Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Anything with an obvious logo is tacky, imho. Also, the bigger the brand name/logo, the tackier it gets.

I don't think all the clearly counterfeit designer knock-offs are any less tacky than the obvious 'real' designer products, either - when you're sporting a brand name emblazoned all over you like a billboard, you just look tacky.

I think logo-less luxurious fabrics like cashmere, silk, linen and good quality wool clothes and a well-made leather or suede bag and shoes just look so much nicer than something screaming the brand name.

Anything Kardashian. Saw a nice bag a while back then saw the K branding. Nope!

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

Ever walked a dog is the peeing rain, on a field on which the rain has been falling for days.. in winter.
Dry Robes may have been designed with swimmers in mind but that doesn't mean they aren't brilliant for any number of outdoor activities.
I wear a dry robe to walk my dogs, to stand pitchside at the rugby in winter, to wrap around my legs watching cricket in summer.

Can I ask which brands you would recommend please? Love a good winter hike and need some new kit x

I wear Montane and Rab - both good outdoor brands which last years (and are British so put money into our economy). Rucksacks are usually Lowe Alpine (ten years and still going strong) and my boots are either Salomon or Hanwag or La Sportiva. Trail running shoes are La Sportiva. Socks are Bridgedales. Also check out Mammut and Alpkit - the latter is currently in administration but should be done according to reports.

BTW Rab have two outlets which are brilliant - one in Somercotesbin Derbyshire and one in Northwich. No website but find them on Facebook (called Mountain Outfitters there). Hope that all helps!

That is what DH calls him!

Don't want to derail the thread, but the Michelin Man does actually have a name: Bibendum (often shortened to Bib).

Flinderskleepers · 12/02/2026 14:03

Range Rover.
Tacky as.

No! The whole point of a Dry Robe is that it is designed to put on when you are WET so that you can get changed under it! That is why they are huge and lined in the way that they are. They are not just massive baggy warm coats that you wear on top of dry clothing. The Dry is as in “get dried” not” keeps you dry”.

Why not just wear a normal large warm waterproof coat if you are not getting your underneath clothes wet by doing an activity?

Edited

Why not just wear a normal large warm waterproof coat if you are not getting your underneath clothes wet by doing an activity?

Why not just wear what you want, when you want? If the dry robes fit the bill then why should they not be worn just because they were initially designed for something more specific?

ChequerToRed · 12/02/2026 14:06

Tbh, any brand can be tacky in the right/wrong circumstances, whether cheap or expensive. I don’t like ones that pretend to be more than they are, such as Superdry and Ted Baker (Superdry because they pretend to be Japanese, Ted Baker because its a high st shop with pretensions) and I really dislike high end brands that take a dump on their heritage to sell boring products (VC&A’s ubiquitous Alhambra range, Tiffany’s deathly dull and overpriced silver range, Hermes bloody Kellys and Birkins and their artificial scarcity).

Bloozie · 12/02/2026 14:07

Guess. Michael Kors.

I see Pandora as a tween / teen brand. I don’t see it as tacky just for a younger audience

I actually think it’s quite sweet, as the shopper feels special going in and choosing their item and trinkets. It’s good quality customer service for a low price point.

I agree. I think that's probably their target audience.

Calliopespa · 12/02/2026 14:08

Gym gear worn in a faux "I was just on my way to the gym" way.

Especially with a full face of make-up.

Fodencat · 12/02/2026 14:08

I’d never buy anything from New Look however much I thought it looked ok online. TU clothing from Sains. Too cheap/looking and the footwear is plastic

Calliopespa · 12/02/2026 14:09

Moncler

Hicupping · 12/02/2026 14:11

FCUK, Nars, anyone that uses overt sexual terms for their items. Orgasm blush, climax mascara, what are you a 14 year old boy.

PeachBlossom1234 · 12/02/2026 14:11

Fairfax and Favour and Holland Cooper. So tacky and gross

PrettyPickle · 12/02/2026 14:12

Bench (sorry Bench) and Burberry

Exactly - I didn't even realise dry robes were invited for cold water swimming until I discovered on MN (I don't own one btw I just find the specificness of people's ire towards them weird).

Gahr · 12/02/2026 14:15

Skims. Just a bad rip off of Spanx (doesn't work half as well) and Kim Kardashian is tacky, tacky, tacky. I don't care who she is dating or pretending to date, or how much money she has.

Dragonflytamer · 12/02/2026 13:41

Yeap people who go canoeing or any other watersports. I have never had the need to get changed under a tool on the school playground. As I say you don't have to think its tacky. I do.

Honestly I find the judgements about other people’s choices pretty rude and the idea anyone would buy another warm/waterproof coat as well as the perfectly good one they already have for sea swimming/other open water sports frankly bizzare. I’d much rather be seen as a “dry robe wanker” than an unpleasant, judgmental person but as you say we all have our own opinions. If anyone started making comments about others clothing choices being “tacky” in real life I’m sure I’d just quietly classify them as people to avoid.

worcesterpear · 12/02/2026 14:18

I was going to say exactly the same as a pp, Juicy Couture and White Fox. I just think those White Fox hoodies look so try hard and amateur. Also never heard of Adanola.

Dragonflytamer · 12/02/2026 14:19

Why are you taking part in a thread about which clothes people find tacky?

Mamma22cats · 12/02/2026 14:20

KimHwn · 12/02/2026 12:31

I know this is going to sound snippy but I do really mean it- I think judging people for what they wear is tacky. I think everyone has preferences, but to sit in a circle and discuss what is tacky- I just don't think it's a classy thing to do. I think you have to examine what it is you mean by tacky, and whether it's something to do with social class, income, or something else. Good-hearted people just don't look at someone's clothes and make judgements about them. It just isn't done.

This.

Obviously that was aimed at the very judgemental @Americasfavouritefightingfrenchman criticising others views on clothing./

Dry Robes are designed to give someone enough space to get changed underneath, so it's really odd to be wearing one around everywhere if you're not getting changed.

This.

We're all commenting on Mumnet threads - that is hardly the last bastion of class. I would never discuss stuff like that at a dinner party.
