Showing my age @Maireas 😆
Was a common word round my way many years ago! Ooh, bit frumpy that blouse!
Same as 'county' (in hushed tones) was a good thing!😆

My American friend was in Rome in an exquisite tea dress in front of the trevi fountain. I said what a beautiful frock. She took offence at the word frock 🤷‍♀️. Which I've sometimes used.

RomainingCalm · 14/04/2026 11:46

I don't dislike the navy dress, even with the gold buttons. When Meghan was in the UK I always thought she looked great in more classic, well-cut styles rather than the drapey dresses or different shades of sludge.

(And yes, I too like the word 'frock' - it's due a comeback!)

Sidebeforeself · 14/04/2026 12:06

’Frock” is definitely a good word. But - please- never let “slacks” come back into fashion!

Cassiope · 14/04/2026 12:16

@Sidebeforeself If you were forced to choose between 'slacks' and 'pants' which would you plump for?

Oh god thats a hard one. I suppose , because Im UK based, I can just about cope with the word pants because that means underwear to me not trousers.

But only if you put a gun to my head.

eggandonion · 14/04/2026 12:35

Where I live it is acceptable to say a pants with plural pantses for trousers. And slacks pronounced slecks for gents semi formal clothing.
I say trousers but my kids say pants.

Cassiope · 14/04/2026 12:38

'Pant suit' though, somehow that's worse than 'pants'.

Cassiope · 14/04/2026 12:43

Whilst I'm being frivolous, would you have guessed that under her voluminous woollen trousers from the other day Maxima was wearing these boots?

Pant suit is very Hilary Clinton.

RomainingCalm · 14/04/2026 13:05

Those are amazing boots that Max was wearing although I think I'd only be a short walk away from A&E in them.

I can't cope with 'pant suit' at all. It just conjures up images of half-dressed people working from home and pretending to be dressed on a Teams call.

In my life slacks and pants/trousers are different things. I thought slacks were those trousers that were popular in the 1960s with the stirrup that goes under the foot.

Eaumyword · 14/04/2026 13:09

I do imagine actual knickers like superheroes when someone says pant suits 😆
And my gorgeous funny grandma used to wear 'slacks' even when they were smart! 🤷

Maireas · 14/04/2026 13:20

I remember watching a documentary about Princess Grace of Monaco, and one of her designers said "Princess Grace didn't like wearing pants"
I thought, that's racy!

Growing up in the 50s, we weren't allowed to wear trousers except for when we went to the country when we were allowed to wear 'slacks' with wellies.

They are ski pants.
To me , slacks are beige polyester trousers with a permanent pleat . Men used to wear them when modelling cardigans in knitting patterns !

Ha! That’s brilliant!

Lunde · 14/04/2026 13:39

The navy dress looks good on Meghan with its simple/unfussy styling

The brown/swamp coloured ensemble is awful everything looks too long, too baggy and it looks awful from the back - the jacket and the giant skirt split are very unflattering

No, ski pants were close fitting. I remember slacks as being wide legged crimplene flappy things with the strap under them, my mum had navy blue ones

I dont understand how the strap worked if they were wide legged and flappy?

Apologies for derailing the thread, but this is an important issue which simply must be cleared up.

gingercat02 · 14/04/2026 13:46

I think a lot of Meg's issues are down to her posture, she rarely stands up straight, she's often clinging to someone, hugging someone or bent over. Doesn't help clothing to fall well.
She's also long bodied (as am i), fit is difficult. I was looking for a jacket yesterday, everything too short or waisted halfway up my ribs.
There is a lot of that chartruse green in my northern city centre shops.

Hard to explain but the wide parts were sort of front and back - they were truly awful even then

True, she is so often holding Harry's arm, or head tilted to the side that it's hard to see her clothes properly.

eggandonion · 14/04/2026 14:31

She needs posture lessons. Let go of Harry and walk round with a book on her head.
She has a yoga studio? That would be a good place to start.

I love using “frock”, especially for posh dresses 😆
