Currently swooning over most things in ME+EM. Why oh why does it have to be so nice but soooo expensive

ive been to the store in Manchester and do have a couple of items but I could literally buy so much more if only I could afford it

does anyone have any cheaper alternative that are just a gorgeous?

I can take or leave a lot of their patterns but their jeans are fabulous!!! Buttery soft, fit fabulously and come in a proper long leg.

watchingthishtread · 01/03/2026 21:40

Nothing else on the high street comes close in terms of quality but there's no denying it is very expensive.

Willowskyblue · 01/03/2026 21:46

I buy one thing in the sales each time but lust over the catalogue each month. The quality, fabric and cut is excellent and the garments look and feel expensive when you wear them, which is what you want at those prices.

CraftandGlamour · 01/03/2026 21:49

I have a few things from Me&Em. I have a royal blue midi dress that I picked up in the sale (half price) a couple of years ago and its absolutely beautiful and more than earned its place in my wardrobe. The block colour and shape is dramatic, the fabric weighty yet easy enough to throw in a suitcase. Lots of really lovely styling details. Plus pockets.

I recently purchased a wide legged corduroy jumpsuit in navy from ebay - and its such a flattering cut. I feel great in it.

The only thing I've paid full price for is a wide brimmed straw hat with a silk ribbon band/tie. I fell in love with it the minute I saw it. It's incredibly classy (it was also eye wateringly expensive, gah) but practical. I decided to treat myself after I was put on biologics as they've made me hyper sensitive to the sun. That's my excuse anyway.

I get compliments on these items every time I wear them. That says something, I think. Still, I agree very expensive and the dresses can be a bit too fussy print-wise. Plus their clothes don't always fit curvier shapes so it can be a bit trial and error to find the styles in their range that suit me. I can't stand all the dropped waist stuff they've been pushing over the last year. Great if you're tall and willowy but horrendous on anyone else. The quality however is top notch.

I love the idea of Me and Em more than the reality, although find a couple of gems each season. I have quite soft colouring and so many of the colours and fabrics don’t suit me at all. And being little limits the style options as well.

That having been said, I’ve got a lovely cropped navy cashmere sweater that I’ve worn and worn, and their silk/ cotton blend blouses are perfect with jeans for a dressy lunch. The baby cord is also soft and feels gorgeous.

The quality and design is definitely much better than most high street brands (although I still rate Hobbs for quality) and infinitely better than other online offers, like Boden.

My favourite brand at the moment is Poetry. I love the softness of the cuts and colours and use of natural fabrics.

I have this blouse, it looks stunning with jeans

That blouse is stunning. It’s made for jeans!

I’m drawn to a lot of their blouses but unfortunately they are out of my price range.

I went into the Manchester store last weekend, I was excited as I've just lost quite a bit of weight and had seen their clothes online and wanted to buy something but nothing at all appealed to me unfortunately.

Did you find their staff really rude? I think the Manchester store staff have a really bad attitude

FloofBunny · 02/03/2026 01:59

Just had a quick look and honestly, Marks and Boden do very similar stuff for a lot less money.

That is indeed a stunning blouse.

I can't bring myself to pay Me&Em prices. Jigsaw, Whistles, Mint Velvet, Cos, Boden, Brora - all good and similar.

I try to buy natural fabrics, wool, cashmere, linen, cotton, 100% if possible, very high % if not. Easy to do in the shops I like.

I didn’t really have any contact with them, but yes I know what you mean. Very haughty looks coming from them.

Elektra1 · 02/03/2026 07:07

I’ve been living in a pair of Me & Em barrel leg joggers I got in last winter’s sale. They’re only joggers but so well cut, people ask me in the street where they’re from. I got a similar pair from Zara but they are nowhere near as nice.

Janeaway · 02/03/2026 11:20

Agree that Me + Em fabrics are really very good. I find their skirts and dresses too long for me, plus I can seldom afford their prices. I do like a lot of their stuff, though.

sociableintrovert123 · 02/03/2026 11:57

Almost every item of clothing I buy is from Me and Em. The quality is fantastic. It is pricy but I would perhaps buy one item of clothing every month if you can afford it and you would slowly build up a great wardrobe.
I agree some of the prints are a bit much but I don’t expect to like everything they sell.
Also I have sold the odd blouse on Vinted and it sells within minutes so great resell value! I never buy on Vinted as I think they are always listed at too high a price for second hand. I buy in the sales a lot too.

Umbilicat · 02/03/2026 12:31

Agree, the quality is superb. But I only have a couple of things - have ordered loads and sent nearly all back as most just doesn't suit me for whatever reason. And their trousers are ridiculously long, I'm 5ft7in and they trail along the ground, which may look fabulous in photos but is just not practical. I've had some taken up but it was a faff.

SirEddaVey · 02/03/2026 12:37

@MidnightMeltdown , the quality and cut is far better than COS and Jigsaw.

I don't particularly like ME+EM's clothes but I can see why others like them.

I don't see the appeal of COS.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/03/2026 13:01

I used to really like them, unfortunately they seem to have gone a bit twee recently, while the prices are going into the silly-for-what-it-is category.

I think that is hideous. Sorry. It would completely drain my skin and looks like something from the 1960s.

The few bits I have from there feel like they’ll last forever in terms of quality. Most of it I got on Vinted. Some things were new with tags. Might be an idea…

Tiddlywinkly · 02/03/2026 13:52

I have a few of their t-shirts and blouses. The quality is great. I love their cheesecloth items. They work so beautifully in hot weather and don't need ironing.

That's it though. I am short, so the trousers are out and I can't afford £200 plus on one item unless it's very special.

stickystick · 02/03/2026 17:30

Have bought too much from them before in last 12 months and have resolved to only buy in sale now…. Trousers definitely the most successful items although they all have to be taken up, even the “short” length ones, and I am 5’5.

Kept

  • pair of biscuit coloured wide leg trousers - v Katherine Hepburn
  • tomato red silk high neck top - love this
  • midnight blue wide leg trousers - for when I need to impress
  • same style in red, possibly less successful but very cheerful
  • reversible belt, immediately got nicked from a hotel room in France 😢

Returned

  • biscuit coloured oversize blazer - enormous and unflattering, even sized down
  • alpaca dress - bit dowdy
  • brown cord skirt ditto
  • grey rib long sleeved top - didn’t fit right

Oh i've been in twice and they were lovely - as are the ones in the Selfridges concession. We were laughing with them when the markets were on as they had some chicken stall outside the store and the queue was massive, she was saying yes it's like this all day every day you can't believe it can you for chicken.
