Tummytroublesagain1 · 01/03/2026 15:35

Currently swooning over most things in ME+EM. Why oh why does it have to be so nice but soooo expensive

ive been to the store in Manchester and do have a couple of items but I could literally buy so much more if only I could afford it

does anyone have any cheaper alternative that are just a gorgeous?

I think the issue with their dresses is too many are sleeveless (I need sleeves for my arms), too many high necks, too long, too much black and quite heavy fabrics for summer. The other styles (dare I say it) can be found with other brands even the dreaded Boden, Jigsaw, Whistles, maybe Sandro, etc.

There are a few nice pretty summer dresses but the models are very tall and can carry off the big prints.

I profoundly disagree with the "only look good on the tall model" stance whether said of Me + Em or any other brand

SirEddaVey · 04/03/2026 14:27

I profoundly disagree with the "only look good on the tall model" stance whether said of Me + Em or any other brand Many clothes are cut for women who are of a 'boyish ' shape.

The green trouser suit looks fine on the model but not so good on a woman who's about 5'6" even though she's slim.

From a description on a trouser suit on the site:
"Model is a UK size 8, wearing a UK size 8
Model height is 5'10.5” / 179cm
Fits true to size"

I find this quite misogynistic. I find it the opposite. I find the expectation of women to wear floral demure or body-con/skimpy dresses misogynistic.

I want sleeves and pockets.

@NotsosweetCaroline,and I dislike clothes designed to make me look harmless (in the workplace) to men.

Edited

I have no idea what on earth you’re talking about, but you clearly have some issues, I am senior and corporate, none of the woman got there as they looked like they wouldn’t be any trouble. They got there through sheer hard work and skill.

I also don’t understand your point of clothes being made to look harmless to men, I strongly suspect you tried to sound clever and failed drastically. It simply sounds batshit.

SirEddaVey · 04/03/2026 14:36

@Notsosweetcaroline , when I first started work decades ago and was a trainee [professional], I was asked why couldn't I dress like a female colleague.
I was trying to look corporate with my suit and straight bobbed hair. My colleague, an administrator/clerk, had permed hair in an updo and wore floral tea dresses.

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · 04/03/2026 14:37

I said that’s my perception of the clothes. I merely expressed that feeling, on an anonymous forum. I’m not trying to impose my perception on anyone else. And have no interest in ‘trying to sound clever’ here. (That would be pointless.)

Stop taking my idle comments so literally and personally. I’m perfectly well aware (none better) of the amount of hard work and skill required to succeed as a working woman.

No sorry you don’t get to lob it in and then run away and hide behind your sofa.

someone presents misogynistic views they deserve to be called out on it every time. And the last place I expected that sort of bitterness was a thread about a a clothing brand, it’s one thing to say not my taste, but to then equate it to women looking harmless and that’s how they are promoted by men is an unacceptable Level of misogyny and sexism.

@SirEddaVey sure, decades ago, but the world has moved on.

The expectation of whom? I am certainly not expected to wear floral dresses or body skimming clothes and quite frankly I’d likely be told I was unprofessional if I did, or it would hamper my ability to proceed, as it would if a man came in in tight trousers and a muscle tee..

SirEddaVey · 04/03/2026 14:56

Oh look an echo from another thread which sneered at lowly administrators. Your comments come across as very misogynistic.

I have this
https://www.meandem.com/balloon-sleeve-slim-layering-top-black

and this
https://www.meandem.com/intricate-embroidery-blouse-soft-white

Both bought specifically to wear with sleeveless dress/pinafore. They're perfect and were exactly what I was looking for.

Those blouses are the only items on the list I would actually purchase & definitely not the dresses. The argyle top reminds me of an old fashioned golf jumper but its all a matter of taste.

I don’t know what society you inhibit professionally or personally but I am not expected to wear body skimming dresses or floral ones. Neither is my daughter, she wears trouser suits in the main.

what ever society you are in is not the one I am in.

@PhaedraWas How can you disagree with a FACT. It's not a 'stance' (ie an opinion) it's a fact!

If the model is 9 inches taller than some women (me) how will a dress trailing on the ground, tripping shorter women up, look good?

Most models now are close to 6ft.
Anyone shorter would have to pay (maybe £50) to have dresses altered.

One thing I look for with dresses are brands that offer petite sizes or, if the clothes can be altered at home.

That's not a 'stance'. It's called 'being practical'.

Nanda66 · 04/03/2026 21:34

I’ve been loving this thread and it’s made me realise I should buy fewer things but better quality clothes that I love. I’ve ordered a blouse recommended on here - in the sale. And a blouse and a pair of trousers on Vinted. It’s a start and will help me get an idea of sizing. Thanks everyone.

It's not a fact. My experience of being 5'3" is that it is vanishingly rare that I ever have to get things altered. I don't buy petite. I buy standard sizes. At most dresses and coats will be slightly longer than me than on the model. I don't know if this is because the information isn't accurate or the models are wearing model versions to show what the item looks like in real life on the average woman.

Here's 2 examples of dresses I own

https://caseycasey.eu/products/Stephanie-dress-white
Model is 5'8"
This dress is pretty much the same on me.

https://klements.co.uk/products/dusk-dress-in-doomed-voyage-print-sorbet-port?variant=42760402141342
Model here is 5'10". This dress is ankle length on me but doesn't drag on the pavement.

I could give you loads of other examples. Most women are under 5'8" - what is the point of making clothes which won't fit most women?

STEPHANIE DRESS - PAPER - WHITE

STYLE: SPREAD COLLAR. BUTTON CLOSURE. COROZO BUTTONS. FABRIC: COTTON FABRIC. MADE WITH SINGLE-FOLD THREADS WITH EGYPTIAN COTTON. A FABRIC WHOSE BEAUTY INCREASES AT EACH WASH. EXCLUSIVE CASEY CASEY FABRIC.

hope you love them. It’s an expensive addiction to develop though 😄. I find sizing generous as said up thread.

I have no need for the types of clothes on me+em. I work from home and my social life is very casual. It's the kind of place I'd look for an occasion dress- a special wedding or some more formal dinner.

I guess I'm struggling to imagine where most women would wear their dresses - not work, unless high flying Execs in the City maybe, or very much in the public eye. (I know the PM's wife is a fan of theirs.)

The dresses are extremely long and anything I bought would need altering.

I could afford £250 for a dress but it would have to be for something special or I'd need to get a lot of wear out of it.
My lifestyle isn't in that category.

Interested in those who do buy it and how / where you wear it?

Edited

That's what ultimately led me to closing the browser window without buying anything.

From the other poster's descriptions, this brand sounds like it was made for my body type and a lot of it is in keeping with my style.

The prices are extortionate when converted to AUD (plus they charge shipping) and while I would have happily stretched for the right pieces, I realised I just won't get enough wear out of them as I'm in active or casual wear most of the time. Plus I already have something similar to a lot of the clothes that jumped out at me (and they're not getting much wear either!).

I might end up in one of those silk dresses when my kids get married though!

Bowies · 05/03/2026 03:21

Meh, I got some shorts from there a few years ago they were expensive yet mediocre and haven’t bothered with the company since.

Nothing especially appealing on the images.

I'm 5'10, big boned, size 12-14 and I wouldn't buy anything from there as I know they wouldn't suit me at all, it's not just being tall that suits the clothes. Stuff like that generally suits tall and fine boned elegant women, the only thing good for me would be the length. That picture of AR upthread striding out is what I would look like in that trouser suit but without the nice hair

I agree with you on this, it’s important to find clothes that fit your body shape and style, not every brand will work for every woman. As much as I don’t want to criticise any woman’s appearance, Angela raynor did not look good in that green suit, it did nothing for her at all, and in fact the suit itself looked awful, if I hadn’t known the brand it would have put me right off it. I’m fairly sure the marketing folks at me + em, also raised an eyebrow too. It was just the wrong choice for her body shape, however Angela does often struggle with clothes and hitting the right note.

for me their clothes fit my body proportions, as in they fit perfectly, waist, leg length, arm length, chest etc, it’s like they were made for my body shape and proportions. They also suit how I like to dress, which is unfortunate really given the price point, (😀) and some other brands wouldn’t work for me.

For example The lady up thread who is shorter, posted the off white dress and the pinky purple one, these aren’t clothes I would wear. I’m sure she looks lovely in them, but it wouldn’t work for me at all.

and that’s ok, we don’t all have to like the same thing, or dress the same, no one s forced to buy from any given brand, we all have different ways we like to dress and different body shapes. No one has to be defensive about not liking them.

clearly , misogynistic or sexist comments about women being promoted as they look like they are nice and no trouble to men are unacceptable, and quite frankly bonkers given the context of this thread, but past that, there are so many brands and retailers, for everyone’s sense of style and body shape, no one has to be defensive about not buying from them.

LadyLovesShallots · 05/03/2026 07:35

I agree! There is a gorgeous silk dress for over £500 and others for less that I consider occasion wear.
