Tummytroublesagain1 · 01/03/2026 15:35

Currently swooning over most things in ME+EM. Why oh why does it have to be so nice but soooo expensive

ive been to the store in Manchester and do have a couple of items but I could literally buy so much more if only I could afford it

does anyone have any cheaper alternative that are just a gorgeous?

@BIossomtoes I agree to some extent about Toast at the moment. I sent some trousers and a jacket back in the last summer sale which would have been unheard of a few years ago. But I did get a great skirt for half price in the recent sale so I'm hanging on, plus I keep an eye on their Reworn site where the prices are more sensible than they are on Vinted plus you can return things.

Notsosweetcaroline · 03/03/2026 10:07

I used to be a reiss addict, and they are my second fave still. But I find the quality and cut of me + em far superior to Reiss.

their typical tailoring, which doesn’t show well on the model for the jeans I’m wearing today is slim through the hips and upper legs, moving gently to a wider bottom and its ultra flattering, and they do it across multiple pieces ie the track pants, some trousers etc, it’s prob my favourite cut of trousers.

i just hope as they grow they don’t cut corners on who they are and what they do. As that would be a real shame.

Interesting because I used to be a great fan of Toast but they’ve lost me now. Absurd prices for very ordinary clothes on the whole. I fell in love with a dress last year which went straight back - £195, made in China and didn’t fit anywhere because the proportions were awful. I think it’s completely lost its way.

This.
Everything looks so baggy and shapeless.

that dreadful green trouser thing she wore it was not a photogenic outfit.

FairKoala · 03/03/2026 10:28

Only looked at the first page of recommendations and I look at it and know before I venture into a store that these clothes will make me look like a child trying on adult clothes. I have all bar given up on buying women’s clothing because
Firstly, nearly all of it is made for some one several inches taller than me.
Secondly I don’t like long sleeves and crew necks

when I have looked at the shorter ranges some places do. It is all short skirts and dresses in smaller sizes.
Never seen anything that is designed to be midlength and would suit someone with bigger boobs

It doesn't call to me like certain items of Margaret Howell or Toast do, plus their trousers are far too long for me, but I can still see why it appeals. I think they're very good at interpreting trends to make them wearable and also at reinventing classics to make them look modern.

I still have fond memories of their ruched jersey skirts and dresses that were just within budget if I hung on for a discount.

I agree Angela Rayner looked a bugger in that trouser suit but I think the red dress that Victoria Starmer wore would have been right up her (AR's) street - my theory is that Angela had had her eye on it but Mrs S got there first.

Margaret Howell is amazing. All of their clothes are meticulously made. Portugal for cottons/shirting etc. Beautiful Scottish knitwear.

Very expensive but worth it. Incomparable to the Chinese mass produced stuff from toast
I only buy MH in the sale or at their sale shop.

Floisme · 03/03/2026 10:39

I feel a bit guilty now for starting a derail to Toast so I'm going to leave it there.
I was really just trying to make the point that sometimes I can like a brand but still not feel quite like 'me' in it, and I put Me and Em in that category.

However I might take a look at their (Me and Em) wide leg jeans. The price will kill me but I'm not getting on with cheaper brands - the denim is too flimsy for my liking.
Editing as I've just remembered they'd probably be way too long, dammit

Most stuff now is baggy and shapeless

I went out last year for a days shopping g because I was running out of clothes to wear and came back with a plain black T shirt that had a low scooped neck line and sleeves the finished just above my elbows which held in my bat wings

The rest of the stuff looked like it was designed for someone adhering to their religious beliefs that women should cover up

Notice that Me+Em seem to be constricted by following the short sleeves long bottom half / long sleeves short bottom half rule of design

@Notsosweetcaroline I’m going to buy those jeans you linked-they are lovely and look so flattering.

SirEddaVey · 03/03/2026 10:52

Most stuff now is baggy and shapeless I agree. The styles don't work for me.

I saw someone yesterday wearing a baggy and shapeless coat and some balloon jeans. She looked great, but she was tiny, not of white British heritage, and young.

Honestly I’d thoroughly recommend, v soft and comfy too, but v flattering.

If it helps this is them on, this is the regular length , they come in three lengths, I’ve tried to stand so you can see leg shape,

BIossomtoes · 03/03/2026 12:21

I’m a bit of an anomaly on S&B because I actually like baggy and shapeless and did long before it became ubiquitous! It has to fit somewhere though. I love a trapeze shape that fits perfectly on the shoulders, I’m also a sucker for balloon or barrel leg trousers, despite being 5’ 2” and 72. I pay very little attention now to “flattering” or convention - if I like it and I can get into it I wear it.

They look great on you.

I'm wondering which length to try. May I ask what height you are?

I’m 5 foot 6 and a half, but as you can see I’ve weirdly long legs for my height and an oddly short body, the inside leg is on the size guide, short is 30 inches, regular is 32 and long is 34 inches.im wearing the regular.

and thanks ☺️

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · 03/03/2026 12:35

Nah …

If ever you see a livid queue of S&B posters baying to tear apart a tent / sack / Amish / is this a joke? garment, you may be sure I’ve recently tried to be helpful by making a suggestion. 😂

Mumofteentwins · 03/03/2026 12:38

I’m a huge fan. I don’t like everything - some of the stuff you just can’t imagine where you would wear it. But it’s slowly taking over my wardrobe. I only buy in the sale but that’s about 4-5 pieces a year. Agree quality and fit are amazing.

I have knitwear, dresses, t shirts and blouses from there. I wore one of their dresses to a black tie event over the weekend and I’m wearing a collared thin knit today for WFH calls. On Sunday I wore one of their long sleeved casual tops for a family brunch. Love it! It fits so well and I always feel well dressed in it.

it’s absolutely nothing like Jigsaw, Boden (yuck), whistles. I own nothing from those brands. M&S has upped its game a lot over recent years and I’m a fan of that as well.

I'd join you but we're gonna need a bigger bench if we're all in our finery.

PickleASturgeon · 03/03/2026 13:04

I've seen some of their knitwear lately on Vinted. New with tags, but for suspiciously cheap prices, also always an odd amount eg £38.65. Would you say that they are likely to be fakes?

That looks like old stock and far from current, hence the low price, it’s also quite a niche taste, which again will dictate price.

fakes or stolen I'd say - I saw one item the other day and the ME+EM label was barely hanging on, just didn't look genuine at all

@Notsosweetcaroline they look great on you! I’ve just ordered two pairs to check for size. I don’t think I’ll look as good in them though. I’ve also ordered some cheesecloth co-ords for my summer holiday and a silk-cotton blouse.

ScoutOfTheSoftHeartsClub · 03/03/2026 13:22

Actually, now I think if it, the possibility of inadvertently buying stolen stock is one of the things that puts me off Vinted and similar sources.

That’s very kind and I suspect you will look better! Let us know how you find them. ☺️
