely agree @hashisucks- I really hope they don’t increase prices due to expansion. Although I love what I have, they would certainly lose me at that point. It’s currently at the outer edge of what is acceptable for me.

stickystick · 05/03/2026 13:55

I’m wearing a burnt orange Me+em cashmere cardigan today. It’s the sort of thing I feel like Boden used to do but don’t anymore. Having said that it’s still Made in China.

PeonyPatch · 05/03/2026 13:56

MidnightMeltdown · 01/03/2026 16:06

I really don’t get Me+EM. People rave about it so I’ve considered trying it, but I’ve never seen anything on the website that I like enough to order. The basics look similar to COS or Jigsaw which are both cheaper, and the prints are hideous to my eye. For example:

https://www.meandem.com/maxi-skirt-co-ord-cinnamon-multi
https://www.meandem.com/relaxed-knit-tee-co-ord-pink-multi

I’d love to know what people find to buy in there. Maybe things look better when you see them in person.

I agree. Some of it’s nice, but the price tag is so unjustifiable.

Liquidacrobat · 05/03/2026 14:19

As said in previous posts I love the brand but one annoying thing is that I have never managed to find any reviews of the clothes on their website. Have I been missing something?

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · 05/03/2026 14:49

Interesting about reviews. I read them if they’re there (Toast reviewers are always entertaining and sometimes brutal!) but I don’t actually need them for brands I know and trust. Or for places new to me that seem to know what they’re doing in terms of cut, fabric, sizing, provenance.

Bigcat25 · 05/03/2026 14:54

Sessun might be a good/cheaper alternative.
